Definition
Bucket Capacity is a measure of the maximum volume of the material that can be
accommodated inside the bucket of an exacavator,
calculation of the bucket capacity of a
Bucket Capacity = with x High x Length
1.1 Calculation of Bucket Capacity
Calculate the bucket capacity of an excavator that has a width of 64 sq. ft. and a
height of 13.66 ft.
Volume = cross sectional Area x Height
= 64 sq. ft. X 13.666
= 874.24 cubic yards
27 cubic feet
= 32.38 cu. yd
Front End Loader
Front End Loader is the loading equipment which is used to shovel and unload the
material with the bucket in the front of the tire. Because most of them walk on tires,
they are generally called wheel loaders. In large open pit mines, the front end loader
can be used with excavator to pile up blasted ore, clean up the working operation
which is difficult for the excavator at the benches. In small and medium mines, front
end loaders are often used as combined mining, loading and transportation equipment.
90 T on Dumper
A mining dump truck with payload capacity of 90 metric tons are designed for
transportation of rocks in severe mining conditions of deep open-pit mines, at open-
cast mining of mineral deposits on technological haul roads under various climatic
operating conditions (ambient temperature from – 50 t 50 degrees Celsius)
Excavator
An Excavator is an heavy machinery equipment used to dig raw material in mining
operations, particularly surface mining. Different extractors are used in mining from
backhoes to bucket wheel excavators to power shovels and dragline excavators. While
some mining excavators may seen essentially no different than the typical backhoe
excavator seen at construction site, other machines of this type are among the largest
machines ever built and are capable of excavating hundreds of cubic meters of
materials per hour.
Electric Shovel
Electric Shovel also known as Cable shovel, Stripping shovel, Front shovel or Electric
mining Shovel are a large machine amounts of material using a cables and bucket.
They are electric powered and are predominantly used in open-cut mining
applications.
In certain instances, shovels can be used for loading coal if the seam is thick enough;
however they are economically efficient. Modern shovels travel on tracks and have
the ability to rotate the upper half of the machine in all direction from a stationary
position. They generally obtain a higher stripping rate than excavators and are
therefore used for large excavation operations.
Tonnage Factor
The tonnage factor provides the mechanism for the conversion from volume of ore to weight
of ore.
In the English system, the tonnage factor is normally expressed as cubic feet per ton of ore.
In the metric system, the tonnage factor is the specific gravity of the ore.
Difference b/w Long Ton & Short Ton
The difference between Long and short is the conversion factor.
long ton is an old school imperial measurement that is equivalent to 2240
pounds or 1.016 metric tonnes. A long ton can also be called an imperial ton,
a weight ton or displacement ton which is mainly used in shipping term.
Short ton = 0.907 tonnes so this means that a us ton is lighter than a metric
tonne. In other words one tonne is 2204.6 lbs so it’s over 200lbs heaver thana
US ton.
 1 tonne is standard worldwide metric weight forn1000kgs(kilogram)
 1 ton is the word predominately used in the Us and equals 2000lbs
(approx. 907 kg). Short and long ton are rarely used anymore.
Equipment selection
The choice of which mining method to used at a mine site is often dictated by
what machinery is available or what experience the mine management can offer.
Mining equipment are selected base on several factors, the most important
factors for equipment selection of opencast mining may be identified at site or
deposit parameters, adaptability to change, organizational culture, production
performance, mine/machinery life, delivery lead time, financial consideration and
many others.
Why do we study mine machinery?
We study mine machinery to enable us secures the production needs of a
mine as well as minimizes costs of production.
