• Teaching approach: Communicative. It's the best approach to foster communication
and acquire new vocabulary. (I cannot find what other teaching approach I’m including
in my lessons, I get confused when I read the definitions, is there a text I can read to
help me with that?)
• Materials and resources: Chart, photocopies, video.
• Integration of skills: reading, by reading a text about the topic, speaking by describing
the best holidays of their lives, listening by watching to a video, and writing by writing
about their imaginary holidays.
• Seating arrangement: in pairs, looking at the board. Occasionally in groups of four.
• Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: there are
many interruptions because the secretary or the preceptors have to give messages to the
students, but maintaining them occupied with work will help them to not loose focus.
• Potential problems students may have with the language: students might have
problems to remember the past form of the irregular verbs, so they’ll work with a list
that is at the end of the course book they usually work with.
• Assessment: their ability to talk about past actions using irregular verbs and the
activities they did during their imaginary holidays and the best holidays of their lives.
Routine (3')
- Good morning everyone! How are you today? I'm very glad, I hope you are glad to see
me again.
- Can anyone tell me the date please? I'll write it on the board.
Warm up (12')
- Well, tell me what did you do last weekend? Did you do your homework? Did you eat
at a restaurant? Did you spend time with your friends? Let's share your weekend
experiences with your classmates.
- Now we’ll watch a video between minute 1:10 and 2:55 about some activities that
people usually do. While we watch it, pay attention to the change the verbs suffer when
they are in past tense, you’ll find all of them in the list at the back of your books, so
check them while we watch the video.

Development (62')
Activity 1 (15’)
- Now let’s continue talking about some activities that people did. We are going to
read a text* about Jared Lambert, who is a popular TV personality and millions
of people watch his programme, Planet Now, every week. Jared usually visits
exciting places where he does lots of crazy and dangerous things.
Planet Now
Jared made his first TV show in 2007. It was a travel programme but he didn’t
eat strange food then. He went to the rainforest, he talked about it and he took photos of
the animals and birds.
4. It wasn’t a very successful programme, the television company wanted a
different programme. Once, in the jungle, Jared saw a big insect on a tree. It was ugly
but for the local people it was food. Jared ate it! “It was horrible”, he says “but I was
hungry”.
It was a brilliant idea, the public loved it! The following week, Jared ate three
strange insects. He drank the juice of a huge tropical fruit. He did crazy things, suddenly
his programme was a success!
In 2010, Jared had a very serious accident, he broke his leg and he cut his arm
very badly, a helicopter took him to hospital. He spent three months in hospital. Did he
stop his programme? Not, of course, he loves his job!
* Taken from the book Stepping Up 1, by Nick Beare, Macmillan.
- Now you’re going to work in pairs. Look at the questions I wrote on the board about
the text and answer them.
a. When did Jared make his first TV programme?
b. Was that programme successful?
c. What did Jared eat?
d. How much time did he spend in hospital?
Activity 2 (20’)
- Now you’re going to work in groups of four. Imagine that last summer you went to
Europe with your friends, and then write a text, about 100 words, about that holiday.
Try to use the verbs that we are learning, remember ate, drank, went, saw, made, took,
spent, etc. Then you’ll read it to the rest of the class.
Activity 3 (15’)
- Now we’re going to work in pairs, I’ll give each of you a copy of a chart. What you
have to do is to find what your mate did last Monday that was holiday. You have only
the first question, then you must think and write five more, and then ask them to your
mate and write down his answer.

5. Activity 4 (12’)
- Well, now we are going to talk about our real holidays. I want you to tell the class
where you went, who you went with, what you ate, if you spent time with friends or
family, if you talked to local people, if you had any incident, if you drank something
new, etc. Who wants to start? The rest of you feel free to ask questions about the
holidays to the mate that is speaking.
Closure (3’)
- Ok, that’s it for today. However, for next class you’ll have homework. You have to
design a word search, and the words to be found are saw, went, ate, spent, took, did, cut,
made, broke , swam, bought, slept and sang. The size of the square must be 15 files and
15 columns. See you next time! Good bye!
