A Brief Note On Preventative Medicine And Education
Preventative Medicine and Education Poor health and homelessness has been connected through
multiple studies. Having poor health can cause homelessness. On the flip side, being homeless can
also cause poor health. Being homeless brings a list of complications including limited access to
getting proper health care. This causes the health of the homeless population in the United States to be
worse than that of the general population. Common health problems in the homeless population
include: mental health problems, substance abuse problems, bronchitis and pneumonia, problems
caused by being outdoors, wound and skin infections, along with the complications that follow each of
the listed problems (Medicine Plus, 2016). Along with the list of problems previously stated, many
homeless women are victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Children often have high rates of emotional
and behavioral problems, many times caused from having witnessed abuse. Studies have shown 31
46% report having a chronic medical problem. (NHCHC, 2001, p.1). According to these statistics
almost half of the homeless population are suffering from chronic health problems. The majority of
which will not receive proper care to cure the health problems. The homeless population, in order to
address the living challenges, they use extraordinary amounts of human services. Visits to a facility
that provides health care is much higher for a homeless person than the general population. Homeless

Aristotle s Views Of Poetry Essay
Socratic moral philosophy is important in poetry because it engages poets in rational thinking when
making poems. Poetry is mostly communicated through written texts; it can be used to expand one s
knowledge of himself or herself and the world. However, philosophers disparage poetry by its
composition and senses such as imitation, representation, fiction, and expression. On this note,
Socrates used philosophical explorations to criticize the role of poetry in the world. Many poets
engage in imitation and imagination in their poetic works, which limits the chances of poetry
enhancing knowledge in the society. The branch points between poets and Socrates are imitation
versus and imagination versus reason.
Socrates was an influential Greek philosopher; however, he never wrote any book and his ideologies
are mostly presented by Plato, who was his student. Plato explains Socrates attitude towards poetry in
his books, the Republic and the Symposium. Afterward, he offers his perceptions and solutions to the
matter. Plato s Republic explains Socrates mindset towards poetry censorship. Socrates argued that
poetry lacked wisdom because there was no censorship of works of poetry. As a result, poets can write
about anything they wish to inscribe, which enhances imitation. On this note, Socrates argued that
poetry exposed citizens to different forms of imitation, which would corrupt their minds because they
had no restrictions.
On the other hand, Plato offers a solution towards the

Comparing The American Zoo And Aquariums
One of the many things people go to for fun while growing up is going to a zoo or an aquarium.
Whether it s with their family during the summer, or during the school year in elementary with the
entire class. It s a way to have a good time with friends and family and also a way to learn more about
certain species and their averments. In North American 140 Million people visit zoos annually: that s
more than baseball, basketball, football, and hockey combined. At a global scale that 700 million
people! However, there are still many people that believe that zoos and aquariums are plain and
simply unethical. This is not true because many zoos across the country have been known to
contribute in the saving of endangered species, and also helped other ... Show more content on

People will say that they don t treat them right in zoos, and that they don t have enough rooms to roam
around, but zookeepers and scientists give all the animals specific training, exercise and food to meet
their nutritional requirements. Zoos may actually more beneficial for some of the animals because
they don t have competition. Greco say in his article, In the wild, food resources are temporally and
spatially dispersed this means that it may be hard to find food hasn t already been eating or that isn t
too far away. Next, exercise plans have been implanted especially for elephants to reduce pod
dermatitis, a bone disease they are generally prone to and also elephants tend to be obese. To prevent
this they teach elephants to stretch and staff directed walking. (Greco 3) Moreover, staff are required
to give good hygiene to most animals in the zo to prevent any diseases and funguses. This shows the
amazing care zoos give the animals to give them a healthy lifestyle. In conclusion, zoos and
aquariums are important in many ways. One being fo the education of students, two being the help
they give animals that are endangered, and three is the fact they give good care the animals so they
will be in a good healthy condition. Although zoos haven t always been as great as they now, they
have change in positive way. So, perhaps people should also

Examining The Place Of The Russian Minority
Examining the Place of the Russian Minority in Latvia: Aliens, non citizens or stateless persons?
Introduction
The region of Latvia has a long history of occupation by foreign powers and so its ethnicity is quite
varied. The Latvian Republic is one of the Baltic States located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Along
with its neighbours Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia gained independence from the Soviet Union in
1991. It is when Latvia gained its status as an independent state that the most crucial period for the
Russian speaking residents began, as at that time the country s main issue was the status of its 1.1
million Russian speaking residents. Under Latvia s 2000 census (Heleniak, 2006), 30 per cent of the
country s 2.4 million population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The year independence was restored was defining for many thousands of Russians permanently living
in Latvia. On 3rd March 1991 a nonbinding advisory referendum took place with the result that 73%
of all Latvian residents supported the notion for independent Latvia (Troitsky, 2011). The Popular
Front of Latvia, the national movement which was promoting the idea of segregation, advocated that
all permanent residents will be entitled to and qualified for Latvian citizenship (Melvin, 1995, p. 34).
All those who want to be citizens of Latvia can be (Lieven, 1997, p. 304) stated Anatolijs Gorbunovs,
Chairman of the Latvian Supreme Council. However, the universal citizenship for all permanent
residents was not adopted. Latvia restored the rights and status only for those persons who were
identified as citizens under the 1919 Law together with their descendants (Aleinikoff Klusmeyer,
2001, p. 31). Thereby, for the majority of ethnic non Latvians citizenship was not granted, even when
the biggest portion of them were born in Latvia. This was seen as an attempt to suppress national
extinction (Mole, 2012, p. 89 90) caused by, according to the radicals in Latvia, the Russian people.
Those people became non citizens not holding citizenship to any other country and without the right to
vote. In Latvia as well as in Estonia the Russian population is seen as a reminder of their unhappy past
(Best, 2013, p. 34), thus the Russian people are not welcomed

Problems With A Hard Disk Drive Space Essay
If you have been online for any length of time you have run into a few basic computer problems. If
you are like me you do a search on your favorite search engine for the solution to the problem. This
article gives you some simple fixes to common problems computer users run into online. Problem #1
One problem I run into often is that my computer will occasionally start to run really slow. There are
many reasons this may occur including a hard disk drive which is running short on available disk
space, bad files left from software programs that have been installed or uninstalled, corrupt data,
missing Windows updates or outdated drivers, a computer that is overheating because of a problem
with the fan, corrupt OS, or simply bad Hardware. The solution to a slow running computer is based
on which of the above reasons can be attributed to the problem. To free up hard disk drive space you
can take a few steps to free up space. You should have between 200 and 500MB of free hard disk
drive space on your computer to accommodate swap files and temporary files. To free up space run
Disk Cleanup , uninstall old programs or games that you no longer use. If you are running Windows
XP or Vista you can disable System Restore, disable hibernation or delete temporary files. Running
Scandisk can insure that there is nothing physically wrong with the hard disk drive and running
Defrag will make sure that the data is arranged in the best possible order. You may also want to update

Analysis of the Free-Throw Shot
Analysis of the Free Throw Shot
When deciding about a movement to study, I thought about many, and very few interested me. Then I
decided to choose something that was very important to me.
Shooting the basketball, and more specifically the technique in performing a free throw. I thought by
looking more closely at the details of a movement I have been doing since a small child. I thought
possibly I could learn something that would give me an advantage in my shot. The application of this
particular movement is for shooting a free throw, which is a stand still uncontested shot. There are a
few rules that go with shooting a free throw, such as you have to be behind the fifteen foot line, called

