2. STATS THAT CALL FOR ACTION
1. 49% of Africans or 420 million live under the
poverty line of $1.25 per day (2014);
2. Those living in poverty will rise to 550 million by
2025 if we do nothing;
3. 33% of African children live in chronic hunger; 58
million children in Africa are stunted (under 5
years);
4. Net food import bill of USD 35.4 billion per
annum (2015);
5. Net Imports projected to increase to USD 111.0
billion by 2025 if we do nothing

 The continental target for
bringing down
undernourishment to 5% or
less, by the year 2025 has
not been met.
 Of the 32 countries (out of
55) that reported on
undernourishment, 9
showed significant progress:
Egypt, Ghana, Lesotho,
Mali, Mauritania, Morocco,
Niger, Senegal and Togo.

7. ZINC ADEQUACY
 Key observations: Zinc deficiency is mainly located in Garissa, Wajr and Mandera
o In these same counties, markets are also undersupplied with zinc
o Food losses are located in Narok, Nyandarua, Makueni and counties in and around Trans Nzoia
o Production is less deficient compared to calcium and iron, but should further increase

8. FOLATE ADEQUACY
 Key observations: Folate is the least problematic micronutrient deficiency, yet still present in NE
o Demand constraints still apply, especially in the center with opportunities to supply the NE
o Food losses are again located in a region bordering Uganda, or inter-regional trade to the north
o National production of folate is not deficient, yet there are regional deficiencies
