We made it to Whitman Mission. It s burned down and there is nothing left. Literally everything
is burned down. We met a family and they told us to go Fort Vancouver for supplies and then go to
Oregon City but we decided to just travel the rest of the way to Oregon City without stopping. We
leave for Oregon City today and we will get there in a few days. Betsy is sick once again and
running low on energy. We finally make it about halfway and we get to The Dalles. It s a nice
place but now we got to go on the Barlow Road. It is pretty dumb but we have to pay a toll to use
this road too. It came out as 2.80 total but we can t spend much so instead we pay 1 dollar and we

Imagine you are a cute little puppy, you have luxurious fur and seamlessly floppy ears; you live in

every dog gets the opportunity to go on a nice brisk walk often, sometimes not at all. Our goal is to

Banking Concept of Education Being oppressed means the absence of choices Bell Hooks. Pablo
Freire views the banking concept of education as an oppressive form of learning which essentially
limits the students creativity and innovation in mastering the material. I personally have had the
misfortune of partaking in a class that followed the banking concept, my Biology two class. To this
day I still feel the ramifications of having learned bio through the banking concept which has put a
significant handicap on me compared to my peers that used the problem inducing method. In the

Our teacher viewed the textbook and his specific way of thinking as the only valid source of
information which in order to get a good grade, we, the students had to simply accept. Due to the
fact that the class heavily favored a specific way of thinking, and types of information which
were viewed as important it dampened the need to find novel ways of learning that suited
individual students better, and limited the need to critically think about the subject which would
have deepened comprehension. This system also gave students a disillusion that they understood
the subject since they had a high grade in the class. My personal disillusion broke after I took
my first collage bio assignment. The assignment was on a subject we covered in bio 2, and I
vividly remember scoring well on that test, but to my surprise I struggled on the assignment. I
came to the realization that I just knew facts about the subject, rather then actually understanding
what was happening. The assignments asked questions which required a deep understanding of
the actually processes in contrast to knowing where specific items were or what the definition of
a term was. Unlike high school, in college I was given the freedom to learn any way which I saw
fit so I decided to experiment with different ways of studying. I found that

5. Hidden Truths in The Enormous Radio Essay
Hidden Truths in The Enormous Radio
John Cheever s The Enormous Radio represents the enormous amount of hidden truths in American
society of the 1940s. The problems with society during this time were hidden behind a facade of
goodness; however, this false innocence becomes visible through the radio owned by the Westcotts.
The radio causes the Westcotts to evolve from an innocent, naive pair who believe that everything
they see is real, into individuals who realize that appearances are deceiving.
Cheever develops the motif of innocence by details like Irene s wide, fine forehead upon which
nothing at all had been written (817). Cheever also includes the fact that Irene wore a coat of fitch
skins dyed to resemble mink ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the problems of their neighbors are broadcast into the Westcott s living room, the weather
outside begins to reflect the climate inside: There were hundreds of clouds in the sky, as though
the south wind had broken the winter into pieces and were blowing it north (821). The Westcott s
view of society and of themselves is being changed from a beautiful, solid picture of appearances
into many jagged, separate pieces that do not seem to fit together.
Richard Rupp asserts that the movement From external to internal sorrow is only a short,
inevitable step (109). This step of internalizing the sorrow occurs in several different situations.
The first one occurs when the Westcotts are returning from the dinner party. Irene says They re
really such nice people, aren t they? They have such nice faces. Actually, they re so much nicer
than a lot of the people we know (822). Irene is beginning to recognize that the people they know
have deceiving faces and are full of sorrow; however, the full recognition that these nice people,
along with her own family, are hiding secrets behind innocent faces as well, has not been
internalized quite yet. The second situation involves the discussion between Irene and Jim. Irene
says to Jim Life is too terrible, too sordid and awful. But we ve never been like that, have we,
darling? Have we? I mean, we ve always been good and decent and loving to one

CURRENT ISSUES EFFECTING AMERICAN APPAREL :
March 28, 2010 THE NEW YORK POST
The fast talking CEO of American Apparel David Charney whose libertine lifestyle and racy
marketing campaigns have kept the clothing chain controversial and on the minds of its young
shoppers has had to scramble to keep his beloved company out of bankruptcy.
Charney had to give up a large equity stake in the operation to a private equity firm, which rode to
its rescue from bankruptcy .
He also was forced to slow the chain s rapid rate of expansion and had to deal with stores that
couldn t even keep their shelves fully stocked thanks to the vise like grip on cash kept by Lion
Capital, the London based investment firm whose March 2009 financing deal saved Charney s
bacon.
Moreover the retail chain s shares plunged 17 percent after the New York based concern reported
its fourth quarter profits had dropped a jaw dropping 23 percent. While soaring costs and anemic
sales sapped profits, investors were likewise rattled as the company delayed giving an outlook for
2010, citing restrictions imposed on its operations by lenders. Which ultimately spooked investors,
who raced for the exits sending shares to a close at $3.17, down 67 cents.
At the time of the downturn , the company had to implement firings of about 1,500 workers .
But there was a new tune being played last week.