This is where you want to focus on the rim and extend at the elbow, and extending at the wrist. Now to
talk about what all this really means and how you get the ball from your hand to the rim. When we do
it, we consider it to be very simple, but it is actually a very complex movement, involving many
different muscles. Many muscles are involved, some more than others. I will first talk about the ones
used the least. The shoulder girdle involves muscles that are key to the movement, but are mostly used
in stabilization of the shoulder. The Trapezius and the Rhomboid muscles are stabilizers of the
shoulder along with the rotator cuff muscles including the Supraspinatis, Infraspinatis, Teres Minor,
and Subscapularis which provide dynamic stability of the shoulder. All these muscles are key, but are
not involved much in the actual movement. The Serratus Anterior is commonly used in movements
drawing the scapula forward with slight upward rotation, and would be used in shooting the basketball
and works in conjunction with Pectoralis Minor. Now we will get into some of the muscles actually
doing the work when shooting the free throw. The Deltoid, which is one of the most important
muscles involved in any shoulder movement is responsible for the movement of the Humerus. Any
movement of the Humerus will involve the Deltoid. The Coracobrachialis assist in flexion of the
shoulder. Other muscles involved in the cocking phase of

Human Resource Management? Does the concept of Human Resource Management present a radical
novelty or is it a mere repackaging of personnel management?
Introduction
During the 1980 s, a new management concept referred to as Human Resource Management (HRM)
became very fashionable. At that time, many academics questioned whether HMR was simply a
renaming of the previously known personnel management (PM) tool, or whether it was, as some
claimed, a radically different philosophy and approach to management of people at work (1). Firstly, it
seems appropriate to define HRM. However, the definition of HRM this has been widely debated, and

Toward the end of the 1980 s as more and more academics continued to produce a wealth of literature
on the subject of HRM, it became clear that there was a recurring theme for those companies that
appeared to perform extremely well in these market conditions. It became obvious in these
increasingly dynamic markets that companies that were proactive to market change were able to do so
as a result of motivated workforce. The question that was begging to be asked was how they were able
to this so well ? The answer was through involved management styles that were instilling a culture in
the workforce that was proactive rather than reactive. This is one of the key differences that will be
referred back to later. It was suggested that these had been brought on by the intense competition and
pressure, which meant a competent PM was more necessary than ever.
There were several other socioeconomic changes that all acted as antecedents to the development and
reshaping of PM that became known as HRM. These included increasingly strident demands of
shareholders, changing work force (flexibility, part time largely through the employment of women), a
changing age structure of the workforce, the young moving in the direction of private and service
sectors, hence less prone to unionisation and finally increasingly mechanised manufacturing processes
through new technologies.
Differences between HRM and PM
The second part of this essay looks at whether HRM was in actual fact

Poverty In Canada
In 1914, Canadas poverty rate was at a high of approximately twenty percent. At this time in Canada,
it did not matter what age you were, either six months or ninety nine years old the likeliness of being
poor were very high. Poverty does not only destroy a person s life, it is crippling to a country its self.
Canada was hit hard with poverty, especially during and after the Great Depression and our
government knew there was a need for help. Over the past century, the government of Canada has
created many different types of social programs.1 These programs implemented Canada have been a

assist with covering the cost of things like food, housing, child and medical care, and cash allowance.6
The main goal of this program is to insure that people can go through their life with the necessary
needs and proper living obligations. This was created in 1938 right after world war two and has
brought our poverty rate down forty percent from the rate it was in the 1930s.7 Over sixty percent of
our population is on some sort of government welfare or most likely will be on one at one point in
their life. Each different type of welfare program has different rules, eligibility, benefit and provisions
regarding special assistance. Throughout the duration of the past seventy years, our government has
made it easier to receive this social program, so that Canada can fight off poverty. Without welfare
many people would not be able to afford the everyday needs of life and our poverty rate would most
likely be increased immensely.8 On that note, this is why welfare is one of the main protection from
poverty in

Causes of the Financial Crisis of 2008-2009
Causes of The Financial Crisis of 2007 2009
According to our financial textbook Financial crises are major disruptions in financial markets
characterized by sharp declines in asset prices and firm failures (Mishkin and Eakins 2012). In August
2007, defaults in mortgage market for subprime borrowers sent a shudder through the financial
markets, leading to the worst U.S financial crisis since the Great Depression. Alan Greenspan,
chairman of the Fed, described the financial crisis as a once in a century credit tsunami . (Mishkin and
Eakins 2012). Furthermore, Wall Street firms and commercial banks suffered losses mounting to
billions of dollars. Households and businesses found they had to pay higher interest rates on their ...

Moreover, many participants contributed to the creation of bad mortgages and the selling of bad
securities, feeling secure they would not be held accountable for their actions. The unregulated
mortgage originators had no personal responsibility if those contracts failed. And so it was for brokers,
realtors, individuals in rating agencies, and other market participants, each maximizing his or her own
gain and passing problems on down the line until the system itself collapsed.(Jinkling 2010). In the
end, these unregulated originators were concerned on their commission fee, for personal gains, not if
any of the loans were going to default.
The Originate to Distribute model plays an essential role, on the unregulated mortgage originators
perspective and agenda. Many mortgage brokers and lenders operated under the originate to distribute
model whereby they originated loans solely for the purpose of selling them. This model allowed them
to earn loan origination fees without incurring any type of credit risk. Many times this model, allowed
the unregulated originators to take additional fees for collecting loan payments, escrowing and making
payments for property taxes and insurance premiums. Additionally, unregulated mortgage originators
can charge a fee just by receiving customer inquiries. (Bank Law Committee 2009). According to
Mishkin and Eakins, the originate to distribute business modal was exposed to principal agent
problems, in

Rose For Emily Respect
Respecting the elderly is a lesson that most people are taught early on, and there is good reason for it,
but respecting and enabling are not synonymous, especially when heinous crimes are committed. This
is exactly what happens in William Faulkner s Southern gothic short story A Rose For Emily or, at
least, that is the tale told on the surface. Underneath the story of an old disturbed woman s death is the
author s commentary on the nature of Southern pride and tendency to hold on to the past. Much like
the in the current day, the respect that old Southern ways demands from the region s inhabitants has
not changed and will likely remain a constant fixture for generations to come. Faulkner gets his
overarching theme of respect for the past across by using the characters of Miss Emily and the town as
a whole as symbols for the past that is respected and the living people that must continue. The
subgenre of Southern Gothic literature is one that explores all kinds of hard and gritty themes that can
often leave the reader chilled; one such theme that are explored in this particular piece of Southern ...

The Unknown Citizen By Auden
The Unknown Citizen, written by W. H. Auden, is a poem that describes a man who lived a life most
people would see as ideal. The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him to do,
which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way. Some may see
the story in the poem as a description of a man who had an unfulfilling life because he did exactly
what was expected of him. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or making a change,
the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Auden s poem can be seen from two
perspectives: the man who lived an ideal life that many people sought to have or the man who lived an
unfulfilling, ordinary life which caused him to blend in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
W. H. Auden s poem, The Unknown Citizen, is a great example of this because one can find at least
two meanings within the poem. One person could see the poem as a description of a perfect man while
someone else could see the poem as a message to be unique and make a change in the world. The man
in the poem fulfilled society s expectations, but at the same time, the man may not have had a
fulfilling life. These two ideas could not be the only interpretations of the poem. Other readers may

Ovid s Metamorphoses Character Analysis
The transformations in Ovid s Metamorphoses serve several purposes. The most common meaning of
the transformations is to punish or to protect. Ovid distinguishes among purposes through his word
choice. In the myths of Metamorphoses, Ovid s uses the descriptions of transformations in Daphne,
Arachne, and Tereus, Procne, and Philomela, and the character s new form to imply the purpose of the
transformations. In the myth Daphne, Daphne s transformation into a tree is meant to protect her, but it
is more effective at silencing her. Daphne, a young daughter of the river god Penéüs, is transformed
into a laurel tree by her father on the banks of his river after a long pursuit by Apollo. While Apollo
chases Daphne, Ovid language choices imply a relationship of a hunter and prey between Apollo and
Daphne. He uses this image of hunting several times, but there is one instance where his choice of
language is most effect. The hound is about to close in with his jaws; he believes he is almost there; he

