To meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, WSU launched the Team Mentoring Program (TMP) in 2007 to increase participation, persistence, achievement, and graduation of underrepresented minority students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students are connected to a multifaceted support system that includes upper-level students, faculty members, and program staff. TMP offers activities intended to strengthen connection to colleges; facilitate student success; increase STEM retention and graduation rates; and direct the student toward graduate / professional schools or leadership in the workforce. The comprehensive mentoring strategy has several focused tracks that, together, address many of the challenges that may cause attrition. These tracks include academic support; internship resources and professional development; undergraduate research opportunities; cultural understanding; and community-building. Scholarship support provided by the University and by corporate donors including AT&T and Boeing enable these activities.

Over the past few years, web-applications have started to play an increasingly important role in our lives. We expect them to be always available and the data to be always fresh. This shift into the realm of real-time data processing is now transitioning to physical devices, and Gartner predicts that the Internet of Things will grow to an installed base of 26 billion units by 2020.
As reactive architectures gain in popularity, more and more developers find themselves faced with the challenge of "thinking reactive". To leave behind the well-known concepts of mutable, object-oriented, imperative and synchronous programming in favour of immutable, functional, declarative and asynchronous programming requires quite a mind shift and it isn't obvious to take the plunge.
In this talk we will explore three concepts from the world of functional programming that are at the core of building reactive applications: immutability, higher-order functions and manipulating immutable collections. We will first see how the "traditional" mutable, object-oriented approach of doing things can be problematic when it comes to multi-core programming, and then how to apply them to asynchronous systems.

We are at a unique point in the history of managing higher education campuses. Two historic waves of building construction, 1955-1975, and 1995-2010 are increasing demands for capital investments at a time when resources available are limited. Traditional strategies for funding deferred maintenance (DM) will not work in the future. There is just too much backlog to be addressed at the time life cycles of newer buildings are coming due.
Facilities leaders know that there is a cost of waiting to fund DM projects: higher capital costs, program disruption and higher operational costs. But making the case to senior management for funding facilities sooner rather than later is a challenge as they try to balance funding facilities vs. funding faculty salaries and increase student financial aid.
In this session, participants learn from facilities leaders from California public and private campuses who have worked with Sightlines to package the DM needs into investment portfolios and successfully make the case for funding.