8. The Importance Of Cyberbullying In Schools
In 1919, in the wake of World War I, Charles Schenck was arrested on the charge of violating the
Espionage Act of 1917 by encouraging eligible United States citizens not to comply with the draft
during the war. He took his case to the Supreme Court claiming that his freedom of speech granted
to him by the First Amendment had been violated. In a unanimous vote, the court ruled that in
times of “clear and present danger” the freedom of speech clause could be revoked.
This case served as a precedent in times of national crises and has allowed the government to better
protect the citizens of the United States. Many different situations that could fit into the category of
“clear and present danger”, and the term can correctly be defined as any situation in
which it is possible for a person, multiple people, or an institution to be harmed. Two examples of
these types of situations include the cyberbullying of students by their classmates and the

assurance that a horrible situation like that would never occur. They can clearly become extremely

Family law acts as one of the major categories in the Roman law that has been acknowledged
since the ancient times. These laws provided guidelines on how families should be run, the

This paper will focus on the three categories of family law since the ancient roman families. The
categories include adoption laws in the ancient Rome, marriage and pater familias. These three

The ancient Roman law allowed only monogamous marriage institutions where a roman citizen
could have only one spouse at a time. Historians have put forward claims that the Greco Roman
Monogamous marriages must have been cultivated by the egalitarianism of the republican as well
as the democratic political systems in the cities . The family law embraced the ancient roman
culture which was built on the belief of the early Christianity. The law perpetuated this belief as the
ideal culture in the Western Europe countries in the later age.
The family laws allowed marriage to have a mythical precedent where Sabine women could be
abducted and taken in marriage by their future husbands . This bride abduction custom was
considered as archaic though it was supported in the then family laws. This was so because the
Sabine women could not willingly accept to marry men from immigrant or rather lower social
classes . These men were therefore allowed to by the legal framework to abduct these Sabine
women on the condition that they would give them an honorable marriage. The abducted women
were promised by the provisions of the family law to enjoy a number of benefits which included
citizenship, property and children. The three elements provided for in the family law seemed to
define the purposes pf marriage in the ancient

ungodly, who reject it, will ultimately perish. As Kinder (1973) concludes, But the Day will

The company a man keeps testifies of his character. People of the same sort or with the same tastes

The psalmist tells us that those who delight in the law of the Lord (Ps. 1:2), will not be found

Over the length of this course, we have discussed several aspects of politics. We have studied
citizenship and obligations to society as a citizen, justice and what it means to us as individuals,
and how to go about enacting change within a community and around the world. Some of the most
important topics from this class included the characteristics, duties, and obligations of rulers of
government. In addition to the concept of rulers, we also studied the notion of authorityand the
moral and metaphysical implications of authority to individuals autonomy. Within each concept of
study, we read works from many authors with conflicting ontologies, constructed from their
differing views on human nature.
Within the study of rulers, we read differing views from five different authors. The first author, Plato
, wrote in his book, The Republic, that there are different levels of understanding the world. The
lowest level of understanding, he said, was when someone could see the shadow of the image, then
above that level of understanding was to understand the images themselves. That level consisted of
most of the people within a society. A select view could understand the next level; scientific
manifestations of objects. Finally, the highest level of understanding was known as understanding
the pure forms. Plato wrote that whoever understood the pure forms of the world was fit to be the
ruler, which he called the philosopher king. He believed this philosopher king would guide the

13. Branding And Why Is Branding
WHAT IS BRANDING?
Branding is the process of using a word or an image to identify a company or its products. It is
what separates competitors and helps consumers remember a product. The purpose of a brand is to
increase sales by making the product or service the most visible and desired by the consumer.
Branding is becoming more than a logo or a product. It is becoming a promise of quality and
reputation! It encompasses everything about a company, sometimes good and sometimes bad,
depending on the public s perception.
WHY IS BRANDING IMPORTANT?
So what is branding and why is it so important for your business?
Branding separates competitors and makes consumers remember a product.
In today s fast paced world, it is more important than ever to promote recognition of a product or
service. If you re remembered as a quality provider, then you will be encouraging repeat business.
Branding is a great way to promote this recognition because people are busy and tend to adhere to
familiarity. If consumers recognize a brand that they have previously used and they remember being
satisfied with it, then they are more likely to choose that product or service again. This is especially
true in the tremendous amount of advertising going on today. ... Show more content on

Branding is intended to identify goods or services and deliver the message that a particular
organization, business, or product is the only one that can suit customers needs.
Branding goes way beyond just a logo or graphic element. When you think about your brand, you
really want to think about your entire customer experience. Everything from your logo, your
website, your social media experiences, the way you answer the phone, to the way your customers
experience your staff. When you look at this broad definition of branding, it can be a bit
overwhelming to think about what is involved in your brand.

