LONE STAR CONFERENCE BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE
April 10, 2018
LSC BASEBALL
West Texas A&M is a perfect 8-0 to start Lone Star Conference play and tops the standings with a nine-game winning
streak.
This week’s schedule includes non-conference play along with league contests on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
LSC teams are playing a 10-week schedule with a four-game series against every other team during weeks 8-14
determining the LSC Champion. Conference series scheduled weeks 5-7 will not count toward the league standings.
Each four-game series shall consist of a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and 9-inning contest Sunday.
The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games,
while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the
league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason. This season, the top six teams play a single-elimination
championship on May 10-11-12, at the No. 1 seed.
LSC baseball teams are 136-103 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the teams are currently 10-
13 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 16-4 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Jared McCarver, Tarleton State University, shined offensively and defensively for the Texans, leading Tarleton to a
four-game sweep of Eastern New Mexico and sole possession of second place in the Lone Star Conference standings.
McCarver got his weekend rolling with a four-RBI performance in Friday's series opener as he went 2-5 with a one
scored and four RBI. For the week, he hit .462 in 13 at bats with six hits, two runs scored, and a team-high seven RBI on a
.692 slugging percentage. He also worked a flawless right field, but his biggest play of the weekend saved a win for
Tarleton in game two of the series. With Tarleton clinging to a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh, Eastern New Mexico
loaded the bases with one out and put a shot to the right-center gap but McCarver saved the game for the Texans with a
full-extension, diving play to make the out and then double off the runner at first base to get Tarleton out of the jam.
The Texans went on to win the game by the same 5-4 score.
Zach Shank, Eastern New Mexico University, had a strong week for the Greyhounds at Tarleton State. With a .400
batting average, he was 230 points above the team average for the weekend. Shank also had a pair of doubles and a run
batted in.
Bradley Mathiowetz, Angelo State University, played in the field for the first time all season while continuing his
strong performance at the plate. He hit .385 with a team-leading five hits. He hit his team-leading 10th double and
homered for the third time this season. The Minnesota native also hit safely in all four games, pushing his hit streak to a
team-leading nine games.
Skyler Henderson, Cameron University, was dominant out of the bullpen for CU this past series against UT Permian
Basin, earning a win and a save in his two appearances. The senior submarine pitcher came in to the game in the
seventh inning of game one with Cameron up 3-2 and despite giving up a hit, struck out one and retired two others via
easy groundouts to earn the save. Henderson then pitched the final 2.1 innings in game three, striking out five batters
and giving up just two hits to earn his first win of the season.
Kellen Rholl, Angelo State University, made an impact out of the bullpen with two appearances in the series against
Texas A&M-Kingsville. He struck out three batters in his two appearances and notched his seventh save of the year while
giving up just one hit in 4.1 innings on the mound.
Eddie Avila, Tarleton State University, was a shutdown closer in every sense of the definition last week as the senior
right-hander pitched and earned saves in three straight games, lifting Tarleton to a four-game sweep of Eastern New
Mexico. Avila made his weekend debut on Saturday by coming in for a two-inning save in a 5-4 game. After shutting
down the Greyhounds in order in the eighth, Eastern New Mexico got the tying run on third with two away before Avila
got the Greyhound leadoff hitter swinging to end the game. He followed up by closing out both ends of Sunday's
doubleheader with 1.2 innings and two strikeouts in game one and then a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of punch outs in game
3. four to secure the 5-2 win. For the week, Avila boasted a 0.00 ERA in 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out
six. His three straight saves gives him eight on the season, which ties him for third-most in a single year in Tarleton
history, and 14 in his career, which ties him for the second-most all-time in Tarleton history.
Ivan Thomas, UT Permian Basin, picked up his first win of the season Tuesday, throwing a seven inning complete
game in an 11-2 win over Cameron. He allowed just three hits and walked six on the day, striking out one. It was his
second straight start with one run allowed and his third this season.
