Cross Sectional Study Sample
This is a cross sectional study. The sample size was estimated using Epiinfo statistical software. The
population of interest was estimated to be approximately 400 subjects with BMI 30 Kg/m2 from a total
population of approximately 1,000 receiving health care at Policlínica Bella Vista (PBV) in Mayaguez PR.
Estimating a prevalence rate of 0.3 (30%) of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in this population, the
program yielded a sample size = 179 to estimate the prevalence with a 95% confidence level. at 180.
After approval by the IRB of the Ponce Health Sciences University, the study was conducted at the PBV.
Inclusion criteria: subjects of any sex, at least 21 years old and with body mass index (BMI) of at least
30Kg/m2 who visit Policlínica Bella Vista during the study period (09/01/19 to 01/31/17). Exclusion criteria
were subjects already diagnosed with OSA, or with overt symptoms of OSA or with upper respiratory
infections to reduce the chance of contamination of the equipment and/or alteration of the test results.
Participants were recruited according to availability, asked to complete the Stop Bang questionnaire and
explained about the overnight use of a HSAT equipment (RESMED Apnea Link Air Home Sleep Test) and