Poverty Inequality And Economic Growth
The purpose of this essay is to investigate the extent in which poverty, inequality and economic
growth are related. These three dimensions are regularly perceived as indices of the complex and
multidimensional concept of economic development . This term is not black and white however: it is a
concept that is more than just merely income analysis. Poverty can be broken down into two separate
definitions: absolute and relative. Absolute poverty describes the position of an individual who is
living on less than $2 per day and is incapable of obtaining the minimum levels of income, food,
clothing healthcare, shelter and other essentials (Todaro Smith, 2015). Relative poverty on the other
hand compares individuals means of living in different societies. Subsequently, levels of relative
poverty will differ from country to country, for example, the United Kingdom and China. Inequality
represents the uneven distribution of income within a region or country. Finally, economic growth is
typically measured by gross national income (GNI). GNI is both the total domestic and foreign output
declared by the inhabitants of a country (Todaro Smith, 2015). If there is an increase in the output of a
nation, this growth should cause GDP per capita to increase simultaneously. With this expansion in
incomes, individuals theoretically should move out of the absolute poverty level of $1.25 per day.
Although this would hypothetically occur, these parties may only emerge from the poverty

The Triton Fountain By Gian Lorenzo Bernini
The Triton Fountain was specially made for Pope Urban VIII Barberini by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The
fountain is placed at the center of the piazza; the fountain represents the God of Sea with
anthropomorphic body and huge fish tail, kneeling on an open shell supported by the tails of four
dolphins. The dolphins, leaning towards each of the four cardinal directions, open their mouths to
swallow the water of the surrounding pool, telling us that they drink up all the waters of the world.
The fins of the dolphins clutch the crown of Urban VIII, with papal tiara, keys of St. Peter, and
Barberini bees. The Triton as the subject of this fountain is a very interesting choice. According to
many historical sources, Pope Urban VIII was a very talented poet, and he was very well known for
his pursuits in this field. Triton was someone who achieved a sacred unity with nature and literature.
And as we can see from the monument, the Triton was an appropriate public monument to Pope Urban
s distinguished literary accomplishments. On the other hand, this explanation of the connection
between Triton and Pope Urban is not effective, and unquestionably does not give us full information.
American art historian John Beldon Scott has established that Urban was suspicious of pagan imagery
for fear it might lead the faithful astray. This suggests that the Triton Fountain may imply to something
more significant than just the simple literary symbol. Also, it is important to mention that at least three

Summary Of Appiah s Death Of The Duel
In the first half of Death of the Duel, Appiah begins by providing the details of a duel between two
prominent British government officials, using the specific example as a jumping point to discuss the
general idea of dueling. The form of honor being represented in this case is that of reputation and the
maintenance of regard from the general public. This concept of honor as a form of social standing is
interesting because it subverts Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs and many other psychological theories
that try to map out human instinct which places safety and security in higher regard than it does
esteem or ego. In the case of the duel, honor is considered the highest human need, even above life
itself if one considers the death toll, although that mainly applies to the aristocratic class, who had
most of their basic needs taken care of already. In the case of dueling, the society at the time seemed
to conflate the ideas of respect and honor, assuming that the characteristic of honorability
automatically entitled one to respect from peers and lower classes. Appiah, however, distinguishes the
two by noting that honor is the individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Appiah believes there is only pride in doing things out of the ordinary, I believe that it also
takes courage and honor to follow honor codes in everyday circumstances. Being honorable is difficult
sin a world where honorable behavior, contrary to Appiah s belief, is not actually standard behavior.
For example, a student witnesses two bullies harassing another student and steps in to stop them.
While this might be fairly standard honorable behavior, that does not mean the student shouldn t feel
proud of their actions and the courage they took. The pride doesn t detract from the previously
honorable actions. In his argument, Appiah seems to conflate the idea of pride personal satisfaction
with vanity and the need to boost reputation, which I hold to be two separate

The current CSI MasterFormat ™ 2004 Edition [1] comes closest to covering all the scope of work
found in the construction of Building Facilities and Site Work. It falls short in addressing the unique
requirements of estimators, schedulers and cost engineers in identifying all phases of work included in
major Infrastructure work such as Build Own and Transfer (BOT) projects. This Standard Work
Breakdown attempts to format the project into a multi level WBS suited to estimate, schedule, track
cost and measure performance on international infrastructure projects. The breakdown is also designed
to facilitate the data transfer of a standard work breakdown between common estimating, scheduling
and cost control software applications. The International Infrastructure Project Work Breakdown
Structure (WBS) The following paragraphs outline the various sub projects and phases within the
Civil Infrastructure WBS. The Sub Projects within a Civil Infrastructure Project Life Cycle Traditional
work breakdown structures in the past have only identified the Construction Divisions within a
project. This proposed work breakdown includes all phases within the life span of the project cycle,
including Development, Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Transfer and Risk.

What I Ve Done Meaning
What I ve Done by Linkin Park says thinks like face myself, cross out what I ve become, erase myself,
showing that he doesn t want to be recognized or rewarded for the things that he has done in life. He
talk a lot about wanting to stay humble about the things he has accomplished. This relates to Ritualism
because those people do not want to climb or be rewarded, they want the stay where they are and not
reach bigger goals.
Freewill by Rush talk about being different and escaping societal norms. With lyrics like, of powers

how society blindly follows a set path and how even if you are a by standing you are still choosing to

The Challenges And Functions Of The Nigeria Police Force...
The history of modern Nigeria, which dates back to post independence era starting from 1st October,
1960 when Nigeria got her independence from the colonialists is a checkered one. The Nigerian State
upon independence has witnessed myriads of challenges and threats to its national security and
cohesion, exemplified in coups and counter coups, conflicts and war with grave implication on the
polity, threatening our sovereignty as a nation and dislocating our fledgling democracy. These threats
and security challenges are most times interpreted along ethnic lines with a combustible mix of
religious colourations amidst other elitist interests. Like most countries of the world, having not
envisaged an Utopian state free from all forms of threats ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Management of internal security in Nigeria is a Herculean task due to the complex and heterogeneous
nature of Nigeria, which is often negatively exploited towards ethnic solidarity and religious
fundamentalism. It has been fraught with numerous challenges and militating factors, which have in
no small way weighed down on the operational ability, investigative capacity, law enforcement
proficiency and optimal functionality of the Nigeria Police in carrying out its statutory obligation to
the society. These challenges are myriads, both internal and external factors, though co related and
sometimes interdependent, but have gone a long way to decapitate the biggest police force in Africa.
Mathur (1995) argued that internal security management in the contemporary world has become more

Positive Aspects Of Intercultural Relationships
There are certain qualities that are necessary for the development of intercultural relationships. An
individual who pursues these relationships can find many positive and unique aspects in developing
relationships with those from other cultures. In contrast, there are those that tend to avoid people from
other cultures due to preconceived ideas about certain people groups and uncertainty in
communication as well as the desire to stay in their comfort zone in seeking others that are similar
(Samovar pgs. 387 88). Personally, my own experience with intercultural relationships has provided
for me a more balanced view of the world and the ability to look at my own culture in a whole new
way.
I believe in order to become more developed interculturally, it involves letting go of ethnocentrism. I
discovered this was an area of struggle when I first moved abroad to China. I didn t realize that my
superior cultural attitude over the host culture got in the way of developing relationships in the other
culture. How much more this can play out when we are in our own culture. Furthermore, this attitude
initially blocked my ability to learn not only from Chinese culture but other cultures in the
international community as well. As I learned that my culture has its flaws, a positive aspect in
developing interculturally relationships is that I became less ethnocentric.
I think another positive aspect in developing intercultural relationships is the ability to expand your
worldview. This