17. The Importance Of The Statue Of Liberty
Annually, approximately four million people will visit the Statue of Liberty (Productions, Mixit).
The monument holds many meanings; a symbol of Franco American alliance, freedom, and liberty
(LLC, Shea Media.). Lady Liberty, and many other monuments, are held in high regard and beloved
by the American people. But how did this monument, and others, come to be? The idea of
monumentalizing an event or person isn t as straightforward as it sounds. While some people may
think the process is easy, many factors need to be taken into consideration. There are four main
factors that should be considered in the process of building a monument: The worthiness of the
event or person being considered for monumentalization, the location of the proposed monument,
and the materials and process of making the monument.
Arguably, the most important aspect of creating a monument is the worthiness of the person or
event in consideration of becoming a monument. While it is hypothetically possible to create a
monument to anything, some of the nation s greatest monuments, including the Martin Luther
King Jr. Memorial, 9/11 Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial, were created because the subjects
were carefully vetted and deemed worthy. It is hard to find a citizen of the United States that feels
the 9/11 attacks do not deserve a memorial, however, there are many monuments today that are up
for debate, and most likely should ve had more consideration of the subject before they were
erected. Recent

I gained many insights from these interactions and site visits; however, there were three that stood

One of the touted benefits of autonomous vehicles is that it will reduce the need for parking in
urban areas, where parking is often a premium. By 2035, it is estimated that the need for parking

speculate that individual car ownership will become a thing of the past, and that individuals will

longer needs to be parked on site, will arrive and take an individual to their desired destination.
For condominiums that are located in densely populated urban areas, parking spaces are often sold
between co owners at a premium. In most cases, onsite parking spaces are limited common

Dissection, by definition, is the pathological splitting or separation of tissue, according to Webster s
online dictionary. Beneath the simple definition lies an immense amount of controversy. This paper
will provide pros and cons regarding ethics of dissection. Dissection has many benefits. The
experience of dissectionis unforgettable. Things you can actually touch usually stick in your
head better, according to Dr. Damon Scoville. Dissection is an approach to science that creates a
lasting impression. Students gain many things from an experience with dissection. Some of
which include respect for life, and necessary skills for dissection that will be useful later in
higher level classes. The hand s on job really allows the student to gain a visual an
understanding. They learn the true positioning of organs and have the opportunity to feel them
while dissecting. The 3D view and texture friendly experience are things not offered in textbooks
or on screens. (5) Models and paper do not do justice or serve as a sense of discovery. As Mr.
Roger Kassebaum states, If you are going to be a surgeon or a veterinarian, that tactile feedback is
likely important. The procedure for dissection can be complex. With this complexity comes the
opportunity to teach students motor skills, how to follow directions, observation and comparison
skills, and the relationship between tissues and organs. (5) It is pretty evident that the educational

positive outcomes such as new understandings and values or negative outcomes being ramification
or consequences brought from a discovery. This is evident in Ang Lee s film Life of Piwhere during
Pi s journey and hardships lead to his new understandingof faith contrasted to his discovery to
survive on his journey, seen through his relationship with Richard Parker and his belief that animals
have souls, lead to vast ramifications. Similarly, in Julian Barnes short story Marriage Lines the

Pi s understanding of faith is further developed in the face of adversity during his time stranded
in the pacific. This is conveyed through Lee s use of magic realism in the daybreak scene,
where through Lee use of the wide shot of the horizon meeting the ocean, emphasising the hue
colours of orange which contrast s to Pi s message about God and placing his faith in him, God I
give myself to you. I am your vessel. Whatever comes I want to know. Show me . Through Pi s
actions of losing hope in the message in the bottle, emphasised in Lee s close up camera work and
stagnated water, but also in the rational world, he demonstrates his discovery of religion and faith
being tested, linking back to the quote of the older Pi. Pi s ultimate test of faith is demonstrated
through the Storm and the Carnivorous Island both considered forces of nature where Pi s faith and
submission to his faith are tested through both situations appearing to be less violent and dangerous
in nature than they truly are. Lee demonstrates this new understanding by again using the
experienced older Pi narrating the lessons learned in adversity, If I hadn t discovered the tooth, I
would have been lost, alone forever. Even when God seemed to abandon me he was watching... .
This final step ultimately displays how Pi found new understanding to his faith through the
experiences on his journey. Therefore, through Pi s journey leads him to the discovery of the new

23. Depression, Marital Distatisfaction, And Marital...
There have been many studies done which found a correlation between depression, marital
satisfaction, and marital dissatisfaction. Depression is defined as a medical illness that causes
feelings of sadness, loss of interest, change in appetite, feelings of worthlessness, and many other
symptoms including thoughts of death and suicide. Many researchers measure depression using
various methods such as affective self reports. Depression is often seen amongst teenagers and
some adults, but depression affects many others persons within our social networks. This can be
explained by the socialization hypothesis established by Shakya (2015) which states that
individuals influence one another in a way that one individual s psychological issues, such as
depression or happiness, will spread to other social contacts, much like the spread of an infectious
disease. Thus, depression can negatively affect marital satisfaction. Marital satisfaction refers to
whether the partners are content with their marriage and is often measured through a combination
of behavioral, affective, and cognitive self report measures. If depression negatively affects marital
satisfaction, then it will be contributing to marital dissatisfaction. Marital dissatisfaction indicates
the negative evaluation of a person s marital affairs. It is also measured through a combination of
behavioral, affective, and cognitive self report measures. Research shows that there is correlation
between marital dissatisfaction and

