• Materials and resources: book New Headway, Elementary, third edition;
photocopies, and pictures.
• Integration of skills: reading and speaking.
• Seating arrangement: everyone in their seat, in 6 columns. I cannot even
change students' places as they were assigned by the headmaster.
• Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the
class: some interruptions, as usual. I already asked the preceptor to only get
into the classroom if it very important.
• Potential problems students may have with the language: students might
get confused with prepositions, but showing them their meaning will help.
• Assessment: their ability to describe a room.
• Teaching approach: Communicative.
Warm up (5')
Activity 1
- Good morning my students! How are you? Fine? Let's write the date on
the board, what day is it today? Friday, and the number is...26th, good.
- How is your day so far? Good? I'm glad to hear that. Let's start with
today's lesson.
- You know, in my free time I want to relax, watch TV, read a book…and I
do this in my living room. Look at this picture, this is my living room.
- In my living room there is a sofa, there is an armchair, there is a table in
front of the sofa, there is a rug under the table, there is a lamp next to the
armchair and there are two pictures behind the sofa. Very nice, right?
Development (40')
Activity 2 (15')
- Now let’s complete the next chart. You have many objects, some of them
are placed in the living room, others in the kitchen, and other in both of
them. So, write the words in the correct column. Let’s start.
Living room Kitchen Both
- This is an armchair, does it go in the living room, in the kitchen or in both
of them? Don’t say it out loud, we’ll check it later.
- Now, this is a fridge. Write fridge in the correct column.
- This is a TV.
- This is a table.
- This is a shelf.
- This is a plant.
- This is a DVD player.
- This is a dishwasher.
- This is a sink.
- This is a lamp.
- This is a cooker.
- This is a washing machine.
- This is a telephone.
- This is a cupboard.
- And finally this is a sofa.
- Now, could you place the words in the correct column? Let’s check all
together. I’ll name an object and you’ll say “kitchen”, “living room” or
“both”.
Activity 3 (10’)
- Very good! Now look at this picture. I’m going to give each of you a
copy.
- Now complete the sentences with: on, under, next to, in front of, behind.
a. The cat is……….the sofa……..the woman.
b. The DVD player is………the television.
c. There’s a photo…………the mirror.
d. There aren’t any pictures………..the walls.
e. There’s a lamp……..the sofa.
f. There are magazines………the rug……..sofa.
To check the sentences, I’ll select different students at random so they read
them and the rest listen and check with their own answers.
Activity 4 (9’)
- Now open your books on page 23 please. Look at exercise 1, that girl is
Suzie, and that’s her bedroom. Look at the picture and read the sentences
from 1 to 10 and state if they are true (v) or false (x).
Again, to check for the answers, each student will read a different sentence
and the rest must listen to see if they were right or wrong.

I cannot even change students' places as they were assigned by the headmaster. • Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: some interruptions, as usual. I already asked the preceptor to only get into the classroom if it very important. • Potential problems students may have with the language: students might get confused with prepositions, but showing them their meaning will help. • Assessment: their ability to describe a room. • Teaching approach: Communicative.
  • 3. Warm up (5') Activity 1 - Good morning my students! How are you? Fine? Let's write the date on the board, what day is it today? Friday, and the number is...26th, good. - How is your day so far? Good? I'm glad to hear that. Let's start with today's lesson. - You know, in my free time I want to relax, watch TV, read a book…and I do this in my living room. Look at this picture, this is my living room. - In my living room there is a sofa, there is an armchair, there is a table in front of the sofa, there is a rug under the table, there is a lamp next to the armchair and there are two pictures behind the sofa. Very nice, right? Development (40') Activity 2 (15') - Now let’s complete the next chart. You have many objects, some of them are placed in the living room, others in the kitchen, and other in both of them. So, write the words in the correct column. Let’s start. Living room Kitchen Both
  • 4. - This is an armchair, does it go in the living room, in the kitchen or in both of them? Don’t say it out loud, we’ll check it later. - Now, this is a fridge. Write fridge in the correct column. - This is a TV. - This is a table.
  • 5. - This is a shelf. - This is a plant. - This is a DVD player. - This is a dishwasher.
  • 6. - This is a sink. - This is a lamp. - This is a cooker.
  • 7. - This is a washing machine. - This is a telephone. - This is a cupboard.
  • 8. - And finally this is a sofa. - Now, could you place the words in the correct column? Let’s check all together. I’ll name an object and you’ll say “kitchen”, “living room” or “both”. Activity 3 (10’) - Very good! Now look at this picture. I’m going to give each of you a copy. - Now complete the sentences with: on, under, next to, in front of, behind. a. The cat is……….the sofa……..the woman. b. The DVD player is………the television. c. There’s a photo…………the mirror. d. There aren’t any pictures………..the walls. e. There’s a lamp……..the sofa. f. There are magazines………the rug……..sofa.
  • 9. To check the sentences, I’ll select different students at random so they read them and the rest listen and check with their own answers. Activity 4 (9’) - Now open your books on page 23 please. Look at exercise 1, that girl is Suzie, and that’s her bedroom. Look at the picture and read the sentences from 1 to 10 and state if they are true (v) or false (x).
  • 10. Again, to check for the answers, each student will read a different sentence and the rest must listen to see if they were right or wrong. Closure (1') - That is excellent, very good, well done! - Remember to revise all the new vocabulary at home! See you next class! Good bye!
