Lichtenstein hernioplasty is a tension-free hernia repair technique that uses a polypropylene mesh to strengthen the posterior wall. A mesh sized 8x16cm is tailored for each patient, with a slit added to allow the spermatic cord to pass through. The mesh is sutured medially to overlap the pubic tubercle and laterally beyond the deep ring. Post-operative, fibroblasts and capillaries grow over the mesh, converting it into a thick fibrous sheath that reinforces the posterior wall.
