Introduction
• The National Policy on Education (NPE, 1986) proposed the National
Curriculum Framework as a means of evolving a national system of
education, recommending a core component derived from the vision
of national development enshrined in the Constitution. In this policy
Protection of the Environment is included as core component of
national curriculum.
• Unfortunately curriculum integration is not transformed into
pedagogical integration.
• Most of our people believe they know more about the environment
than they actually do.
Education can transform our young minds for
harmonious living with biodiversity and sustainable
development
What Is Environmental Literacy?
“Environmental Literacy An individual's understanding, skills and
motivation to make responsible decisions that considers his or her
relationships to natural systems, communities and future generations”.

2. Gurudeo Rabindranath Tagore's philosophy of education
3. Gandhian view of education
Tagore’s essay, Civilisation and Progress, in which
the poet reminds us that a ‘creative spirit’ and
‘generous joy’ are key in childhood, both of which
can be distorted by an unthinking adult world.

Introduction • The National Policy on Education (NPE, 1986) proposed the National Curriculum Framework as a means of evolving a national system of education, recommending a core component derived from the vision of national development enshrined in the Constitution. In this policy Protection of the Environment is included as core component of national curriculum. • Unfortunately curriculum integration is not transformed into pedagogical integration. • Most of our people believe they know more about the environment than they actually do.

  • 6. What Is Environmental Literacy? “Environmental Literacy An individual's understanding, skills and motivation to make responsible decisions that considers his or her relationships to natural systems, communities and future generations”. -Oregon Environmental Literacy Program

Environmental literacy • Competencies Attitude Skills Knowledge Literacy Attitude: • Trusteeship • Friendly with environment • Full of love and harmony with environment • Grateful to environment Skills: • Skills for critical thinking • Creative and strategic problem solving • Decision-making Knowledge: • Sound scientific information of environmental elements and systems • Understanding of ownself as part of environment • Knowledge of natural resources and its status • Knowledge of environmental conflicts and issues

Abilities • To observe, listen, feel and decode environmental signs and make the appropriate meaning from them. • To live with nature with harmony • To do conscious interaction with environment • To analyze and evaluate our decisions and actions, with scientific consideration of environmental reactions. • To resolve environmental conflict and issues • To invent sustainable substitutes for natural resources
