2. Mathematics competition is a
wonderful way of connecting
your students to a larger
community of mathematical
thinkers.
In a collaborative competitive
community, students work together to
solve problems, not so they can be
better than their team mates, rather, so
all of them can improve and celebrate
each other's progress.
3. The mathematics competition community
is a kind and supportive group where
students and teachers, alike enjoy
discussing problems.
There are numerous competitions with
various styles, structures and goals,
however, the one common goal is that
they are created by mathematicians who
want to excite and engage students in
the joys of solving interesting problems.
4. How Do We Effectively Groom Our
Students for National and International
Competitions?
• First, let me say that you have smart,
brilliant and promising students.
• What makes students to win in
competitions is the Winning Edge.
5. What is the Winning Edge?
• The Winning Edge is KNOW/L/EDGE.
• Knowing what others don't know.
• It is a function of passionate investment of
quality time into acquiring and imparting relevant
knowledge.
• Winning in competitions is also a function of
loosing and loosing without loosing enthusiasm.
When you lose, learn.
6. In grooming our students, the following will be
considered:
THE MAN
• The Maths teacher grooms his students with
deep passion.
• He seeks to continually sharpen his
knowledge and teaching skills.
7. • He goes to the class with fresh ideas.
• His students develop daily because
himself develops daily.
• This day, commit yourself to daily
improvement and you will have a
compound interest of Self- Improvement.
8. THE MATERIALS
• Materials Make Men. The Maths teacher
consistently acquires materials that will
make him a better teacher.
• To be a great teacher and to raise
champions in competitions, you must
consistently invest in yourself.
9. • The only way to invest in your self is to
buy and study great books.
• Your teaching must not interfere with your
learning new things every day.
• To invest in your students, expose them to
great ideas from great books or expose
them to great books with great ideas.
10. THE METHODS
• Be Selective to be Effective:
The selection must be based on
performance and perspiration.
• Catch them Young
• Be systematic to be productive: Have a
practicable system for grooming your
students in terms of time and place.
11. • Start now, start SMALL, but THINK BIG
• Go from what is known to the unknown
• Be consistent to be competent
• Investigate Before You Invest:
This means you enquire and acquire what
is required in terms of Syllabus,
Curriculum, Past questions etc
12. • Make use of the 80/20 principle:
Give 80% of your time and effort to the top
20% of your students.
• Inspect What You Expect
• Strategize and Energize
• Adopt the Problem-Solving
Approach
13. • For our students to win in competitions, we
need to groom them to become students
who can do more than solving mere
exercises for grades; students who can
tackle difficult problems and notice
problems worthy of solving by seeking
patterns, reframing information and asking
the right questions.
14. • We can achieve this by adopting the Problem-
Based Learning approach which emphasizes
collaborating over interesting and relevant
problems.
• For our students to experience improved
problem solving skills, growth of curiosity, and
joy of problem solving and ultimately win in
competitions they must be immersed in a
kind, collaborative and challenging
environment.
15. • We need to train them to think,
work together or find challenging
opportunities.
16. THE MOTIVATION
• Our Students must be consistently INSPIRED and FIRED
UP or else they will become EXPIRED and TIRED.
• In summary, one great book l will recommend for your
students is FOUNDATION MATHEMATICS for
National and International Secondary School
Examination(SSS 1-3, WAEC, NECO, NATEB, GCE,
JAMB/UTME, GMAT, CBSE, IGSCE, OLYMPIAD MATHS
COMPETITIONS, AMERICAN MATHEMATICS. etc)
Authored by Ajewole S.J; Forward by Professor A.R.T. Solarin
17. • This book is well researched and comprehensive
work garnished with many tricky methods that
increase the speed and accuracy while solving
mathematical problems.
• It is an invaluable asset to students who want to
excel both in national and international
examinations.
• Expose your students to this book and watch
them become maths geniuses.
