2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

3. Objectives
What are the objectives for this project? The objective is to market and PR the band The
Gilded Six Bits and their new album release neat, plausible and wrong.
Who do you want to target? I want to target a younger audience 16-30. Who like alternative
indie rock, both male and females who like to go to gigs and music festivals.
How many records do you want to sell? 16,000 worldwide records
What would make this a successful exercise? This is going to be a successful exercise
because it has a clear aim. The aim is to market and PR the band and it is going to be achievable to do. As
it is achievable to do I can use this for practise for the future in the work place as what I want to go into
realistically I may be asked to do some PR work. This kind of project could actually happen when I go into
my profession and it will be successful as I already will have some practice. The effect will be measured by
how popular the band will get. The more popular the band gets the most you know what you are doing is
being effective towards that band. Monitoring factors like twitter follows, facebook likes, album sails. Is
something to measure the effect of the PR and marketing campaign. The time in which there is achievable
for the exercise. There is a time scale but completing this will not be a problem in the time scale and it will
still be successful.
3
4. Audience
Who is the audience for this band? The target audience for this band is 16-30 year old
people, both male and females as the group is made up of male and females. People who like to go to gigs
and music festivals and love to go to places like Camden and shop at urban outfitters. Males and Females
who love little music venues and quirky bars.
What age are they? 16-30
What do they look like? Quirky looking male and females, young, piercings, tattoos, beards,
winged eyeliner, bandannas, baggy clothes. Wear a lot of black and white. They wear a lot of Topshop
basics and urban outfitters. Boys will wear the same and ark.
The girls are into wearing cop tops and highwasited skirts.
The boys like to wear ripped jeans and checked shirts and
oversized jumpers.
Who else do they like? They are also into people like Grouplove, The Naked and Famous,
Hozier, Passion Pit, Catfish and the Bottleman.
4
5. Media
What media will you use and why? Be specific about the platforms you will
use.
Because I am targeting younger people the media platforms will be a lot more varied as there will be be
more platforms in which they will be on. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Sound cloud, YouTube. They will
have these platforms as most 16-30 year olds are on these types of social media sites where you can use
hash tags to promote words and get their name about. I will use broadcasting and
What magazines might they get in to?
The magazines that they get into are NME, Kerrang, BBC Music Magazine, Teen now, Teen Vogue. They
are shown in both music and fashion/style as the band together have really good fashion. The girls are
featured in magazines like Cosmo as they are strong female role models with really good makeup and
fashion.
What TV channels would they be on? They would appear at the end of chat shows like
Jonathan Ross and Graham Norton. This is when they are promoting new songs. Like they will do this
when they re promoting their new album. Then there will be on MTV and music channels. On MTV they will
been doing interviews and short presenting parts in-between shows. Then they would of be on mainstream
channels such as itv on programs such as the X factor singing in the results show. Be interview on Lorraine
and performing on Lorraine and Good Morning Britain.
Which radio stations would play their music? The radio in which they would mainly be
on is BBC radio 1 as they were founded by BBC radio 1 introducing. Some of the songs would be played
on radio stations like Rock Fm, heart, Capital and Kerrang as these are more mixtures on new and older
music.
5
6. Media
Who would they give interviews to? They would give in to a range of different interviews
from BBC radio 1 to Good morning Britain. They would be on MTV a lot promoting their new albums. The
main place they would be would be BBC radio 1 join in with radio shows such as call and delete and taking
over the radio in an afternoon. The will be on interviews such a Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr. Then do
YouTube interviews for internet spy and buzz feed.
6
7. Which forms of social media would you use and how would you use social
media? The social media that is going to be used is really varied as they have a younger
audience, more social media will be used. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, snapchat, YouTube and
sound cloud. I would use social media for the audience to interact with their fans and promote
upcoming events and new releases. They would use hash tags to do this and post pictures up
regularly to each of the social media sites. Pages will be made for fans to like and follow to keep up
with the band.