Giselle Ballet Essay
First announced as a two act performance on June 28th, 1841, Giselle is a famous ballet about a young
peasant girl who falls in love with a noble man, but dies upon hearing that he is betrothed to another
woman. During this early period of history, women were looked down on by men and viewed as being
extremely emotional. Despite this background, some people still conclude that the depiction of women
is not precise enough in this ballet. To me, however, it is very clear; I believe that Giselle
characterized women as being weak.
In the opening scenes Giselle is seen joyously dancing and being pursued by her lover Albrecht. She
dances with him for an extended period of time which seems to make her a little faint; at 0:13:45 in
the ballet she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This scene has even been named the mad scene due to her shocking response and delirious pointing.
In my opinion, if she were a strong woman, she would have realized that he wronged her and would
have not gotten so upset or thrown herself into a chaos that ended up costing her life. She also wouldn
t have had such low self esteem to say in scene 8, I should die if he does not love me anymore (42) as
if there is nothing more worth living for than a man. The idea of madness at the time was always
connected with women. Women were thought to experience overpowering emotions due to hormones
and this idea was vividly illustrated by Giselle in the mad scene . Once again, since Giselle was the
main female character, this also showed women as being feeble and less than.
Finally, I noticed that it seemed like most of the women in the ballet could not let go of something
which I believe also portrayed women as weak. In Act 2, at 1:27:55 in the ballet, Giselle places herself
in front of Albrecht to save him from the evil revenge of the Wilis. She continues to dance in his place
and protect him even though he very obviously did her wrong; he led her on in the first act. Giselle
can t even let go of a man who practically cheated on her. On the other side, the Wilis will not let go of
their past experiences with men and their need to get revenge on men in general. Some may argue that
the Wilis seem strong in the sense that they have the power to possess any man and make him

The Role Of Fate In Greek Mythology
When we look at Greek Mythology we often run into the gods of that era. Sometimes they are merely
backdrops to the human element of the story but in stories such as The Odyssey the gods play a
prominent if not vital role to the central themes of the story.
Fate has a place in the Greek world but is place is not the same as it is in other scenarios or worlds. It
is important to understand the word before we discuss it. Fate as far as Greek mythology goes is not
just fate, by most standards fate is described as things that occur for an unknown reason that no one
has any control over. However, in Greek Mythology fate simply does not just happen. The God s

That was his free will. Some say that the gods knew Odysseus would not stay and that is why they
decided to let him go. However, knowledge of an act doesn t take away the fact that Odysseus chose
himself. The gods took much of his life away and he had more reason than anyone to give up and say
to himself, This is my fate. Ann, a critic of The Odyssey says, Blaming the gods for your faults doesn t
always work, though. There s a difference between having a fate and accepting your fate. The real
heroes never give in. (Ann par. 26) That difference, between having fate and accepting it, is free will.
Once the gods have controlled the fate of certain people, the gods let the happenings take course. It is
true that the gods interfere with the lives of the people, but that will never take away their free will.
Zeus says it himself in the beginning of The Odyssey while talking to other gods upon Olympus, My
word how mortals take the gods to task! All their afflictions come from us, we hear. And what of their
own failings? (Homer 210) This statement by Zeus says that the people are indeed responsible for
themselves and they have the ability to make their own choices. Regarding the same verse Torrey
stated, This makes it seem that while men don t take responsibility in the Odyssey, the gods say they

Interpreter Of Maladies Summary
Tone portraying marital discord In Interpreter of Maladies Guilt, betrayal, and romance all different
types of tone or the attitude of the author towards the audience, characters, subject or the work itself.
In the short story Interpreter of Maladies Jhumpa Lahiri uses tone and mood in many different ways to
portray marital discord in the Das and Kapasi family, along with the feelings that come with it. Mrs.
Das, a married woman who is not happy in her relationship betrayed her husband. Mrs. Das had an
affair with one of Mr, Das friend after he found out London Pharmaceutical Company hired him,
Bobby was conceived in the afternoon, on a sofa littered with rubber teething toys, after the friend
learned that a London pharmaceutical company had hired him, while Ronny cried to be freed from his
playpen. She made no protest when the friend touched the small of her back as she was about to make
a pot of coffee, then pulled her against his crisp navy suit. He made love to her swiftly, in silence, with
an expertise she had never known, without the meaningful expressions and smiles Raj always insisted
on afterward. Pg. 64, This shows when Mrs. Das had an affair on Mr. Das and betrayed him. Jhumpa
Lahiri includes this betrayal because it is a huge factor in how Mrs. Das acts around Mr. Das. Along
with the effect of how Mrs. Das acts towards Mr. Das it is the start of marital discord between them.
Mrs. Das, will now to deal with guilt because of what she did to her husband. Mrs

Access To College Students
In this day and age, technology takes center stage. Temple College students understand this well,
considering nearly all school assignments require access to a computer and the internet. This need for
technology prompts a vast majority of students to take advantage of the computers provided by the
school. However, these students are forced to maneuver around blocked websites and other internet
restrictions put in place by T.C. Temple College students should have access to all websites when they
are using T.C. computers on the grounds that students are mature, they are paying for access, and
restricted access to the internet limits students resources. College students are mature enough to have
access to the full, uncensored internet. Society expects young adults, more specifically college
students, to manage their own lives and time. If they fail to do so, it is their own fault. If they choose

Quadratic Formula Research Paper
Completing the square is use to prove the quadratic formula. Given ax^2+bx+c=0 we first have to
make the coefficient of x^2 to be one. We divided the original formula by a: x^2+b/c x+c/a=0/a since
0/a we still have our quadratic equation. Subtract that c/a in both sides: x^2+b/c x+c/a c/a= c/a
remember that b/a is b/2(a) now we will have to add it to the root of two: x^2+b/a x+b^2/(4a^2
)=b^2/(4a^2 ) c/a next is to set up our denominators to be the same we should have
(x+b/2a)^2=b^2/(4a^2 ) 4ac/(4a^2 ) now that our denominators are the same we need to combine like
terms: (b^2 4ac)/(4a^2 ) in this step it resembles somewhat a part of the quadratic formula but we still

Writing the y intercept in interval notation is [15/8,∞). The axis of symmetry has been found also
which is where the x of the vertex is meaning that it is x=1/4. We will now find where does it
increases and decreases, this should be easy now that we have our vertex and knowledge that all
quadratic equations are parabolas. We know that the domain is ( ∞,∞) any line coming from the
negative side it will decrease while the positive side will increase. Then the side that is decreasing will
stop to decrease at ( ∞,1/4), it will then begin to increase at (1/4,∞). This time we are finding the x and
y intercept, beginning with the x intercept we are going to use the discriminant of the quadratic
equation which is b^2 4ac. Plugging the numbers, it will be ( 1)^2 4(2)(2) the solution will be a
negative fifteen. The rule of a discriminant is that there cannot be negative numbers for x, this time
there are no x intercept. the x intercept does not exist we will replace it with a zero so the y intercept
can be found, by plugging the numbers y=2(0)^2 0+2 we will have the answer of y=2. The quadratic
equation will be crossing the y intercept at (0,2). Now writing the

man.
UCLA professor Anne K. Mellor points to the Creature s Mongolian race by noting that at the
beginning of the novel, Walton and his men have set off on their voyage to China by way of the North
Pole.
Mary Shelley describes this newborn giant as having yellow skin, black and flowing hair, the dun
white or light grey brown of both irises of his eyes and sockets. The Creature is definitely not
Caucasian, nor is he the same race as his maker. Even the character known as Walton notices the
difference in appearance between Victor and the traveller preceding him, as he notes Victor was not as
the other traveller seemed to be, a savage inhabitant of some undisclosed island, but an European.
When the monster meets Frankenstein for the first true meeting in the novel, he steals away the
scientist and takes him to his cave where he has stayed. He tells him the story of his

the top down network design process and design a network based on those business goals and

