Hawker is a person who offers goods and/or services for sale to the public without
having a permanent built-up structure but with a temporary static structure or mobile
stall. The hawkers could be mobile and move from place to place carrying their wares
on push carts or in cycles or baskets on their heads or could sell their wares in moving
buses. Or trains the government of India has used the term urban hawkers as inclusive
of traders and service provider’s .
Street Hawking is generally considered as a “menace” or an “eyesore” that prevents the
Development of Mumbai as a world-class city. But this article explores the essential
presence of hawkers in a city, it is necessary to understand what hawkers actually do in
that space, and how they conceptualize their own relationship to it. The study relates to
the life style of hawkers in Mumbai.
3. Working in the informal sector (Poverty, lack of skills and proper
education)
• Employment Scenario of Mumbai Hawkers - a study based on
the 1961 Census data, Heather and Vijay Joshi (1976) found that 65%of the
city’s workforce were engaged in the organized sector while only 35% were
in the unorganized sector.
• Street Hawkers and the Urban Economy - The census conducted,
by Tata Institute of Social Sciences ( TISS-YAVA) of Hawkers occupying
municipal lands showed that there were 102,401 hawkers in these areas in
1998. The census did not include privately owned lands, land owned by
Bombay Port Trust, Railways and other central government owned land. If
we include all these areas then the total number should be 250,000 or more.