Be really specific here and plan the social media campaign. Consider the
different platforms available and how you would use them to reach your
audience. The social media campaign for the band would be very important is this is where they are going to
get most of their target audience. The broadcasting platform will promote them on social media as interviews they
can tell people to go and follow them and #TGSB. This hashtag they will use to promote themselves on Twitter &
Instagram. The twitter name will be @TGSB. This is a shorten named for them. This will allow their fans to tweet
them and involve them in posts that will be linked to them using this @ name and hashtag option. This hashtag
will be used on Instagram to promote the pictures that they upload and so fans can click on the hashtag and find
all the pictures that have everything to do with this band. It is a great way for them to promote an album cover. On
facebook and twitter they can carry out competitions to promote them releasing new albums. One competition that
they could carry out is free giveaways of their new album for three people if they retweet, favourite and follow their
account. This is encouraging people to follow them on social media and promoting their album. YouTube is
another vital social media site that they will be on and they will be constantly sharing their videos on there other
social media pages like facebook and twitter from YouTube. Sneak previews will be posted from there pages such
as pictures from backstage of music videos and new sneak peak album covers to get fans excited. Links will be
used in their Bio on Instagram/ twitter to their facebook page, YouTube channel, band website and sound cloud.
The target audience as there really keen on following bands they like this will prove as a positive thing to get them
their fans. The fans will be able to track what the bands are getting up to. Other bands that do these are
Grouplove. They are always posting about events they have played at and sharing their new upcoming albums.
v7
8. Merchandise
What merchandise would you use to promote this band? As this is in Indie band
the most popular kind of merchandise is a t-shirt and they will sell band t-shirts with different quotes from
their songs and a picture of the group. You will be able to get these t-shirts in different styles. Both male
and female. There is going to band wristbands which again come in different styles. Posters of the band
these will be the cheapest kind of merchandise they sell. They will sell apparel; hoodies, pullovers, bobble
hat, tank tops, vests. Then they will sell accessories; stickers, wristbands, badges, guitar pick, earrings,
vinyl's. As vinyl's are very popular with their target audience.
8
9. Manage the message
What is the message you want to communicate about this band?
The message that band is communicating is making people feel powerful. There all about friends and
being strong which is why they have albums such as powerful ones (2013). They are a mixed gender band
and this is to communicate the message of friendship between boys and girls.
What is the main selling point of the band and the album?
The main selling point about this band is that they are an alternative group. They were founded in 2012
and they are new and exciting. They are producing music which is nothing like chart music. This is new
and refreshing for their target audience which is what they are using as a selling point for selling their
albums. They make music that is not like your typical pop music band. They are also known for their gigs to
be very small and personal that they create a exquisite experience for their audience. There always
positive and in the public eye in a positive way and this creates more fans for them and making them more
liable for people to want to buy their music. They are constantly played on radio one this gives them a
selling point because this is constantly promoting the band. This is another big selling point to them as their
target audience are the type of people that listen to radio one. This gives them more fans constantly who
are tuning into this radio channel. This then gets sales of them then buying their albums. Radio one said
that they were “Refreshing and Outstanding.” As they cam from BBC Radio One introducing they have
been called “absolutely brilliant, one of a kind band.” They use these as selling points on their new album.
9
10. Hyperbole
Every marketing and PR campaign uses hyperbole. Its role is to make
things seem better than they really are by using exaggeration and emotive
words or imagery.
What are the words you will use? What words will help you sell and will
appeal to your audience?
For this marketing and PR campaign I am going to be using words like outstanding, refreshing, incredible,
extraordinary. These are all over the top words in which describe the band as something that’s very great.
These will appeal to the target audience as the band Grouplove have the same target audience as my
band and they have conquered America and the UK which shows they have a pretty huge fan base there
album uses quotes like “such an original band, incredible harmonies from Hannah”, “refreshing to hear and
extraordinary lyrics” (thelineofbestfit.com.) These have sold albums for this group and following the same
lines I believe these kind of words can sell albums for TGSB. My target audience are always trying to find
new music as this is what they take an interest in and using the term “refreshing” “new” “one of a kind” is
what they want to know. Being indie is about being individual and have an individual band is something
that they are always wanting to hear. These kind of words make the band look individual which is going to
be a selling point when it comes to selling heir album to their target audience.
