Introduction to the Digital Liberal Arts

What are the liberal arts?
The College of Arts and Sciences
The term liberal arts denotes a curriculum that
imparts general knowledge and develops the
student’s rational thought and intellectual
capabilities, unlike the professional, vocational,
and technical curricula emphasizing
specialization.
… In classical antiquity, the liberal arts denoted
the education proper to a free man (Latin: liber,
“free”), unlike the education proper to a slave

Are the sciences rational?
• The liberal arts refers to a curriculum, not a
  subject, nor even a classification of subjects
• A liberal arts education is one in which the
  humanities plays a central role
• The humanities are primarily concerned with
  the human dimensions of historyand
  language
The humanities also emphasize …
• Critical thinking
  – Understanding why (vs. explaining how)
• Historical awareness
  – How did we get here? Has this happened before?
• Extended arguments
  – Following and producing
  – Books!
• Ability to think on one’s feet
  – Coherent sentences!
These are all practical skills
The Seven Liberal Arts

• All critical thinking requires historical
  consciousness
• All history is known through media
• All media require interpretation
• All interpretation requires fluency

 technologies are both objects of
humanistic inquiry and vehicles of
            knowledge
This course studies, from a liberal
arts perspective, how scholars in the
      liberal arts use technology

Highlights
• Blogging
   – Comment on readings before class (by 5pm Monday)
   – Blog synthetic posts after class (before studio)
   – Comment on two others’ posts (by Friday)
• Projects
   – Build a thematic research collection using WordPress
   – Collect content and present an argument using new media
• Studio
   – First and second half
   – Goal is to build skills
   – Subject to some modifications  new for the liberal arts

  • 7. • The liberal arts refers to a curriculum, not a subject, nor even a classification of subjects • A liberal arts education is one in which the humanities plays a central role • The humanities are primarily concerned with the human dimensions of historyand language

  • 12. The digital liberal arts refers to a curriculum in which digital technologies are both objects of humanistic inquiry and vehicles of knowledge
  • 13. This course studies, from a liberal arts perspective, how scholars in the liberal arts use technology

Highlights • Blogging – Comment on readings before class (by 5pm Monday) – Blog synthetic posts after class (before studio) – Comment on two others’ posts (by Friday) • Projects – Build a thematic research collection using WordPress – Collect content and present an argument using new media • Studio – First and second half – Goal is to build skills – Subject to some modifications  new for the liberal arts