24. Summary Of Buchi Emecheta s Novel Kehinde
Buchi Emecheta tells of a woman s search for independence in her book Kehinde. The story
begins as Albert and Kehinde Okolo have been living in London for 18 years as a couple. When
Albert s sisters begin pressuring him to return to Nigeria, Kehinde resists the idea as their two
children have never been to Nigeriaand plus the fact that she found out that she is pregnant. But
because of Albert s insistence, she decided to get an abortion. Albert then leaves and Kehinde
remains behind to sell the house which was ordered by her husband. Later on, he calls their
children also to Nigeria. Kehinde is lonely at first but manages on her own. Eventually, she
begins to feel like a half person without Albert and so she gives up her job and departs for
Nigeria. On her arrival, she is horrified to learn that during their two year separation, Albert now
has a second wife. Kehinde decides to return to England and establish a life for herself there.
Kehinde s troubled relationship to Albert and her children are paralleled in her recollections of a
difficult childhood: Kehinde s twin was stillborn and her mother died at birth, prompting the family
to believe that she had eaten her sister. It s a story that she at first accepts, but as she becomes her
own womanshe rejects its superstitious quality. Some of the themes of the story are Feminism,
Masculinity, Patriarchy, Culture Clashes and Identity.
Kehinde relishes the freedom she has as a woman living in Britain, a freedom she knows she
would not have had in Nigeria. Emecheta makes us very aware of this when she writes, Kehinde
was aware that she could talk to her husband less formally than women like her sister. She related
to Albert as a friend, a compatriot, a confidant. (page 6) However, with her son Joshua newly
returned from Nigeria with strong patriarchal values, Kehinde s freedoms as a woman are
challenged as Joshua sees the house as his natural right as a man. However, Kehinde is unwilling
to allow her son to dominate her. She asserts: This is my house. (137) The last few pages of the
novel emerge as a power play between mother and son. In fact the last chapter, where Kehinde and
her son fight for dominance over the house is aptly named The Rebel , as Kehinde

Hog slaughter and the slaughter of all livestock has been a controversial topic over the last few
years. With many organizations out there against animal agriculture such as the Humane Society of
the United States (HSUS) and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) there has been a
constant push to find the most humane act of livestockharvest as possible while still maintaining
excellent meatquality. Currently, there are four acceptable methods: chemical (Carbon Dioxide
CO2), mechanical (captive bolt), mechanical (gunshot), and electrical (electrical current).
Currently, all four methods are approved for the slaughter of swine. None, however, are ideal and
all have advantages and disadvantages in pork quality effects which leaves it up for discussion of
which is the best system to use. According to the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act of
1978, no method of slaughtering or handling in connection with slaughtering shall be deemed to
comply with the public policy of the United States unless it is humane. Either of the following two
methods of slaughtering and handling are hereby found to be humane: (a) in the case of cattle,
calves, horses, mules, sheep, swine, and other livestock, all animals are rendered insensible to pain
by a single blow or gunshot or an electrical, chemical or other means that is rapid and effective,

Does Salt make Ice melt Faster?
Project Plan
Salt is known to be used on icy roads in certain areas of the country in the winter season to help
clear roadways to make them safer for travel. Salt causes a reaction that lowers the freezing point
of water. In this experiment we will test this method of applying salt to ice to see if for certain this is
true, and how much faster the salt melts if so. In this experiment, the Independent Variable will be
adding Salt to the ice and the Dependent variable will be the time it takes the ice to melt.
The Plan is to use two ice cubes in separate containers, and add ice to only one of these. Each will

for each Ice Cube to melt completely, taking progress notes as you go. For instance, the percentage

Reasoning
I chose this method to keep the two Ice cubes separated during the experiment, and to see the two
individual results of adding salt, or adding nothing to the ice. Keeping the Ice cubes separate
allows no error in collecting data on each individual subject. Adding salt to one will not interfere
with data collected on the ice cube melting with no additives. Some studies were very similar, but
most used many different substances to test how quickly Ice would melt. These included for
instance Sugar, and Sand.

One of my great difficulties with Kant s moral philosophy is that it suggests that our moral

Kant s idea seems to be that we treat someone as an end only insofar as we act toward him or her
in a way that he or she can understand as appropriate or justified: we should be able to explain
our reasons in such a way that the person will see the reasonableness of acting in the way we
propose. Thus, for example, Kant writes: he who is thinking of making a lying promise to others
will see at once that he would be using another human being merely as a means, without the latter
at the same time containing in himself the end. For he whom I propose by such a promise to use
for my own purposes cannot possibly assent to my mode of acting toward him, and therefore
cannot himself contain the end of this action. What is ruled out by this idea appears to be actions
which treat others in such a way that they do not have the opportunity to consent to what we are
doing. So we treat others as mere means when we force them to do something, or when we obtain
their consent through pressure or dishonesty. That s something I think is special about being human
having a normative self conception, wanting, to respect yourself, thinking of yourself as worthy or
unworthy, rating yourself, especially now with media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
and even online dating sites. It s a condition that gives a strange extra dimension to human life,

Introduction
Narcissism is a multiplex concept and represents different characteristics, demonstrative of both
good and horrible practices (Kubarych et al, 2004) that may clarify the inspirations driving social
networking sites use. In this way, conceptualizing narcissism as only a sole construct may make us
misconstrue the ways in which social networking platforms are utilized to fulfill different
psychological needs. Research has begun to analyze how undesirable parts of narcissistic identity
identify with conduct on Facebook (Carpenter, 2012).
The modern study seeks to explain the good and the undesirable parts of narcissism by discussing
about narcissism and how it relates to social networking sites use. Therefore, key differences in the
affordances of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram relevant to narcissism
research are then discussed, highlighting the ways in which the observed association between
narcissism and social networking platforms use may change depending on the type of social