On Monday, November 28th, many people in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee were forced to

the Southeastern United States due to the lack of rain. This lack of rain has been very tragic for our
ecosystem, because it has caused these fires. In the Southeast, it has been the driest conditions in the
past decade, and the ground has been so hard. These fires are spreading very rapidly and it affects our
society in a terrible way. Although firefighters are making progress, the fires keep spreading due to the
low humidity and winds. They release carbon dioxide into the air and destroy homes and habitats. To

George Washington The Indispensable Man Analysis
George Washington is a towering historical figure who is considered the father of the United States.
James Thomas Flexner captures the man, not the myth, behind this legendary icon in one concise
single volume biography, Washington: the Indispensable Man. This book is a condensed but altogether
new version of Flexner s previous four volume biography of George Washington. This smaller scale
book is well written, and explores Washington as the human being behind the legendary icon (New
York Times Book Review) to bring the reader to a closer relation to a man removed by time and
history. Of time and history, George Washington had a great deal more of it which Flexner had to
cover. Washington was a major national figure for twenty four years from his election as Commander
in Chief to his death, and he was hardly twenty when his role in the French and Indian War made him
internationally known. The wide ranging subject of Washington must have been difficult to fit into one
encapsulated volume, but Flexner manages not only to do that but also writes straightforward in
thought with flowing ideas and logical conclusions. The first chapter, of course, starts from George s
Birth and tells of his childhood of growing admiration for the wilds of the frontier and the British
Army. A little later, the book moves forward to Washington s first military blunder in inciting the
French and Indian War which makes the name George Washington internationally known. After this
incident, Flexner

Decriminalizing Prostitution
Prostitution, commonly referred to as the world s oldest profession, is a divisive issue due to the
religious nature of the argument. Few arguments exist against the decriminalization of prostitutes
themselves that are not rooted in personal belief and morality. The Bible rejects prostitution, so the
masses do as well. But lack of religious bias is of utmost importance when considering public policy
in a nation with freedom of religion; therefore, the biggest factors to consider regarding prostitution
policy are how it will affect the physical health, social progress, and prevalence of human trafficking
in the nation. Prostitution will continue to exist as it always had regardless of its legal status. It is the

While proponents of prostitution legalization claim it promotes women s independence and autonomy,
opponents argue that it exploits and objectifies women. In terms of putting ideology into practice,
criminalization fails. The neoconservative ideology behind criminalization implies that women are
unfit to make their own decisions about their sexuality. Under criminalization in the United States,
females are arrested at much higher rates than males, despite the fact that when including johns,
pimps, and brothel owners, there are probably more men involved in the practice (McKim 1).
Additionally, every state (except some parts of Nevada) in the U.S. criminalizes women who sell sex,
but only half of those states also have laws criminalizing men who buy sex (Mathieson 374). This
discriminatory enforcement of prostitution laws undermines the gender equality this country is trying
to achieve. The legalization and regulation of prostitution argues that the best way to promote women
s autonomy is by allowing them to take control of their own bodies and choose their own profession.
Due to the imbalance between men and women within the sex trade, legalization advocates support
allowing the exchange of sexual services for money between consenting adults. It is a victimless
crime; however the question remains whether it perpetuates a culture of objectification of women.

Current Rate Of Third Semester Pathway Students
As a Data Analyst, I am responsible for assisting in projections and forecasting of enrollment as well
as institutional research projects. This includes use of Excel and R to run statistical analyses in
answering enrollment and research questions. Key to projecting enrollment is a file we use called the
Decision Model We track various aspects of enrollment to help predict future enrollment. For
example, we track the amount of third semester pathway students since they will likely be
matriculating into the Online Degree Program. We also track the percentage of third semester students
who have historically matriculated. This way we can apply the same percentage to the current rate of
third semester Pathway students to estimate new online students. This same principle is applied all
throughout the decision model, enrollment is broken out into categories of different students and
indicators that can help predict that category.
Regression analysis is used often to answer research questions. Using R, linear regression helps to
shed light on the effects of any number of factors into college success. In addition, I have been able to
use skills from excel courses on a regular basis to create charts and graphs as well as prepare and

Culture is always changing and it defines an individual s every day life. Everyone experiences culture
differently, which it is why it is difficult to give a definitive definition. The simplest way to define
culture is as, an experiences that shapes a person s worldview. Some of the different factors that shape
culture are race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion, age, education and geographical location.
Culture is not static; it is spread amongst societies and embraced in different ways. Learning about
someone s cultural experience is the key to learning about that person and truly getting to know them

The cultural lecture explains that change is spread in two different forms, invention and diffusion.
Invention is defined as the creation of something new whereas diffusion is a copy of something that
has already been invented.
An example of this is frozen yogurt. This delicious dessert is nothing new to people who live in Los
Angeles County; restaurants like Pinkberry, Yogurtland and Menchies have been around for many
years but for the people of Kern County the frozen treat is new. Frozen yogurt is a borrowed idea from
other cultures that eventually was brought to the United States, but even once it was in the states it has
taken a few years for the idea to spread. Learning about different cultures and wanting what they have
is the most basic example of how cultures change, spread and intertwine. Different cultures can offer
different things which can be beneficial to other cultures that have not yet discovered a new
technology or skill. The welcoming nature that some societies have of different cultures is the reason
why European culture was so easily spread but the same can be said about cultures that did not
embrace cultural change.
When Jared Diamond describes how western cultures eventually dominated the world in his book,

