The Primal Place is a book written by Robert Finch about his experiences, thoughts, and feelings
regarding Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The book s 241 pages are divided into 2 large Parts ;
Digging In and Going Out . Within these Parts , there are thirteen chapters. Chapters one through
six are contained in Digging In and chapters seven through thirteen are contained in Going Out .
Each chapter is divided into numerical sections to further organize Finch s thoughts. These various

Personal Response Overall, I enjoyed The Primal Place by Robert Finch. It was probably the book
I enjoyed the most from our nature writing unit. I think he managed to describe nature well and
thoroughly without dragging on for too long. He also seemed less radical than Dillard, Ehlrich,
and Thoreau, which made him more relatable. Also, the topics of his writing are more varied. He
discusses the ecology and history of Cape Cod and relates them well to the present. I could see lots
of Thoreau influence in the book, mainly in the chapter structure. Both Thoreau and Finch often
begin a chapter with smaller observations and extend them to more profound

One of the most prominent symbols I noticed, is actually a character: Angel. Angel is characterized

example is Penelope s story. She spends years being alone awaiting her husbands return after the
trojan war. She is a great wife, a great mother, she is also very wise and intelligent. Most of all her
greatest quality is that she is very faithful. Despite many people wanting to marry her and many
telling her that her husband s dead she still remains loyal to Odysseus. Although Odysseus has a
loyal wife he views women as sluts and men as noble. In order for a man to be considered a good,
heroic and strong, men is to have sex with lots of women but if a woman has sex with a lot of
men she is a slut and horrible. Medusa is a great representation as a monstrous woman in The
Odyssey. In order for men to have sex with a lot of women, a lot of women have to have sex with
men. So in order for men to reach manliness women have to fail at womanliness. I think that Homer