After several days in a deep sleep he was fully recovered with no visible scaring. This time frame

degradation process produces single cells that undergo dramatic dedifferentiation: reverting back to
undifferentiated cells. To prevent differentiation of the newly formed crop of undifferentiated
cells, genes expressed in differentiated tissue are downregulated, such as mrf4 and myf5 in muscle

With the number of countries that have switched to the International Financial Reporting
Standards (IFRS) for their financial reporting, as well as the continued efforts made between the
IFRS and US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), it is evident that
international convergence is an overall appealing idea for global reporting. With that said, US
GAAP has worked with IFRS to create a universal standard; and while progress has been made to
diminish variances between the standards, there are still large, if not unattainable, efforts ahead of
us. The hype over a proposed uniform set of global accounting standards appears to be stunted by
the lost efforts in the convergence project between the US GAAP and IFRS. As the Financial
Accounting Standards Board(FASB) moves forward with its standards setting, there must be a
reevaluation of the goal for reporting standards and efforts with the International Accounting

Opinions regarding the optimal direction of the standard boards vary amongst regulators,

After the fascinating discoveries from Marco Polo, another event that was significant throughout
Western Civilization is the Edict of Milan. The Edict of Milan was a declaration that permanently
established religious tolerance for Christianity within the Roman Empire. The outcome of the
political agreement concluded, of course, in Milan, between emperors of Constantine Iand Licinius,
in February 313. The declaration, was made for the East by Licinius, granting all people the
freedom of any religion they wanted to worship. Also, it assured Christians of legal rights,
including the right to organize churches. Not only granting them freedom of religion and legal
rights, but giving back the property that was confiscated (brittanica.com). The Edict of Milan was a
significant event because it gave Christians rights and made Christianity a set religion. Not only did
the Edict of Milan make Christianity a set religion, it made everybody in Western Civilization
tolerate it. If it was not for Constantine I and Licinius in February of 313 coming up with the Edict
of Milan, Christianity would not be the set religion until later. Throughout Western Civilization, and
without the Edict of Milan, Christians would not only have any rights and no land. Also, there
would not be any Christian churches throughout Western Civilization if it was not for the Edict of

The opening paragraph for chapter 11 begins with the story written by George Orwell in 1949
about how the government, Big Brother , came in between two lovers in order to restore the loyalty
to the state. While this is more extreme than any government we have today, it still shows that in
order to work, the government and politics need power and authority. Authority is power that is
viewed as legitimately exercised over an individual, while coercion is power that is viewed as
unjustly used over an individual. The state has a monopoly on violence and can use violence to
punish those it sees fit. The only way that the state could be punished is by the state s citizens, if
enough of them see their power as illegitimate. There are different types of authority that Max
Weberidentified; traditional, rational legal, and charismatic. Traditional authority comes from
patterns and customs that place certain people in power. Rational legal authority is based on law
and written rules. Charismatic authority is based on loyalty and can have many problems when it
comes to the transfer of leadership. There are many types of authority, and there are also many
types of government. There is a monarchy, based on hereditary rule, and a democracywhere citizens
give the ruler power. There is also a dictatorship where an individual is in charge of all, and a
oligarchy where a group is in charge of all. The U.S. political system is made up of Democrats and

The Aftermath of Colonial Rule in The Dragon Can t Dance
The effects of colonialism are ingrained into every facet of society in Trinidad. The novel The
Dragon Can t Dance written by Earl Lovelace, has many aspects of a postcolonial society, from
the way people act on a day to day basis to the traditions upheld during Carnival. There is enough
evidence to argue that the town and all its residents are experiencing postcolonialism, or the
aftermath of colonial rule. Three central time frames in the novel will support this: before
Carnival, during and after Carnival, and after Aldrick s six year term in prison. These scenes in
the novel depict this theme and demonstrate the postcolonial values that still dominate Calvary
Hill. Postcolonialism also affects Pariag and is demonstrated by how he is treated by his
neighbors. Finally we will deconstruct the idea of the Carnival and figure out the relationship of
this to the Postcolonial Theory and how this is a reflection of colonial rule. Postcolonial theory
focuses on the aftermath of colonial rule and the way former colonizers and colonized people
interact in society. In many instances of postcolonialism the original culture of the colonized is lost
through cultural colonialism. Mimicry is an effect of this in which the colonized people begin to
take on the customs of the colonizers. Another is hybridity when the two cultures are are mixed and