  • 2. A Brief Note On Preventative Medicine And Education Preventative Medicine and Education Poor health and homelessness has been connected through multiple studies. Having poor health can cause homelessness. On the flip side, being homeless can also cause poor health. Being homeless brings a list of complications including limited access to getting proper health care. This causes the health of the homeless population in the United States to be worse than that of the general population. Common health problems in the homeless population include: mental health problems, substance abuse problems, bronchitis and pneumonia, problems caused by being outdoors, wound and skin infections, along with the complications that follow each of the listed problems (Medicine Plus, 2016). Along with the list of problems previously stated, many homeless women are victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Children often have high rates of emotional and behavioral problems, many times caused from having witnessed abuse. Studies have shown 31 46% report having a chronic medical problem. (NHCHC, 2001, p.1). According to these statistics almost half of the homeless population are suffering from chronic health problems. The majority of which will not receive proper care to cure the health problems. The homeless population, in order to address the living challenges, they use extraordinary amounts of human services. Visits to a facility that provides health care is much higher for a homeless person than the general population. Homeless adults are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Aristotle s Views Of Poetry Essay Socratic moral philosophy is important in poetry because it engages poets in rational thinking when making poems. Poetry is mostly communicated through written texts; it can be used to expand one s knowledge of himself or herself and the world. However, philosophers disparage poetry by its composition and senses such as imitation, representation, fiction, and expression. On this note, Socrates used philosophical explorations to criticize the role of poetry in the world. Many poets engage in imitation and imagination in their poetic works, which limits the chances of poetry enhancing knowledge in the society. The branch points between poets and Socrates are imitation versus and imagination versus reason. Socrates was an influential Greek philosopher; however, he never wrote any book and his ideologies are mostly presented by Plato, who was his student. Plato explains Socrates attitude towards poetry in his books, the Republic and the Symposium. Afterward, he offers his perceptions and solutions to the matter. Plato s Republic explains Socrates mindset towards poetry censorship. Socrates argued that poetry lacked wisdom because there was no censorship of works of poetry. As a result, poets can write about anything they wish to inscribe, which enhances imitation. On this note, Socrates argued that poetry exposed citizens to different forms of imitation, which would corrupt their minds because they had no restrictions. On the other hand, Plato offers a solution towards the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Comparing The American Zoo And Aquariums One of the many things people go to for fun while growing up is going to a zoo or an aquarium. Whether it s with their family during the summer, or during the school year in elementary with the entire class. It s a way to have a good time with friends and family and also a way to learn more about certain species and their averments. In North American 140 Million people visit zoos annually: that s more than baseball, basketball, football, and hockey combined. At a global scale that 700 million people! However, there are still many people that believe that zoos and aquariums are plain and simply unethical. This is not true because many zoos across the country have been known to contribute in the saving of endangered species, and also helped other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People will say that they don t treat them right in zoos, and that they don t have enough rooms to roam around, but zookeepers and scientists give all the animals specific training, exercise and food to meet their nutritional requirements. Zoos may actually more beneficial for some of the animals because they don t have competition. Greco say in his article, In the wild, food resources are temporally and spatially dispersed this means that it may be hard to find food hasn t already been eating or that isn t too far away. Next, exercise plans have been implanted especially for elephants to reduce pod dermatitis, a bone disease they are generally prone to and also elephants tend to be obese. To prevent this they teach elephants to stretch and staff directed walking. (Greco 3) Moreover, staff are required to give good hygiene to most animals in the zo to prevent any diseases and funguses. This shows the amazing care zoos give the animals to give them a healthy lifestyle. In conclusion, zoos and aquariums are important in many ways. One being fo the education of students, two being the help they give animals that are endangered, and three is the fact they give good care the animals so they will be in a good healthy condition. Although zoos haven t always been as great as they now, they have change in positive way. So, perhaps people should also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Examining The Place Of The Russian Minority Examining the Place of the Russian Minority in Latvia: Aliens, non citizens or stateless persons? Introduction The region of Latvia has a long history of occupation by foreign powers and so its ethnicity is quite varied. The Latvian Republic is one of the Baltic States located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Along with its neighbours Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It is when Latvia gained its status as an independent state that the most crucial period for the Russian speaking residents began, as at that time the country s main issue was the status of its 1.1 million Russian speaking residents. Under Latvia s 2000 census (Heleniak, 2006), 30 per cent of the country s 2.4 million population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The year independence was restored was defining for many thousands of Russians permanently living in Latvia. On 3rd March 1991 a nonbinding advisory referendum took place with the result that 73% of all Latvian residents supported the notion for independent Latvia (Troitsky, 2011). The Popular Front of Latvia, the national movement which was promoting the idea of segregation, advocated that all permanent residents will be entitled to and qualified for Latvian citizenship (Melvin, 1995, p. 34). All those who want to be citizens of Latvia can be (Lieven, 1997, p. 304) stated Anatolijs Gorbunovs, Chairman of the Latvian Supreme Council. However, the universal citizenship for all permanent residents was not adopted. Latvia restored the rights and status only for those persons who were identified as citizens under the 1919 Law together with their descendants (Aleinikoff Klusmeyer, 2001, p. 31). Thereby, for the majority of ethnic non Latvians citizenship was not granted, even when the biggest portion of them were born in Latvia. This was seen as an attempt to suppress national extinction (Mole, 2012, p. 89 90) caused by, according to the radicals in Latvia, the Russian people. Those people became non citizens not holding citizenship to any other country and without the right to vote. In Latvia as well as in Estonia the Russian population is seen as a reminder of their unhappy past (Best, 2013, p. 34), thus the Russian people are not welcomed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If you are like me you do a search on your favorite search engine for the solution to the problem. This article gives you some simple fixes to common problems computer users run into online. Problem #1 One problem I run into often is that my computer will occasionally start to run really slow. There are many reasons this may occur including a hard disk drive which is running short on available disk space, bad files left from software programs that have been installed or uninstalled, corrupt data, missing Windows updates or outdated drivers, a computer that is overheating because of a problem with the fan, corrupt OS, or simply bad Hardware. The solution to a slow running computer is based on which of the above reasons can be attributed to the problem. To free up hard disk drive space you can take a few steps to free up space. You should have between 200 and 500MB of free hard disk drive space on your computer to accommodate swap files and temporary files. To free up space run Disk Cleanup , uninstall old programs or games that you no longer use. If you are running Windows XP or Vista you can disable System Restore, disable hibernation or delete temporary files. Running Scandisk can insure that there is nothing physically wrong with the hard disk drive and running Defrag will make sure that the data is arranged in the best possible order. Then I decided to choose something that was very important to me. Shooting the basketball, and more specifically the technique in performing a free throw. I thought by looking more closely at the details of a movement I have been doing since a small child. I thought possibly I could learn something that would give me an advantage in my shot. The application of this particular movement is for shooting a free throw, which is a stand still uncontested shot. This is where you want to focus on the rim and extend at the elbow, and extending at the wrist. Now to talk about what all this really means and how you get the ball from your hand to the rim. When we do it, we consider it to be very simple, but it is actually a very complex movement, involving many different muscles. Many muscles are involved, some more than others. I will first talk about the ones used the least. The shoulder girdle involves muscles that are key to the movement, but are mostly used in stabilization of the shoulder. The Trapezius and the Rhomboid muscles are stabilizers of the shoulder along with the rotator cuff muscles including the Supraspinatis, Infraspinatis, Teres Minor, and Subscapularis which provide dynamic stability of the shoulder. All these muscles are key, but are not involved much in the actual movement. The Serratus Anterior is commonly used in movements drawing the scapula forward with slight upward rotation, and would be used in shooting the basketball and works in conjunction with Pectoralis Minor. Now we will get into some of the muscles actually doing the work when shooting the free throw. The Deltoid, which is one of the most important muscles involved in any shoulder movement is responsible for the movement of the Humerus. Any movement of the Humerus will involve the Deltoid. The Coracobrachialis assist in flexion of the shoulder. Other muscles involved in the cocking phase of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Does the concept of Human Resource Management present a radical novelty or is it a mere repackaging of personnel management? Introduction During the 1980 s, a new management concept referred to as Human Resource Management (HRM) became very fashionable. At that time, many academics questioned whether HMR was simply a renaming of the previously known personnel management (PM) tool, or whether it was, as some claimed, a radically different philosophy and approach to management of people at work (1). Firstly, it seems appropriate to define HRM. However, the definition of HRM this has been widely debated, and so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Toward the end of the 1980 s as more and more academics continued to produce a wealth of literature on the subject of HRM, it became clear that there was a recurring theme for those companies that appeared to perform extremely well in these market conditions. It became obvious in these increasingly dynamic markets that companies that were proactive to market change were able to do so as a result of motivated workforce. The question that was begging to be asked was how they were able to this so well ? The answer was through involved management styles that were instilling a culture in the workforce that was proactive rather than reactive. This is one of the key differences that will be referred back to later. It was suggested that these had been brought on by the intense competition and pressure, which meant a competent PM was more necessary than ever. There were several other socioeconomic changes that all acted as antecedents to the development and reshaping of PM that became known as HRM. These included increasingly strident demands of shareholders, changing work force (flexibility, part time largely through the employment of women), a changing age structure of the workforce, the young moving in the direction of private and service sectors, hence less prone to unionisation and finally increasingly mechanised manufacturing processes through new technologies. Differences between HRM and PM The second part of this essay looks at whether HRM was in actual fact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Poverty does not only destroy a person s life, it is crippling to a country its self. Canada was hit hard with poverty, especially during and after the Great Depression and our government knew there was a need for help. Each different type of welfare program has different rules, eligibility, benefit and provisions regarding special assistance. Throughout the duration of the past seventy years, our government has made it easier to receive this social program, so that Canada can fight off poverty. In August 2007, defaults in mortgage market for subprime borrowers sent a shudder through the financial markets, leading to the worst U.S financial crisis since the Great Depression. Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Fed, described the financial crisis as a once in a century credit tsunami . (Mishkin and Eakins 2012). In the end, these unregulated originators were concerned on their commission fee, for personal gains, not if any of the loans were going to default. The Originate to Distribute model plays an essential role, on the unregulated mortgage originators perspective and agenda. Many mortgage brokers and lenders operated under the originate to distribute model whereby they originated loans solely for the purpose of selling them. This model allowed them to earn loan origination fees without incurring any type of credit risk. Many times this model, allowed the unregulated originators to take additional fees for collecting loan payments, escrowing and making payments for property taxes and insurance premiums. • 12. Rose For Emily Respect Respecting the elderly is a lesson that most people are taught early on, and there is good reason for it, but respecting and enabling are not synonymous, especially when heinous crimes are committed. This is exactly what happens in William Faulkner s Southern gothic short story A Rose For Emily or, at least, that is the tale told on the surface. Underneath the story of an old disturbed woman s death is the author s commentary on the nature of Southern pride and tendency to hold on to the past. Much like the in the current day, the respect that old Southern ways demands from the region s inhabitants has not changed and will likely remain a constant fixture for generations to come. Faulkner gets his overarching theme of respect for the past across by using the characters of Miss Emily and the town as a whole as symbols for the past that is respected and the living people that must continue. The subgenre of Southern Gothic literature is one that explores all kinds of hard and gritty themes that can often leave the reader chilled; one such theme that are explored in this particular piece of Southern ... The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him to do, which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way. Some may see the story in the poem as a description of a man who had an unfulfilling life because he did exactly what was expected of him. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or making a change, the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Auden s poem can be seen from two perspectives: the man who lived an ideal life that many people sought to have or the man who lived an unfulfilling, ordinary life which caused him to blend in ... The man in the poem fulfilled society s expectations, but at the same time, the man may not have had a fulfilling life. These two ideas could not be the only interpretations of the poem. • 16. Ovid s Metamorphoses Character Analysis The transformations in Ovid s Metamorphoses serve several purposes. The most common meaning of the transformations is to punish or to protect. Ovid distinguishes among purposes through his word choice. In the myths of Metamorphoses, Ovid s uses the descriptions of transformations in Daphne, Arachne, and Tereus, Procne, and Philomela, and the character s new form to imply the purpose of the transformations. In the myth Daphne, Daphne s transformation into a tree is meant to protect her, but it is more effective at silencing her. Daphne, a young daughter of the river god Penéüs, is transformed into a laurel tree by her father on the banks of his river after a long pursuit by Apollo. While Apollo chases Daphne, Ovid language choices imply a relationship of a hunter and prey between Apollo and Daphne. • 17. Poverty Inequality And Economic Growth The purpose of this essay is to investigate the extent in which poverty, inequality and economic growth are related. These three dimensions are regularly perceived as indices of the complex and multidimensional concept of economic development . This term is not black and white however: it is a concept that is more than just merely income analysis. Poverty can be broken down into two separate definitions: absolute and relative. Absolute poverty describes the position of an individual who is living on less than $2 per day and is incapable of obtaining the minimum levels of income, food, clothing healthcare, shelter and other essentials (Todaro Smith, 2015). Relative poverty on the other hand compares individuals means of living in different societies. Subsequently, levels of relative poverty will differ from country to country, for example, the United Kingdom and China. Inequality represents the uneven distribution of income within a region or country. Finally, economic growth is typically measured by gross national income (GNI). GNI is both the total domestic and foreign output declared by the inhabitants of a country (Todaro Smith, 2015). If there is an increase in the output of a nation, this growth should cause GDP per capita to increase simultaneously. With this expansion in incomes, individuals theoretically should move out of the absolute poverty level of $1.25 per day. Although this would hypothetically occur, these parties may only emerge from the poverty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. The Triton Fountain By Gian Lorenzo Bernini The Triton Fountain was specially made for Pope Urban VIII Barberini by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The fountain is placed at the center of the piazza; the fountain represents the God of Sea with anthropomorphic body and huge fish tail, kneeling on an open shell supported by the tails of four dolphins. The dolphins, leaning towards each of the four cardinal directions, open their mouths to swallow the water of the surrounding pool, telling us that they drink up all the waters of the world. The fins of the dolphins clutch the crown of Urban VIII, with papal tiara, keys of St. Peter, and Barberini bees. The Triton as the subject of this fountain is a very interesting choice. According to many historical sources, Pope Urban VIII was a very talented poet, and he was very well known for his pursuits in this field. Triton was someone who achieved a sacred unity with nature and literature. And as we can see from the monument, the Triton was an appropriate public monument to Pope Urban s distinguished literary accomplishments. On the other hand, this explanation of the connection between Triton and Pope Urban is not effective, and unquestionably does not give us full information. American art historian John Beldon Scott has established that Urban was suspicious of pagan imagery for fear it might lead the faithful astray. This suggests that the Triton Fountain may imply to something more significant than just the simple literary symbol. Also, it is important to mention that at least three ... • 19. Summary Of Appiah s Death Of The Duel In the first half of Death of the Duel, Appiah begins by providing the details of a duel between two prominent British government officials, using the specific example as a jumping point to discuss the general idea of dueling. The form of honor being represented in this case is that of reputation and the maintenance of regard from the general public. This concept of honor as a form of social standing is interesting because it subverts Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs and many other psychological theories that try to map out human instinct which places safety and security in higher regard than it does esteem or ego. In the case of the duel, honor is considered the highest human need, even above life itself if one considers the death toll, although that mainly applies to the aristocratic class, who had most of their basic needs taken care of already. In the case of dueling, the society at the time seemed to conflate the ideas of respect and honor, assuming that the characteristic of honorability automatically entitled one to respect from peers and lower classes. While this might be fairly standard honorable behavior, that does not mean the student shouldn t feel proud of their actions and the courage they took. An individual who pursues these relationships can find many positive and unique aspects in developing relationships with those from other cultures. In contrast, there are those that tend to avoid people from other cultures due to preconceived ideas about certain people groups and uncertainty in communication as well as the desire to stay in their comfort zone in seeking others that are similar (Samovar pgs. 387 88). Personally, my own experience with intercultural relationships has provided for me a more balanced view of the world and the ability to look at my own culture in a whole new way. I believe in order to become more developed interculturally, it involves letting go of ethnocentrism. I discovered this was an area of struggle when I first moved abroad to China. Giselle Ballet Essay First announced as a two act performance on June 28th, 1841, Giselle is a famous ballet about a young peasant girl who falls in love with a noble man, but dies upon hearing that he is betrothed to another woman. During this early period of history, women were looked down on by men and viewed as being extremely emotional. Despite this