CLASS 1
LESSON DEVELOPMENT
ROUTINE 5’
Purpose: to greet students and get them ready to start the lesson.
First of all, I will enter to the classroomand greet my students,
T: Good morning, children.,
Ss: Good morning, Miss.
T: How are you today?
Ss: Fine, and you?
T: I’m good! Well, let’s call the roll.
LEAD –IN 5’
Purpose: to engage student on learning a new topic. Create mental linkages between
previous and new knowledge.
Now, let’s write the date on the board. What day is it today?
Ss: Today is Tuesday!
T: Very good, today is Tuesday. And what about tomorrow? (And I’ll mime the word
tomorrow by rolling my hands in front of my face). What day is it tomorrow? Today is
Tuesday and tomorrow is….
Ss: Wednesday!!
T: Yes! Very good, children! And what about yesterday? (I’ll point my thumbs back).
What day was it yesterday? Today is Tuesday, tomorrow is Wednesday and yesterday
was…
Ss: Monday!
T: Good job!! Now, let’s do this.
I’ll write 3 lines on the floor using a piece of chalk. In the line in the middle I’ll stick a
sheet of paper with the word ‘today’ written on it. In line 1, there will be the word
tomorrow and in line 3, the word yesterday.
T: Stand up from your chair and come here. Stand up over line 2. Okay, good! So…
Today is..
Ss: Today is Tuesday.
T: Great! Now, let’s jump over line 1. (I’ll expect students’ reply) Tomo…
Ss: Tomorrow is Wednesday.
T: Nice! Let’s jump over line 3! Yesterday was…
Ss: Yesterday was Monday!
In the first part, I introduced students to the word yesterday by asking the question
“What day was it yesterday?”, and to make the concept clearer, I decided to make
this short activity. In this way, student who needs to observe things will have a clear
idea of what we mean when we say the word “yesterday”.
Transition: Well, now… Let me tell you something… Yesterday was Monday and I…
What did I do yesterday?
PRESENTATION 15’
Purpose: to introduce a new grammar topic – Past simple (reg verbs, affirmative
forms)
On this stage, I’ll show students some pictures of actions they already know (as an
alternative I can mime the actions). The point is that all the actions must be regular
verbs. I’ll tell Ss about the things I did the previous day and I’ll encourage them to talk
about past activities.
I’ll write the word ‘yesterday’ on the board.
T: Okay, so….What did I do yesterday? I vi…vis…
I’ll show this picture.
Ss: Visit!!
T: Great! Yesterday I visited a friend.
I’ll write the verb visit a friend on the board
Then, I’ll show another picture.
T: And we… (I’ll wait for students answer)
Ss: Cook!
I’ll write this action on the board, too.
T: Okay, well done! Then we…
Ss: Watch TV!
T: Yes! We watched Netflix and….
I’ll mime the action ‘talk’ by rolling my index finger in front of my mouth.
Ss: Talk!
T: Excellent, children!! We watched Netflix and we talked a lot! Okay, so let’s see…
I’ll draw students’ attention to the board and I’ll use a different colour chalk to write
the suffix –ed to all the actions.
visit ed cook ed
watch ed talk ed
T: Okay, so… Yesterday I visited a friend and we cooked, we watched Netflix and we
talked a lot! Who wants to talk about yesterday? What about you Tiago?
Tiago: Mmm yesterday…visited… grandparents.
T: Excellent, Tiago! Yesterday you visited your grandparents. And you Ailen?
Ailén: Yesterday I watched TV.
T: Fantastic!! Yesterday Ailén watched TV! Someone else?
Ignacio: Me, me!! Yesterday I cooked pizza!
Then I’ll stick the following pictures on the board or as an alternative, I can bring from
home a cardboard with the pictures already placed on it or maybe I can project the
pictures on a screen.
T: Last year (I’ll mime last by pointing my thumbs back and I’ll write the year 2019 on
the board) I travelled to Paris. I visited the Eiffel tower. I visited a museum and I
walked a lot (I’ll mime this action and point to the last picture). I really enjoyed my
last holidays!!
I’ll write a sentence under each picture. I’ll encourage students to help me to write
them all or if there’s a volunteer, I’ll let her/him to write the sentence on the board.
T: Okay. So, let’s write the sentences. Can you help me?
Ailén: Can I write a sentence, Miss?
T: Sure! Let’s help Ailén!
After writing all the sentences, I’ll ask some students what they did in their last
holidays.
T: So now, tell me Sofi, where did you go in your last holidays? I travelled to…
Sofia: I travelled to Las Grutas.
Joaquin: Me too, I travelled to Las Grutas!
T: Good! You travelled to Las Grutas! And what about you Ezequiel? Last holidays I..
Ezequiel: Last holidays I… puedo usar otra acción? Visit!
T: Sure!
Ezequiel: I visited my grandparents.
T: That’s fantastic, you visited your grandparents!
Observation: every time I repeat the sentences, I’ll put emphasis on the
pronunciation of the verbs. Anyway, I won’t expect students to have a good
pronunciation at the very beginning.
PRACTICE AND PRODUCTION 15’
Purpose: to introduce new vocabulary actions and engage students on reading short
texts. To perform reading comprehension activities.
In this stage, I’ll show students three different pictures from different places and they
will have to match the picture to three short texts. I’ll hand out a copy of the three
texts per child.
These are the pictures of the places,
T: Let’s look at these pictures. What do you see?
S1: The beach!
S2: Mountains!
S3: A city!
T: Well done! And what can you do in these places?
Speaking
We can have a brainstorming session here. I’ll elicit some vocabulary relating to
holiday activities.
T: Good ideas! And there are some more activities we can do! Let’s see, I’ll give some
copies, okay. Let’s read altogether! If you want you can do this activity with a partner.