42. Theme Of Revenge In The Spirit Of The Rainforest
Spirit of the Rainforest delivers an engaging tale of Yanomamo life through the eyes of Jungleman,
a powerful shaman in Venezuela. The novel presents a disturbing sampling of spirit warfare scenes,
detailing the transformation of some Yanomami people while initiating a transformation in the
worldview of its readers. Members of the culture engage in an endless cycle of slaughtering each
other in the name of hatred. The motif of Vengeance lingers throughout the novel. It s motivated by
the spirits of the rainforest and causes enormous chaos until it is thwarted by the peace given by
Yai Pada (God). Spiritof the Rainforest and recent research demonstrate the necessity of forgiveness
for personal growth and their relation to the spirit realm.
According to the accounts recorded in Spirit of the Rainforest, blood revenge is a prevalent
motivator of Yanomamo killings. The Oxford English Dictionary defines revenge as both an act
and a desire. In the act of revenge, individuals respond to a wrong by harming the transgressor.
Revenge can also refer to the urge to pay back wrongs; thus, a person can have revenge in his
heart (Schumann). The desire for vengeance resulting in murder weaves throughout the novel.
Oftentimes, before the genesis of a great conflict, a Yanomamo witnesses the death of relative,
allows anger to fester inside of him, dreams of revenge, then follows the promptings of a spirit to
go and commit heinous crimes. This ultimately results in celebration immediately followed by
fear, unrest, and chaos. Thus, the cycle of vengeance and grief spirals on in accordance with the
will of the evil spirits. One example of this cycle can be found in the story of Hairy and
Yellowflower. After Yellowflower s sister dies, Hairy forces her to marry him. After she
repeatedly runs away Hairy murders her in the jungle. Then, her brothers come to avenge her
death by beating Hairy s brother, which results in his death. So, Hairy travels back to her village
and when he got there, they killed that brother and their grief was satisfied (Ritchie, 106). However,
despite the satisfaction Hairy initially feels, his memories of killing Yellowflower haunt him. Soon,
his nights are consumed with nightmares and he can no

43. Describe The Characteristics Of Baroque Music
Baroque music generally has certain elements in common across the board, including but not
limited to: basso continuo, ornamentation, decisive rhythms, melodiousness, and use of several
textures. Of course, different countries in Western Europe had different styles and sub genres
within this. Theorists and composers, such as Jean Philippe Rameau with his treatise on harmony,
began defining characteristics of harmony by studying works of his contemporaries. Although the
Baroque musicas a whole sounds similar, it is important to keep in mind that it was not one unified
style, but rather it was separated and understood differently depending on region. Certain style
techniques can be attributed to different regions. For instance, while Italy was known to have
melodies that sounded similar to singing, France was focused on bringing shape to their melodies.
In contrast, German composers of this same time actually did not limit themselves to particular
National style choices, but rather looked to and studied that of composers in other countries.
Telemann was a German composer who exemplified this German style through his works. Not only
was he important for the sake of combining and utilizing different techniques and creating unique
pieces to that of his contemporaries, but he also was the most prolific composer of his time. This
Trumpet Concerto displays a blend of these cosmopolitan styles. Telemann borrowed the French
idea of shaping melodies. In the third movement, the

44. The Secret Power Within Chuck Norris
Being a fan of Chuck Norris prior to doing this book reflection, I was intrigued with reading his
book on religion. The Secret Power Within: Zen Solutions to Real Problems turned out to be a
captivating read. Throughout the book, Norris details his personal struggles and triumphs as well
as how he was able to find Zen despite personal turmoil. Through studying martial arts, Norris
became familiar with Zen (the core philosophy behind martial arts) ultimately changing his life
forever. His own personal experience with the philosophy of Zen gives readers an inside look into
the power of Zen and how it can be applied to everyday life. Ultimately, it was through Zen
Buddhismthat Chuck Norris was able to become the master of his own life,

45. The Jewish Community Of Today
The Jewish community of today believe that the Pharisees of Jesus time have transformed into a
group called rabbinic Judaism after the destruction of the temple in 70 C.E. They are believed to
be the Rabbi s of today, and are living proof, that they all were not against Jesus.
Today, all major branches of Judaismclaim at least some affinity with rabbinic Judaism of
centuries gone by, and perceive Judaism as issuing not simply from the Hebrew Bible but also
from the interpretation of those Scriptures by the Pharisees and their successors, the rabbis (Cook,
M. J. p. 441).
With this in mind, it is believed that we can get a better understanding of the Pharisees and Scribes
of when Jesus walked the earth. By using the Gospels and the rabbinic writings one could get a
clear picture of this group according to Dr. Cook. There is one account in the Gospel of John were
one Pharisee questions Jesus and is trying to understand who Jesus is and what message is he
bringing them.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to
Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one
can do these signs that you do unless God is with him (John 3:1 2).
Nicodemus mentions that he is not the only one, and must mean that other Pharisees and Scribes
did believe that Jesus was from God. They most likely thought Him to be a prophet and not the
Messiah because he did not come and rescue them from their captures.

