15 September 2021. In 2013, FAO launched the “Voices of the Hungry” project, establishing a new globally valid tool called the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). The latter provides an approach for measuring the severity of people’s food insecurity condition by looking at their own experiences, allowing to hear the voices of the people who struggle daily to have access to safe and nutritious food.
The objective of this RUFORUM webinar was to introduce FIES as a tool for measuring food insecurity at different levels and raise awareness among the participants on FAO’s work linked to food security data and the SDGs.

Food is life and the global food sustainability is essential to human being survival. The global food system is highly
complex and is driven by various factors including environment, cultural, social and economic drive. It is vital to understand
these drivers and their interaction in order to help to improve the public food sustainability policies. Global polices and projects
desperately required in order improving the global food sustainability. Food sustainability is one of the unsolved global issues
and great commitment is required starting from global policy makers, national governments, and every individual home. This
research paper includes analysis and study of various elements such as global change science, policy, food crisis, factor affecting
and challenging food security, data on status and future projection and potential ways of solving problems. The goal of food
sustainability is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and have a reasonable quality of life without
compromising the quality of life of future generations. Agriculture sustainability is the best solution which can feed the world
without compromising the environment or threatening human health. Scientific evidence that global environment has changed
is overwhelming and indisputable. These phenomena have a direct impact on agriculture which in turn affects food
sustainability. The food price is always toward upward trend which is validated by the periodic average global food price
monitoring report released by the Food and agricultural organizations. The factors affecting and challenging the food security
are many including increased food consumption due to population increase, uneven distribution, changes in living styles, limited
resources, environmental problems, economic problems and others. The potential ways to solve food sustainability need to be
established and implemented effectively across the world.

African countries have diversified both their exports and trade partners over the last decade, African agricultural trade still suffers from structural problems as well as exogenous shocks. Against this backdrop, the 2021 Africa Agriculture Trade Monitor (AATM) analyzes continental and regional trends in African agricultural trade flows and policies. The report finds that many African countries continue to enjoy the most success in global markets with cash crops and niche products. At the intra-African level, countries are becoming more interconnected in trade of key commodities, but there remain many potential but unexploited trade relationships. The report examines the livestock sector in detail, finding that despite its important role in Africa, the sector is concentrated in low value- added products that are informally traded. The report also examines trade integration in the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), which remains limited due to factors including tariffs, nontariff measures, poor transport infrastructure, and weak institutions. Finally, the report discusses the implications of two major events affecting African trade in 2020 and 2021: the COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

This presentation, created by Syed Faiz ul Hassan, explores the profound influence of media on public perception and behavior. It delves into the evolution of media from oral traditions to modern digital and social media platforms. Key topics include the role of media in information propagation, socialization, crisis awareness, globalization, and education. The presentation also examines media influence through agenda setting, propaganda, and manipulative techniques used by advertisers and marketers. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of surveillance enabled by media technologies on personal behavior and preferences. Through this comprehensive overview, the presentation aims to shed light on how media shapes collective consciousness and public opinion.

Economic Development and Nutrition Transition in Ghana
1. Economic Development and
Nutrition Transition in Ghana
Taking Stock of Food Consumption Patterns and Trends
(ReSAKSS ATOR, Ch. 4)
Olivier Ecker (IFPRI)
2. Ghana’s high economic growth in the 1990s and 2000s contributed
to rapid reduction of extreme poverty and hunger.
Economic growth and transformation usually entail a “nutrition
transition” (i.e. changing dietary patterns and nutritional
outcomes), giving rise to new nutritional problems such as
overweight/obesity and related NCDs.
As overnutrition increases faster than declines in undernutrition
(incl. micronutrient deficiencies), many middle-income countries
have experienced a “double-burden of malnutrition.”
These new nutritional realities constitute challenges to national
policies (incl. public health, social protection, agriculture).
Background
3. What is the current state of
the nutrition transition in
Ghana?
4. Three steps:
1. Long-term, national trends in development and food supply indicators
2. Regional household food consumption patterns and changes in recent
years
3. Estimation of Engel curves
Focus on the consumption of protein-rich foods, because:
• Animal-source food consumption is a good indicator of the nutrition
transition,
• Consumption of foods rich in high-quality protein (of vegetal and
animal origins) is associated with improved nutritional outcomes,
• Overconsumption of animal-source foods is linked to
overweight/obesity and higher risk of NCDs.

7. Findings from estimation results:
In Southern Ghana (urban & rural), income growth is associated with
diversification of food consumption toward more high-quality protein
foods of both animal and vegetal origins and more vegetables and fruits,
and less staple foods.
In Northern Ghana (urban & rural), income growth is associated with
shifts toward more animal-source food (ASF) consumption, with little
diversification toward other nutritious food groups.
Consumption levels of ASFs tend to increase linearly with rising incomes
and at much higher rates than those of other food groups in Southern
Ghana (urban & rural), while the consumption levels of ASFs and cereals
tend to increase at similarly high rates similar in Northern Ghana (urban
& rural).
Engel Curves & Food
Consumption Elasticities
8. There is no evidence for a nutrition transition over the past
decades.
Ghana is rather about to face a rapid nutrition transition and
increasing double burden of malnutrition.
There are marked regional differences within Ghana.
It is timely to review existing food security and social protection
policies and to reform those that have become ineffective and may
have adverse nutritional effects in the near future.
More rigorous research is needed that helps to design policies and
large-scale programs that effectively reduce undernutrition and
the risk of overnutrition at the same time.