Activity 1 – Vocabulary
Match the verbs with suitable phrases. There is one example.
1 Sunbathe
2 Climb
3 Sail
4 Dance
5 Camp
6 Stay
7 Enjoy
a. my holidays
b. in a nightclub
c. at a hotel
d. on a tent
e. on the beach
f. on a boat
g. a mountain
Then Ss will do the 2nd activity. Each student will have the following copy,
Activity 2 - Reading
Read the following texts and match the people to the places on the picture.
Last holidays, I travelled to London,
England. I stayed in a big hotel near
the river. I visited a museum and at
night, I danced in a nightclub and
talked with people from China.
That’s was great!
Hello! I travelled to Honolulu,
Hawaii last month. I camped on a
tent and I sunbathed at the beach. I
also sailed on a boat. I really
enjoyed my holidays in Hawaii!
I travelled to Bariloche with my
family. We climbed mountains and
we visited the Nahuel Huapi
National Park. We walked about 5
km! It was crazy!
Note: I chose those two singers and a famous Instagrammer because those people
are the ones I always hear students talking about them in the classroom.
Speaking
After the matching activity, Ss will have 2 or 3 minutes to share their answers to the
class.
HOMEWORK
Activity 3 – Reading comprehension
Read the shorts texts again and correct the information. There is one example.
0. Tini travelled to Hawaii.
She travelled to Bariloche
1. Billie stayed on a tent.
2. Juanpa sailed on a boat in London.
3. Tini visited a museum.
4. Juanpa sunbathed on a National Park.
5. Billie walked 5 km.
CLOSURE 5’
Purpose: to congratulate Ss for their efforts, explain homework and say goodbye.
T: Okay children; let me tell you that you did a good job today! And remember to do
your homework. I’ll see you next class!
CLASS 2
LESSON DEVELOPMENT
ROUTINE 5’
Purpose: to greet students and get them ready to start the lesson.
First of all, I will enter to the classroomand greet my students,
T: Good morning, children.,
Ss: Good morning, Miss.
T: How are you today?
Ss: Fine, and you?
T: I’m good! Well, let’s call the roll.
Transition: Okay, let’s talk about how much we can remember from our previous
class.
LED-IN 5’
Purpose: to motivate students to talk about past activities.
I’ll start the class by asking some Ss about what they did the previous day.
T: Well, yesterday I watched Guido’s TV program. What did you do yesterday Abril?
Remember we can use the verbs from the previous class. So you can read from your
folders.
Abril: Yesterday I visited my cousins.
T: Nice! And you, Anto?
Antonella: Yesterday I cooked.
T: Great! I cooked too. What about you Gonza?
Gonzalo: Yesterday… I… I don’t remember.
T: Played PS4? Played football? Visited a friend? Cooked?
Gonzalo: Yes, I played…basketball.
Transition: Okay, you did lots of things yesterday. Let’s move onto something else.
PRESENTATION 5’
Purpose: to notice the different pronunciation of the verbs.
I’ll ask Ss if they can remember more actions from the previous class and I’ll write
them on the board. I’ll put emphasis on the pronunciation. Children will repeat the
pronunciation after me.
T: Okay, good examples. Now let’s repeat altogether… talked…talked.
Ss: Talked
T: Well done! Talked. In which column can we place this word? Here, here or here?
(Pointing to each column). Talked.
S1: 2 column!
T: Okay, 2nd column…what do you think? Is it right?
Ss: Yes!
T: Excellent! Let’s do the same with the rest of the verbs.
PRACTICE 10’
Purpose: to use an interactive pronunciation dictionary.
On this stage, students will work in groups of 4 or 6. Each group will have a netbook.
Each netbook has the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary. (I’ve got the CD so before
the class I’ll install the app on the netbooks)
.
I’ll give students 4 or 5 verbs and they will have to look them up on the dictionary,
find the pronunciation and try to repeat the words. At the end of the activity, each
group will share their work with class and teach their peers the pronunciation of the
verbs. I’ll let them know that they have to pay attention on the symbols /t/, /d/ and
/id/.
Activity 1 – Pronunciation
Find the verbs on the pronunciation dictionary and then write the past simple in
the correct circle. Then read them aloud.
Sunbathe – Climb – Visit – Stay – Walk – Sail – Camp
PRODUCTION 15’
Purpose: to write about our last holidays
On this stage, I’ll encourage students to write about their own experience in their
holidays. The idea is to write a short paragraph talking about the activities they did on
their last holidays. Ss will be allowed to use activity 2 from class 1 as a model to write
the text.
Activity 2 – Writing production
Write a paragraph about yourlast holidays. You can follow the model of the texts
from activity 2.
HOMEWORK
Purpose: to prepare a presentation for the next class.
Go to www.canva.com and upload some picture of your last holidays. Write the
text from the previous activity1. You can add a title and some elements as the ones
you can see below. Then get ready to read or talk about your holidays in front of
the class. You can do it!!
CLOSURE 5’
Purpose: to congratulate Ss for their improvement and effort, explain homework and
say goodbye.
1 The activity must have been already checked by the teacher.
T: Okay children, it’s time to say goodbye! But, before leaving I want to tell you
something else, congratulations on your work!! You did an amazing job working
together! And that you remember you have homework to do. Next class we will have
a presentation. So practise as much as you can. I’ll see you next class!
Some further observations:
 I’ve designed the activities based on my teaching experience. The activity
using the lines and the three words on the floor worked very well with some
10-year-old students.
 I always teach the alphabet and I introduce students to the sounds of English
using the phonemic chart. So I assume that these students can recognise
some of the symbols in the pronunciation activity.
 Something I always use is Canva. Even my 8-year-old students can use it and
design posters. That is why I didn’t teach how to use Canva in this lesson.
