Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) is a treatment for patients with severe emphysema that aims to improve respiratory function by removing diseased lung tissue. The National Emphysema Treatment Trial indicated that LVRS benefits primarily patients with upper-lobe emphysema and low exercise capacity, showing improvements in survival, lung function, and quality of life. While LVRS has associated risks, including mortality and morbidity, it can delay the need for lung transplantation significantly.
