Chapter 9 Cells As The Basic
Units Of Life
9.1 What are living things made of?
9.2 What are the different types of cells
and their functions?
2© Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd
Objectives
 State that all living things are made of
cells, which are the basic units of life
 Recognise that genes are found within
the nucleus of a cell that control the
traits of humans that are passed from
parents to children
 Label the parts of a typical animal cell
(cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus)
on a drawing

What are cells?
 Our body is made
up of cells.
 Each cell is a basic
unit of our body.
 All living things are
made up of cells.
 The cell is the basic
unit of life.

The Microscope
 Cells are very
tiny.
 We cannot see
them without a
microscope.
 A microscope
uses lenses to
make objects
look bigger.

Parts of an Animal Cell
 An animal cell has three parts: the cell
membrane, the cytoplasm and the
nucleus.

What determines our traits?
 Characteristics
(traits) are passed
down from parents
to their children.
 This process is
known as heredity.
 Genes found in the
nucleus of cells.

Cells Working Together in the Body
 The different types
of cells in our bodies
differ in their shape,
size and what they
do.
 Each type of cell
carries out a specific
function in the body.
 This allows our body
to function
efficiently.

Although different cells in our body carry out
different functions, they need to work together to
help our body work efficiently.

Bone Cells
 A bone cell is a specialised cell. It has a specific
function, that is to make bones that support our
body.
 A bone cell, like most animal cells, has a
nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane.

Bone Cells
 Bone cells contain a lot of calcium
and phosphates that help to keep our
bones healthy, strong and solid.
 As we grow old, these chemicals are
lost from our bones and our bones
become weaker.

Red Blood Cells
 Blood is an important tissue of our
body as it carries nutrients to and
removes waste materials from cells.
 Blood contains different types of
cells.
 One important type of cell is the red
blood cell.
© Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 16
Red Blood Cells
 Red blood cells transport
oxygen from the lungs to
the rest of the body.
 Red blood cells do not
have a nucleus because
they need to carry more
oxygen.
 They contain a red
pigment called
haemoglobin which binds
to oxygen and carry it
around the body.

Muscle Cells
 The muscle cell is
another
specialised cell.
 It has a cell
membrane,
nucleus and
cytoplasm.
 Muscle cells
contract and relax
to help us move.

  • 3. Objectives  State that all living things are made of cells, which are the basic units of life  Recognise that genes are found within the nucleus of a cell that control the traits of humans that are passed from parents to children  Label the parts of a typical animal cell (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus) on a drawing 3© Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd
  • 4. What are cells?  Our body is made up of cells.  Each cell is a basic unit of our body.  All living things are made up of cells.  The cell is the basic unit of life. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 4
  • 5. The Microscope  Cells are very tiny.  We cannot see them without a microscope.  A microscope uses lenses to make objects look bigger. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 5 Activity Book Link Activity 9.1 Using a Microscope
  • 6. Parts of an Animal Cell  An animal cell has three parts: the cell membrane, the cytoplasm and the nucleus. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 6
  • 7. Cell parts and their functions © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 7
  • 8. Cell parts and their functions © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 8 Activity Book Link Activity 9.2 Structure of a Cell
  • 9. What determines our traits?  Characteristics (traits) are passed down from parents to their children.  This process is known as heredity.  Genes found in the nucleus of cells. carry information that determines our characteristics. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 9 traits that are inherited Activity Book Link Activity 9.3 Cells and Cell Structure Activity 9.4 Observing Human Traits

Objectives  State that all living things are made of cells, which are the basic units of life  Recognise that genes are found within the nucleus of a cell that control the traits of humans that are passed from parents to children  Label the parts of a typical animal cell (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus) on a drawing 11© Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd
  • 12. Cells Working Together in the Body  The different types of cells in our bodies differ in their shape, size and what they do.  Each type of cell carries out a specific function in the body.  This allows our body to function efficiently. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 12
  • 13. Although different cells in our body carry out different functions, they need to work together to help our body work efficiently. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 13 Activity Book Link Activity 9.5 How Our Body Works Activity 9.6 Different Types of Cells in Our Body Doing Specialised Work
  • 14. Bone Cells  A bone cell is a specialised cell. It has a specific function, that is to make bones that support our body.  A bone cell, like most animal cells, has a nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 14
  • 15. Bone Cells  Bone cells contain a lot of calcium and phosphates that help to keep our bones healthy, strong and solid.  As we grow old, these chemicals are lost from our bones and our bones become weaker. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 15
  • 16. Red Blood Cells  Blood is an important tissue of our body as it carries nutrients to and removes waste materials from cells.  Blood contains different types of cells.  One important type of cell is the red blood cell. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 16
  • 17. Red Blood Cells  Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.  Red blood cells do not have a nucleus because they need to carry more oxygen.  They contain a red pigment called haemoglobin which binds to oxygen and carry it around the body. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 17 red blood cells
  • 18. Muscle Cells  The muscle cell is another specialised cell.  It has a cell membrane, nucleus and cytoplasm.  Muscle cells contract and relax to help us move. © Copyright Star Publishing Pte Ltd 18 muscle cells make up muscle tissue.