46. Achieved Workplace Equality
Is it possible for women to have it all ? As times are changing so are the views for women on
having it all . Why Women Still Can t Have It All by Anne Marie Slaughter is an article about
how Slaughter realized she was living every feminists life but gave it up to be with her family. To
Slaughter having it all meant what type of job she had, but according to her she soon realized that,
having it all was not possible in many types of jobs, including high government office at least not
for very long. Anne Slaughter always had feminist beliefs and thought that if she could get a
foreign policy job in the State Department or the White House, she would stay there as long as she
loved what she was doing. She kept with this attitude until she... Show more content on

In her article, I see a lot of similarities as Slaughters. They both bring up the topic of a woman
having a good supportive spouse in order for her to expand in her career. In the article, there is a
quote from Laura Leigh Oyler, Having a supportive spouse has been essential for her career says
Oyler, the family s primary breadwinner. He was the first one to say you can do anything. I ve
got your back. Go for it, she says. (Johnson 1) Another similarity I found between Anne Slaughter
s article and Michelle Johnson s article is that they both share the same thoughts on the
workforce not being flexible for women. Nearly three quarters of Americans say having more
women in the workforce has been a change for the better in society and that marriages are more
satisfying when men and women share responsibilities of work and children. But workplaces and
laws have yet to catch up with the realities of family life, says Joan C. Williams,....The American
workplace is still perfectly designed for the workplace of the 1960s, Williams says. It assumes that
you have someone else taking care of all your other family obligations, and that just isn t true
anymore. (Johnson

47. How Does Nature Influence Emily Dickinson s Poetry
Emily Dickinson lived a large period of her life isolated from the outside world, surrounded by her
close family and friends. It is apparent that with most of her spare time, she wrote poems and letters.
Dickinson s poems were heavily influenced by the gothic movement in the 19th century of America,
and her fascination with nature that is exposed through her continuous theme of nature being the
source of joy or pain in your life. Both Dickinson s curiosity about nature, and the gothic
movement, influenced the recurring theme in her poems, which is displayed in the analysis of

Firstly, the repetition in the phrase we passed in the third stanza shows that the nature of
humans is to go through different stages in life before death. Dickinson ends the third stanza
with the line We passed the Setting Sun which is the last stage of life, death. This reveals that at
the start, the first stage of life is to go through school, study and get educated. By the time
humans grow up, mature, and grow old it is the setting sun; which means that life is almost over,
the way the sunsets there is just a bit of sunlight left before nighttime (either rephrase the entire
sentence or remove the highlighted part). Life is the same way; humans should not fear death
because it is a normal stage of living. One of the main reasons Dickinson wrote this, is because
she strongly believes that there is eternity and that afterlife does exist. She saw it as a glorious
and exciting time because everyone would be in heaven. This view was influenced by her
upbringing in a Christian home and was a Bible reader. Moreover, Dickinson refers to the grave
as her house in the line, We paused before a House that Seemed. This exemplifies that Dickinson is
very comfortable and pleased with the idea of death, leaving this life, and the afterlife. She
experienced many family deaths in her lifetime, like her mother, father, and

48. Buller Whistle Syndrome Analysis
The buller steer syndrome commonly observed in feedlots is an abnormal, aberrant behavioral
and social condition in which steers repeatedly mount another steer. The steer being mounted is
called the buller and the steer riding is called the rider . As a consequence of the excessive
riding, the buller steer often becomes exhausted, shows loss of hair, can develop swelling and
trauma along the dorsal line and tail head, and in extreme cases can suffer from broken bones or
may even die from injuries. There appears to be various degrees to bulling activity; some riding
activity is relatively harmless and falls under the category of horseplay. On the other end of the
spectrum we have serious bulling activity in which normal steers vigorously... Show more content

Riding is therefore more likely a way for a steer to exert dominance over another steer. The
mounting behavior seen among feedlot buller steers is more likely to be related to social
behavior, since in wild species of ungulates which are in the same taxonomic family as domestic
beef cattle, submissive behavior is expressed by allowing the dominant animal to mount. One
observational study by Klem et al. (1983) found that bullers were actually more aggressive than
riders and the authors postulated that bullers may not be readily submitting to dominant riders.
Social hierarchies between cattle appear to play a role in the generation of bullers in a feedlot
setting. Dominant steers are naturally more aggressive than other steers in the pen, so they like to
establish their dominance. Not surprisingly, when steers first arrive at a feedlot and are penned
together, the number of bullers is at its highest. When animals are re grouped, the number of
bullers rises again as new pen members establish their social status. There is also evidence that
suggests the expression of social dominance occurs more often in pens with large numbers of
animals (Grognet, 2004; Brower and Kiracofe, 1978; Irwin et al.,

INTRODUCTION
HIV is one of the leading causes of illness in the United States. It is estimated that 1,148,200
individuals are living with HIV, with about 207,800 or 18% that are undiagnosed and 47,500
newly infected in 2010, in the United States (CDC, 2013). Although there is no cure, treatment is
available through antiviral medications, but access to healthcare is often a major pitfall. Many of
the behaviors that make individuals more vulnerable for HIV, such as IV drug use and illegal
prostitution, also increase an individual s vulnerability to be incarcerated. In 2010, there were
20,093 reported inmates with HIV/AIDS in custody in either state or federal prison (HIV in
Prisons, 2012). Although this number has decreased since the previous census count of 20,880
individuals imprisoned in either state or federal custody, this still does not take into account the
individuals that are released from prison and are required to seek a continuation of treatment on
their own. In 2012, the number of admissions to state and federal prison in the United States was
609,800 offenders. The number of releases from U.S. prisons in 2012 (637,400) exceeded that of
admissions for the fourth consecutive year (Prisoners in