background, some people still conclude that the depiction of women is not precise enough in this ballet. To me, however, it is very clear; I believe that Giselle characterized women as being weak. In the opening scenes Giselle is seen joyously dancing and being pursued by her lover Albrecht. She also wouldn t have had such low self esteem to say in scene 8, I should die if he does not love me anymore (42) as if there is nothing more worth living for than a man. The idea of madness at the time was always connected with women. Women were thought to experience overpowering emotions due to hormones and this idea was vividly illustrated by Giselle in the mad scene . Once again, since Giselle was the main female character, this also showed women as being feeble and less than. Finally, I noticed that it seemed like most of the women in the ballet could not let go of something which I believe also portrayed women as weak. In Act 2, at 1:27:55 in the ballet, Giselle places herself in front of Albrecht to save him from the evil revenge of the Wilis. She continues to dance in his place and protect him even though he very obviously did her wrong; he led her on in the first act. Giselle can t even let go of a man who practically cheated on her. We divided the original formula by a: x^2+b/c x+c/a=0/a since 0/a we still have our quadratic equation. Subtract that c/a in both sides: x^2+b/c x+c/a c/a= c/a remember that b/a is b/2(a) now we will have to add it to the root of two: x^2+b/a x+b^2/(4a^2 )=b^2/(4a^2 ) c/a next is to set up our denominators to be the same we should have (x+b/2a)^2=b^2/(4a^2 ) 4ac/(4a^2 ) now that our denominators are the same we need to combine like terms: (b^2 4ac)/(4a^2 ) in this step it resembles somewhat a part of the quadratic formula but we still missing more steps. We know that the domain is ( ∞,∞) any line coming from the negative side it will decrease while the positive side will increase. Then the side that is decreasing will stop to decrease at ( ∞,1/4), it will then begin to increase at (1/4,∞). • 34. Wildfire On Monday, November 28th, many people in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee were forced to evacuate, as a horrible wildfire exploded. The wildfires have been caused due to the terrible drought in the Southeastern United States due to the lack of rain. This lack of rain has been very tragic for our ecosystem, because it has caused these fires. In the Southeast, it has been the driest conditions in the past decade, and the ground has been so hard. These fires are spreading very rapidly and it affects our society in a terrible way. Although firefighters are making progress, the fires keep spreading due to the low humidity and winds. They release carbon dioxide into the air and destroy homes and habitats. To begin with, at least 14,000 people have evacuated this area due to the wildfires spreading so rapidly. Most of East Tennessee has been in exceptional or severe drought all summer , said Sam Roberts, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also releases a key greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide diffuses from your cells into your bloodstream and through your lungs. Due to the fire, some people are at risk of carbon dioxide intoxication, so it it best to wear masks. If the carbon dioxide becomes more serious, death could occur. The fire had not reached the hotel, but smoke had permeated the building, making it hard to breathe, he said. Guests stood in the hotel lobby with masks over their faces (Park). There were many people who were waiting to be evacuated safely, but there were just too many people. Several evacuation shelters opened as about 1,300 people stayed overnight at the local community center and park. Shaken residents, some needing oxygen after inhaling so much smoke, huddled with each other at the shelters (Park). Everyone had to wear masks because the air was so horrible to breathe in. • 35. George Washington The Indispensable Man Analysis George Washington is a towering historical figure who is considered the father of the United States. James Thomas Flexner captures the man, not the myth, behind this legendary icon in one concise single volume biography, Washington: the Indispensable Man. This book is a condensed but altogether new version of Flexner s previous four volume biography of George Washington. This smaller scale book is well written, and explores Washington as the human being behind the legendary icon (New York Times Book Review) to bring the reader to a closer relation to a man removed by time and history. Of time and history, George Washington had a great deal more of it which Flexner had to cover. Washington was a major national figure for twenty four years from his election as Commander in Chief to his death, and he was hardly twenty when his role in the French and Indian War made him internationally known. The wide ranging subject of Washington must have been difficult to fit into one encapsulated volume, but Flexner manages not only to do that but also writes straightforward in thought with flowing ideas and logical conclusions. The first chapter, of course, starts from George s Birth and tells of his childhood of growing admiration for the wilds of the frontier and the British Army. A little later, the book moves forward to Washington s first military blunder in inciting the French and Indian War which makes the name George Washington internationally known. After this incident, Flexner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Decriminalizing Prostitution Prostitution, commonly referred to as the world s oldest profession, is a divisive issue due to the religious nature of the argument. Few arguments exist against the decriminalization of prostitutes themselves that are not rooted in personal belief and morality. The Bible rejects prostitution, so the masses do as well. But lack of religious bias is of utmost importance when considering public policy in a nation with freedom of religion; therefore, the biggest factors to consider regarding prostitution policy are how it will affect the physical health, social progress, and prevalence of human trafficking in the nation. Prostitution will continue to exist as it always had regardless of its legal status. It is the responsibility of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While proponents of prostitution legalization claim it promotes women s independence and autonomy, opponents argue that it exploits and objectifies women. In terms of putting ideology into practice, criminalization fails. The neoconservative ideology behind criminalization implies that women are unfit to make their own decisions about their sexuality. Under criminalization in the United States, females are arrested at much higher rates than males, despite the fact that when including johns, pimps, and brothel owners, there are probably more men involved in the practice (McKim 1). Additionally, every state (except some parts of Nevada) in the U.S. criminalizes women who sell sex, but only half of those states also have laws criminalizing men who buy sex (Mathieson 374). This discriminatory enforcement of prostitution laws undermines the gender equality this country is trying to achieve. The legalization and regulation of prostitution argues that the best way to promote women s autonomy is by allowing them to take control of their own bodies and choose their own profession. Due to the imbalance between men and women within the sex trade, legalization advocates support allowing the exchange of sexual services for money between consenting adults. It is a victimless crime; however the question remains whether it perpetuates a culture of objectification of women. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Current Rate Of Third Semester Pathway Students As a Data Analyst, I am responsible for assisting in projections and forecasting of enrollment as well as institutional research projects. This includes use of Excel and R to run statistical analyses in answering enrollment and research questions. Key to projecting enrollment is a file we use called the Decision Model We track various aspects of enrollment to help predict future enrollment. For example, we track the amount of third semester pathway students since they will likely be matriculating into the Online Degree Program. We also track the percentage of third semester students who have historically matriculated. This way we can apply the same percentage to the current rate of third semester Pathway students to estimate new online students. This same principle is applied all throughout the decision model, enrollment is broken out into categories of different students and indicators that can help predict that category. Regression analysis is used often to answer research questions. Using R, linear regression helps to shed light on the effects of any number of factors into college success. In addition, I have been able to use skills from excel courses on a regular basis to create charts and graphs as well as prepare and analyze spreadsheets. Finally, the principles of thinking like an economist often contribute to projects that I worked on. Mostly when I ve needed to understand why students are behaving in a certain way or thinking about how to present data in the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Culture is always changing and it defines an individual’s... Culture is always changing and it defines an individual s every day life. Everyone experiences culture differently, which it is why it is difficult to give a definitive definition. The simplest way to define culture is as, an experiences that shapes a person s worldview. Some of the different factors that shape culture are race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion, age, education and geographical location. Culture is not static; it is spread amongst societies and embraced in different ways. Learning about someone s cultural experience is the key to learning about that person and truly getting to know them because their culture defines who they are. It is always interesting to meat someone for the first time because the curiosity of who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cultural lecture explains that change is spread in two different forms, invention and diffusion. Invention is defined as the creation of something new whereas diffusion is a copy of something that has already been invented. An example of this is frozen yogurt. This delicious dessert is nothing new to people who live in Los Angeles County; restaurants like Pinkberry, Yogurtland and Menchies have been around for many years but for the people of Kern County the frozen treat is new. Frozen yogurt is a borrowed idea from other cultures that eventually was brought to the United States, but even once it was in the states it has taken a few years for the idea to spread. Learning about different cultures and wanting what they have is the most basic example of how cultures change, spread and intertwine. Different cultures can offer different things which can be beneficial to other cultures that have not yet discovered a new technology or skill. The welcoming nature that some societies have of different cultures is the reason why European culture was so easily spread but the same can be said about cultures that did not embrace cultural change. When Jared Diamond describes how western cultures eventually dominated the world in his book, Guns, Germs, and Steel , he fails to say why European culture swept the world. Diamond believes ...
