Consider the following hypothetical counties, knowing that the white color points to adequacy, red points to deficiency; and green to surplus.
A Post-harvest losses (increase storage and conservation capacities; improve price knowledge; improve intra-regional transport infrastructure)
B Production problems (remove constraints)
C Production problems, but with inter-regional market opportunities (improve regional market integration)
D Demand problems (improve income generating capacities/strengthen livelihoods; or increase unawareness of nutritional value of certain crops)
First three columns provide the aggregate daily production and consumption per AME relative to what is recommended. Then, the ratio of 1&3 (NPA), 2&3 (NCA). And the last column is HCA.
People do not reason in nutrients but in food stuff; necessary to make the re-conversion.
For calcium, focus on sesame production, processing (like Uganda)
For iron, millet, cowpeas and wheat might be good alternatives
Looking at which food items are responsible for the current, and economically viable alternatives.
For folate, not a problem of production/market availability, but mainly a demand issue. Here we see that folate is mainly provided by vegetables (cheap, no affordability problem), so issue of raising awareness focused on eating MORE of these (because these are the cheapest option)
For vitamin A, more-or-less same issue as with folate. No cheaper alternative; people should simply eat more of these
