Mitochondria are organelles that produce ATP through aerobic respiration. They have a double membrane structure, with an outer membrane, intermembrane space, inner membrane, and matrix. The inner membrane contains proteins for oxidative phosphorylation that generate ATP. Mitochondria contain their own DNA and ribosomes and are only inherited from mothers. Their primary function is to produce energy for the cell but they are also involved in other processes like cell signaling, growth, and death.
