Mitosis is the process of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and type of chromosomes as the parent nucleus. It has four main stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase the chromosomes condense and the nuclear envelope breaks down. In metaphase the chromosomes line up along the center of the cell. In anaphase the chromosomes are pulled towards opposite poles of the cell.
