WHAT ARE CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES?
• Activities that enable to
supplement and complement
the curricular or main syllabi
activities.
• These are the very important
part and parcel of educational
institutions to develop the
students’ personality as well as
to strengthen the classroom
learning.
Importance and Benefits of
Co-Curricular Activities
• Co-curricular activities stimulate playing, acting, singing, recitation,
speaking and narrating in students.
• Activities like participation in game debates, music, drama, etc., help in
achieving overall functioning of education.
• It enables the students to express themselves freely through debates.
• Games and Sports helps students to be fit and energetic.
• It helps to develop the spirit of healthy competition.
• It Guide students how to organize and present an activity, how to
develop skills, how to co-operate and co-ordinate in different situations
and develop leadership qualities.
• It provide the avenues of socialization, self-identification and self-
assessment
• It provide motivation for learning.
• It develop the values.
Co-curricular Activities in Mathematics
• Mathematics is considered a dry
subject by common people. It is
partially true because students
scarcely find any recreational
material in study of
Mathematics for supplementing
the teaching of Mathematics in
classroom.

Need and Importance of a Mathematics Club
• Mathematics club can be a good medium for developing students
interest.
• It may be suitable forum for organising various Mathematical activities.
• It is helpful in proper utilisation of leisure time of the students.
• It encourages a positive attitude towards Mathematics.
• It can supplement classroom teaching & simulates curiosity.
• It promotes cross-curricular thinking and the holistic development of
pupils.
• It developa a healthy interest in Mathematics as a source of interest and
achievement.
• It inspires thinking, challenge and collaboration.
• It may be a good medium of exchange of Mathematical information,
experiences, experiments and innovation.
Maths Laboratory • The Mathematics laboratory
is a place where anybody
can experiment and explore
patterns and ideas.
• It is a place where one can
find a collection of games,
puzzles, and other teaching
and learning material.
• The materials are meant to
be used both by the
students on their own and
with their teacher to explore
the world of mathematics,
to discover, to learn and to
develop an interest in
mathematics.

OFMATHEMATICS LABORATORY
• It provides an opportunity to understand and internalize the
basic mathematical concepts through concrete objects and
situations.
• It enables the students to verify or discover several
geometrical properties and facts using models or by paper
cutting and folding technique.
• It helps the students to build interest and confidence in
learning the subject.

• The laboratory provides opportunity to exhibit the relatedness of
mathematical concepts with every day life.
• It provides greater scope for individual participation in the process of
learning and becoming autonomous learners.
• It provides scope for greater involvement of both the mind and the hand
which facilitate cognition.
• The laboratory allows and encourages students to think.
• It enables the teacher to demonstrate, explain and reinforce abstract
mathematical ideas by using concrete objects, models, charts, graphs,
pictures, posters etc

Maths Co-curricular Activities : Mathematics Laboratory

  • 1. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN MATHEMATICS : MATHS LABORATORY -Dr. Roma Smart Joseph Teacher Educator Lucknow (UP) India
  • 2. WHAT ARE CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES? • Activities that enable to supplement and complement the curricular or main syllabi activities. • These are the very important part and parcel of educational institutions to develop the students’ personality as well as to strengthen the classroom learning.
  • 3. Importance and Benefits of Co-Curricular Activities • Co-curricular activities stimulate playing, acting, singing, recitation, speaking and narrating in students. • Activities like participation in game debates, music, drama, etc., help in achieving overall functioning of education. • It enables the students to express themselves freely through debates. • Games and Sports helps students to be fit and energetic. • It helps to develop the spirit of healthy competition. • It Guide students how to organize and present an activity, how to develop skills, how to co-operate and co-ordinate in different situations and develop leadership qualities. • It provide the avenues of socialization, self-identification and self- assessment • It provide motivation for learning. • It develop the values.
  • 4. Co-curricular Activities in Mathematics • Mathematics is considered a dry subject by common people. It is partially true because students scarcely find any recreational material in study of Mathematics for supplementing the teaching of Mathematics in classroom. • To arouse interest and knowledge of students, a number of co-curricular activities can be organised.
  • 5. Maintaining Interest in Mathematics • Intellectual Activities • Motivation • Multi-sensory Aids and Devices • Knowledge of Practical Utility • Correlation with Other Field of study • Vocational Values • Practical work
  • 6. Mathematics Clubs • Maths clubs breathe new life into Maths beyond the classroom. • They focus on two things: having fun with maths and learning.
  • 7. Need and Importance of a Mathematics Club • Mathematics club can be a good medium for developing students interest. • It may be suitable forum for organising various Mathematical activities. • It is helpful in proper utilisation of leisure time of the students. • It encourages a positive attitude towards Mathematics. • It can supplement classroom teaching & simulates curiosity. • It promotes cross-curricular thinking and the holistic development of pupils. • It developa a healthy interest in Mathematics as a source of interest and achievement. • It inspires thinking, challenge and collaboration. • It may be a good medium of exchange of Mathematical information, experiences, experiments and innovation.
  • 8. Maths Laboratory • The Mathematics laboratory is a place where anybody can experiment and explore patterns and ideas. • It is a place where one can find a collection of games, puzzles, and other teaching and learning material. • The materials are meant to be used both by the students on their own and with their teacher to explore the world of mathematics, to discover, to learn and to develop an interest in mathematics. • The activities create interest among students.

  • 10. NEED AND IMPORTANCE OFMATHEMATICS LABORATORY • It provides an opportunity to understand and internalize the basic mathematical concepts through concrete objects and situations. • It enables the students to verify or discover several geometrical properties and facts using models or by paper cutting and folding technique. • It helps the students to build interest and confidence in learning the subject.
  • 11. NEED AND IMPORTANCE OFMATHEMATICS LABORATORY • The laboratory provides opportunity to exhibit the relatedness of mathematical concepts with every day life. • It provides greater scope for individual participation in the process of learning and becoming autonomous learners. • It provides scope for greater involvement of both the mind and the hand which facilitate cognition. • The laboratory allows and encourages students to think. • It enables the teacher to demonstrate, explain and reinforce abstract mathematical ideas by using concrete objects, models, charts, graphs, pictures, posters etc
  • 12. THE OBJECTIVES OF MATHEMATICS LABORATORY • Develop an attitude of enquiry. • Remove the weakness of present day Mathematics education. • Generate interest in the subject. • Make the children look for pattern and ask questions
  • 13. Design and General Layout • A laboratory is equipped with instruments, apparatus, equipments and models apart from facilities like water, electricity etc.