10
11. Events
What events would you put on as part of the promotion of this band and
album? The kind of events that TGSB would do would be gigs. They are well known for doing gigs in
smaller venues. This is because they want to make them feel personal and small for their fans. They
always chose quirky bars and play their new music to promote their new album. They give away signed
copies and t-shirts for the first 20 people to turn up to the venue. They do gigs like these all over the
country. They also go to music events such as festivals and promote themselves by having posters around
and a stall selling their merchandise on there. This is promoting them as a band to people all together.
They would also put on events for charity as they are always doing positive activities in the public eye to
keep up this positive promotion about the band.
Would they play small secret gigs? They would play at small secret gigs because this is
what the band is all about they want to be more personal with their fans so they prefer to perform in more
smaller venues such as a quirky bar in Camden London. Places that are very popular for their target
audience to hang around in.
Would they appear for a signing in a flagship record store? They would appear
for a signing in a record store as they want to do anything to be able to meet their fans. They know that
their fans are important to them so they would go to HMV and small independent music stores to do
signings whenever a new album is released. They want to keep their fans happy to make sure they get that
support.
11
12. Events
Would they play on TV chat shows? They would not be shown on chart shows that much
like UKTOP40 and SMASH HITS. If a particular song becomes popular they could find themselves being in
the charts but that’s not why they make their music. They make their music because they enjoy it and they
do it for their target audience. They are being played on music channels like Kerrang, VIVA, 4music and
MTV. It wouldn’t be much in the charts it would be more when they play alternative hits like they have a
track of the week and it is normally someone that is not in the charts regularly.
Would they go on a huge arena tour? They don’t do huge area tours as they don’t have
the fans to fill up the area and that is not their style. They are more into doing smaller gigs. They have
toured around smaller venues such as the O2 academy in Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow. These are music
smaller where they have the fans to fill up the venue and they are able to keep it personal and not overly
big and flashy. They like to perform more raw.
What other events and happenings could you create to raise the public
profile of the band? They want to bring a book out to show their fans how they formed the group
and how they got to where they are today and this would mean having a book singing. They would tour
selected Waterstones to greet their fans and do a book singing. This creates a public profile of the band.
They would also host giveaway concerts for their fans to say thank you for their support. They are very
much like the band Grouplove.
12
13. Internal motivation
What is the motivation behind this project? The motivation behind this project is getting
the band TGSB out there and more popular, I am hoping to raise their public profile of this band. Even
though they have their make target audience they want to change the perception of people that anyone
can like them. The motivation is knowing that it is all going to worth while as at the end they will be claiming
the benefits of being much more well known and having a lot more fans. It will all be worth while at the end
What is it an important project for you? It is important to me because I want this band to
succeed. They are a very strong band and they have a lot of potential to become one of the best bands in
the UK. It is important to me that I get them up to that level of being a really strong band that is why this
project is important to me.
Why is it an important project for the band? It is an important project to the band
because it is going to raise their public profile which will get them more money and more noticed which is
what they need. It is important to them that this project gives them more publicity because this is what is
going to make them more successful. They are wanting people to see them as band that really cares and
really wants to do something positive with their fame so this is why this project is important to them as it is
going to change peoples perception of them. They are not just another indie alternative rock band. They
are here to make a difference.
13
14. Motivation of media
Why would the media be interested in this project? They are going to be interested in
this project because it is a working process. They are starting from a point of them being a good band and
they are wanting to be even better which they are going to go do charity work and activities that bands
don’t normally do together. So the media are going to want to log this and use it as it is going to be
shocking for the public and will make good news stories.
Which parts of the media or media products (be specific) would be
interested in the project? One of the main products will be publication work. Publication work will
want to know about this project as it will making excellent stories. Publications such as Kerrang and NME.
This project will make a very inspiring and interesting story to bands just like them and they will in
interested in publishing this in their magazines. Also newspaper such as the independent. This news paper
has a younger audience such as student 20-30 and this their story is something that they will want to read
as they may possibly be a fan of the band. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter will also be
interested as they can share their journey and log it. They can keep the fans interested by posting pictures
and having statues that are sharing and keeping the public interested in what the band is doing. This is a
way that the band is having their fans getting involved in their project.
