3. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
INTRODUCTION
Mining involves digging or stripping ore deposit
out of the earth’s crust. It provides us with our
daily needs but at a cost, which is the negative
environmental impacts attached with it.
4. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
WHAT IS MINING?
Mining is an excavation made in the earth to
extract mineral.
5. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
METHODS OF MINING
SURFACE MINING METHOD
Mechanical Extraction Method
• Open Pit Mining
• Quarrying
• Open Cast
Aqueous Extraction Method
• Placer Mining
• Solution Mining
6. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
METHODS OF MINING
SURFACE MINING METHODs
7. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
METHODS OF MINING
UNDERGROUND MINING METHODS
8. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
CONCENTRATION AND PURIFICATION OF
MINERAL
• Milling
• Leaching
• Smelting
9. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
IMPORTANCE OF MINING
Mining provides us with essential resources. Those
resources are processed and used for the betterment of
mankind. Some of the things mining provides us are:
ELECTRICITY
STEEL
CEMENT
CONCRETE
FERTILIZER
JEWELRY
10. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF
MINING
Every Mining Activities Has Environmental
Impacts. Some Major Ones Are:
Physical disturbances to the landscape
(exploration, overburden removal, drilling..etc)
Air pollution
(Drilling, blasting, processing..etc)
Water pollution
(Leaching, smelting, solid waste disposal..etc)
11. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF
MINING
12. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
• PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Because modern civilization depends on resources been
mined, we cant stop mining. Therefore, measures have
been installed to minimize the negative impacts mining
has on the environment. Some measures are:
RECLAMATION
SOIL TREATMENT
WATER TREATMENT
PREVENTION OF ACID ROCK DRAINAGE
CONTROL OF GAS EMISSIONS, AND
RECYCLING.
13. MINING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
CONCLUSION
Mining has been supplying mankind resources that are essential
to modern civilization. But this benefit comes with a heavy
cost and that cost is the negative environmental impacts
associated with mining. So in order to continue mining,
measures have been put in place to mitigate those negative
impacts.
