Deuterium content in tap water varies by location and may be a risk factor for mental disorders. Higher deuterium levels in tap water have shown a correlation with increased prevalence of stress-related conditions. A study on mice found that those given water with lower deuterium levels were less likely to develop depression-like symptoms after chronic stress compared to mice given higher deuterium water. Replacing normal tap water with deuterium-depleted water may help reduce risks of psychosocial distress and depression.
