There are four main types of behavior measurement: frequency/event recording which counts behaviors, duration recording which tracks time spent in behaviors, interval recording which estimates behaviors over time intervals, and time sampling which observes behaviors at specific times. These methods are used to systematically collect data on behaviors and determine how often, long, or what percentage of time behaviors occur.

There are 4 types on how one can
measure behavior. These are:
a. Frequency/event recording
b.Duration recording
c. Interval recording
d. Time sampling

4. Frequency/event recording
• a simple counting of how many
times a specific behavior occurs
during a designated period of time
• useful with behaviors that are
discreet and short in duration
• direct observation approach that
is utilized to determine the
frequency of a behavior that is
targeted

5. Duration recording
• monitor the percentage of time
that a behavior occurs during the
observation period
• utilized in systematic fashion to
know how long a person engages in
behavior

6. Interval recording
• a collection of information that is
used when uninterrupted behavior
wants to be calculated
• used to estimate the length of time
engaged in a behavior or instances of
a behavior
– two types of interval recording
• whole interval recording
• partial interval recording

7. Time sampling
• an intermittent way of recording
behavior by observing the subject
at certain pre-specified times
• involves observing a child for an
extended period such as a whole
morning/afternoon session, or even
a whole day
