2.  We need food to grow , be healthy and have
energy. The food we eat is broken down in our
digestive system. The chemicals from the food are
transported around the body by the bloodstream.
The chemicals that make up our food can be
grouped into seven types. A balanced diet contains
the right amount of all seven types.

3.  Magazines and newspapers are full of diets.
Some diets are sensible , others could be
dangerous. Most people think that the easiest
way to lose weight is to go on a diet. This is
not always the best way to do it. Scientists
have shown that nine times out of ten ,
weight lost during dieting is put back on at a
later date.

4.  It can take 24 hours for the food to pass
through your body. On its journey it is broken
down. Useful chemicals are absorbed into the
blood around the body. Anything that we eat
that our body doesn’t need right away is
either stored or excreted as waste.

5.  What happens when we eat food???
 STAGE 1- First we break up food by chewing
it.
 STAGE 2- Then we swallow our food and it
passes down the esophagus or gullet.
 STAGE 3- The food is now in the stomach.
 STAGE 4- In the small intestine , bile from the
liver stops that fat clumping together.
 STAGE 5- When it reaches the large intestine
all the useful parts of the food have been
absorbed.

6.  A balanced diet means that we should eat the same amount of
food. These are some of the things which we should eat in a
balanced diet:
o Bread
o Potatoes
o Rice
o Pasta
o Meat
o Fish
o Oils
o Butter
o Cheese
o Salt
o Yeast
