Symbolism In The Lost Thing By Shaun Tan
Within Shaun Tan s picture books The Red Tree and The Lost Thing , surrealism is
utilised to deliver the themes of hope and rejection. Visual techniques and extended
metaphors aid in the transmission of these themes. Symbolism, colour, positioning,
drawing styles, and cultural referencing are techniques used to convey the messages.
Tan utilises these techniques to help the reader realise, and interpret, for themselves
the overarching messages within in the picture books.
Throughout Shaun Tans surrealist picture books The Lost Thingand The Red Tree
the overarching theme of hope is explored. Both books implement symbolism and
positioning to reveal the extended metaphor of hope. In The Red Tree Tan uses the
symbol of a red leaf on every page to represent hope, similarly, The Lost Thing has
the symbol of a white, curvy arrow on almost every page to also symbolise hope.
Tan uses the red leaf as a metaphor to the reader that hope is always present, even if
sometimes the person cannot see it at that moment. This is represented in the nobody
understands picture where the little girl is seen in a glass bottle with a diving helmet
on, the red leaf is positioned behind her and she cannot see it; Tan also makes the
leaf a darker tone so it blends in with the background, further emphasising the notion
of hope not always being noticeable. Correspondingly, in The Lost Thing the symbol
of the white arrow is found on almost every page, however, the protagonists do not

Analyzing Dorothea Lange s Migrant Mother
Dorothea Lange s Migrant Mother is a photograph that documents a moment of
distress within American history. The image works as a visual representation of
suffering for those who were lucky enough not to live within the Dust Bowl region.
To many it is uncertain if Lange s image became an American Icon because of the
struggle it presented or because of the eye capturing composition of it. However, with
this image came forth the issue of a photos validity after photo manipulation, as
Lange edited the image by removing the thumb of the mother who was a large
subject. Despite the slight manipulation in Migrant Mother, the photographstill
presents the situation truthfully, making the photograph function as both a work of

The mother in the photograph catches the viewer s eye at first glance, straight in
center view with Lange s lens. Due to the subject focus, the mother and her
children, it is safe to declare that the mother knew the photograph was being taken
although her eyes linger away from where Lange would be standing. With her
children hiding behind her, looking down, the viewer is forced to look at their
filthy hair and disheveled appearances. By not giving Lange or her lens their direct
attention it forces those viewing the image to look at the subjects themselves and
not make eye contact with them. By doing so it is easier to notice the stressed lines
on the mothers face, the torn and grimy apparel hanging off of each person and the
