Bandwidth
 Unit 210 – Lesson 3
Lesson Goals
 Understand the meaning of bandwidth

 Know the effect bandwidth can have on interactive multimedia products

 Be able to describe limitations caused by bandwidth

                                                            #bandwidth #limit
                                                            #multimedia
What is Bandwidth?
Think of where you have heard of it before…
Understand meaning of bandwidth
Bandwidth Be able to describe limitations

 This is a measure of how much data can be used
within a second e.g. Kilobytes per second or
    Megabytes per second.

 Sometimes people want to look at lots of data at
    once, especially with interactive multimedia
products. This might include text, videos, images,
    animation and sound.

 Bandwidth is often restricted to only allow so much
data to filter though at a time and this is when you
might find that some products run slowly.
                                                               #bandwidth #limit
                                                               #multimedia

Bandwidth Be able to describe limitations

 Download times for Virgin Media:

                    30mb 60mb 100mb
    Album 18 sec 9 sec 6 sec
TV Show 102 sec 54 sec 30 sec
    Movie 5 mins 2.5 mins 1.5 mins
HD Movie 20 mins 10 mins 6 mins

 The larger the connection size the faster the
    download will occur.

 Bandwidth can be throttled to prevent further #bandwidth #limit
    downloads from taking place.
                                                                 #multimedia

Your Task Be able to describe limitations

 Research and explain the following:
                (Under Bandwidth heading)
                 What does bandwidth mean?
 What are the limitations of small bandwidth?

                                              #bandwidth #limit
                                              #multimedia
Key Words

 Bandwidth  The measure of how much data is allowed
                       along a connection every second

 Limit  The point beyond which something may not go
                       any further

 Multimedia  A product that combines various types of
media such as images, audio, video etc.