50. Mr Darcy Quotes And Analysis
13 February 2018 The Meaning of Letters In 2018, many forms of technology such as the computer,
iPhone, and social media apps allow many people to stay connected with one another every day. In
fact, many people incorporate technology into their house and workplace. As technology continues
to grow, the meaning of words communicated through technology seems to stretch farther from the
truth. In other words, as technology has become more readily available to public, more people have
communicated less about how they actually feel. However, before any of the common types of
technology were invented, many people relied on letters for honest communication. Letters were
used to express varying types of information, from sharing personal family... Show more content on

Darcy s letter to Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy s character such as his gentle nature, social class belief,
and his gentlemen personality are uncovered. In chapter 35, Mr. Darcy said, I had detached Mr.
Bingley from your sister, and the other, that I had, in defiance of various claims, in defiance of
honour and humanity, ruined the immediate prosperity and blasted the prospects of Mr.
Wickham., I am under the necessity of relating feelings which may be offensive to yours, I can
only say that I am sorry (Austen). Before this letter, Elizabeth viewed Mr. Darcy as a cold and
overconfident person that purposely separated Mr. Bingley and Jane. However, this quote
reveals that it was not his intention to purposefully separate Mr. Bingley from Jane; he
convinced Mr. Bingley that Jane did not have romantic feelings towards him. Furthermore, this
quote reveals his gentle nature and love towards Elizabeth because he sincerely apologizes to
Elizabeth for causing her distress. In the middle of his letter to Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy said, The
situation of your mother s family, though objectionable, was nothing in comparison to that total
want of propriety so frequently, so almost uniformly betrayed by herself, by your three younger
sisters, and occasionally even by your father (Austen). This quote reveals that Mr. Darcy
believes in the importance of social classes and appearances to fit society. Even though he
believes that Elizabeth belongs to a crazy family, he explained how he views Elizabeth separate
from her embarrassing family. Even though the difference in social classes would keep an
average couple apart, Mr. Darcy s and Elizabeth s love is so strong that they overlook their
differences in social class. Towards the end of the letter, Mr. Darcy said, I thought too ill of him
to invite him to Pemberley, or admit his society in town. In town I believe he chiefly lived, but
his studying the law was a mere pretence, and being now free from all restraint, his life was a life of

51. Compare And Contrast New England And Middle Colonies
The British colonies of New England, Middle, and Southern developed during the 17th and 18th
centuries as a result of the competitive nature of the European explorers to colonize and obtain
more land than the others. The New England colonies were built upon the objectives of religious
freedom and economic prosperity. The population was consistently increasing as child birth
doubled and life expectancy improved. They experienced long winters and short summers. The
colonies were located nearby the Atlantic Ocean, which provided the colonists with great seaports.
These ports were used for trade as well as fishing sea life such as whales and fish. Here is where
they set up the Atlantic trade network, importing and exporting goods with England,... Show more

Like the other colonies, the south established trading posts. They traded tobacco, rice, sugar,
slaves, and indigo with England. The flat and coastal plains permitted a great abundance of cash
crop plantations. The terrain also comprised of swampy lands, rivers, good harbors, and bays.
The climate was humid unlike New England, which created mild winters and hot summers. The
main goal of the south was economic prosperity. This invited more men to travel from England
by themselves, which decreased the number of women. The ratio of men to women was 7:1.
Unlike New England and the Middle, the Southern colony s life expectancy was low due to
outbreaks of malaria and yellow fever. Like New England, the south was dominated by few
religions. Protestants and Catholics immigrated for religious freedom. The protestants however
made up the majority of the population. Cecelius Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore, was
granted Maryland, where the House of Delegates passed the Act of Toleration that allowed
religious freedoms to all Christians in fear of a Protestant takeover. Unfortunately for the
Catholics, the Protestants did take over and removed them from the legislature. The south
developed an elected legislature with Georgia being ruled as a royal colony and Sir William
Berkeley governing Virginia. Similarly to New England, the Native Americans were captured and

52. Review Of Richard Strauss s The Ring Of The Nibelungen
Wilhelm Richard Wagner (German, 22 May 1813 13 February 1883) was a German composer,

53. Crowd Behavior Analysis
35 students involved themselves in the rally. 15 of these students had rated themselves as shy.
Eight of those were rated as shy too by their classmates. We therefore had 8 students who we
could, almost with conviction, define as shy. This was particularly so since results of the
instrument supported this assessment. Special indirect observation was therefore accorded these 8
shy students to see whether or not they lost their personalty, as classical crowd psychology
asserted, under influence of the crowd. The rally itself occurred for an hour between the times of
2.00 3.00pm. The excuse was of calling for greater student rights on campus. I chose a topic that we
thought students would be particularly interested in. We also chose a time of day where students
would not be too tired, nor did they have a heavy workload of classes on that particular day. The
march too was outside their campus so students would not have to travel to it. We also attempted to
chose a cool day. All these conditions were selected with the intention of excluding any possible
confounding elemetn. The students seemed sufficiently motivated. Three of the eight shy students
evidenced slightly louder behavior than usual more extroverted with one carrying a banner and the
others actually, to some extent, being caught up in the engineered fervor. The others, however,
seemed less disinterested with two actually walking away minutes after the rally had started. Four
