Magnetic disks store data on magnetic platters that are spun by a spindle. A read/write head moves across the platters via an actuator to write data by magnetizing patterns on the surface and read data by detecting the magnetic polarity of patterns. The head, actuator, and ribbon cable connecting the disk to the motherboard work together to allow the disk to write electronic pulses as magnetic patterns and read those patterns as electrical currents.
