KINEMATICSANDFORCES
GOALSFORTHESEMESTER
- The course will be divided into two sections
1. Kinematics (The Physics of Motion)
2. Forces (Uses Newton’s Laws
- Algebra and a little Calculus will be used
FLOWOFEACHDAY
1. I will test your recall abilities (this means quiz!)
2. We will talk about a famous person in physics
- We will also look at the math that the physicist used
3. We will cover the math needed for the physics of the day
4. Cover the physics concepts and apply the math!
- What is a function?
- This is very important
- What is a derivative?
- What are two examples of derivative?
- What is the relationship between:
1. Position
2. Velocity
3. Acceleration

ONE RULE - IF THE NUMBER IN FRONT OF
THE T IS ONE MORE THAN THE POWER
THEN - COPY AND PASTE THE NUMBER IN
FRONT OF THE T AND PASTE IT IN THE
POWER (UP TOP AND TO THE RIGHT OF
THE T)
- Coined the term ‘black hole’
- Pioneer of the search for a quantum
theory of gravity
- Co-author of the standard textbook
on Einstein's general theory of
relativity
- If I can't picture it, I can't understand
it
- e entered Johns Hopkins University
at the age of 16 and emerged with a
PhD in physics six years later.

GENERALRELATIVITY
MATHFORPHYSICS
- Let’s go back to talking about a function
- A function has two parts:
1. A dependent variable - Changes because of other variable!
2. An independent variable - isn’t changed by other variables!
f(x) = 2 + x
y = 2 + x
Dependent variable
Independent variable
LET’SDOSOMEEXAMPLES
KINEMATICS
- The three main variables for kinematics are:
1. Displacement - (This is kinda like distance)
2. Velocity - (When things are moving they have velocity)
3. Acceleration - (When you smell freshly baked muffins and you go
from sitting [no velocity] to 90mph [a lot of velocity])
- We will get more physics-e definitions later in this discussion
- All of these variables give a lot of information to an object in motion!
- For example,
- Stewy accelerated from rest to a velocity of 5 mph over a distance of 10 miles.
- This example fully describes Stewy in motion
- However, most of the time, we are not given all the information.
- Most of the time we only have a few pieces of information
KINEMATICS
LET’SGOTHROUGHOURVARIABLES
- Our variables are
-
-
-
-
-
- You might already know most of these!
- Displacement might sound a little weird
- Let’s look at some examples of displacement
d = displacement
vi = initial velocity
vf = final velocity
a = acceleration
t = time
THEBIGFOUR!
d = vit +

v2
f = v2
i + 2ad
vf = vi + at
d =
vi + vf

t
- Each of these four equations describes the mathematical relationship between the
variables of motion
- How do you begin to solve these types of problems?
1. Draw a picture of the problem
2. Make a list of all the variables you do know
3. Choose the equation that has the variables you know
4. Put in the numbers and calculate!
- One important thing that many students miss is units.
- Let’s take a second to think about units and conversions
THEBIGFOUREQUATIONS
CANIMULTIPLY:
?3 hrs × 3 seconds
YOU CAN NOT DO THIS. WE NEED TO CONVERT TO THE SAME UNITS.
1 hr = 60 min
1 min = 60 sec
LET’S LOOK AT HOW TO DO THIS!
EXAMPLE
Blimpy is driving his car for . He starts driving at . He
speeds up with at a rate of .
What is Blimpy’s final velocity?
2 hours 11 mph
10 mph2
EXAMPLE
A baseball player runs from third base to home plate. He starts from
rest at third base. He accelerates at a rate of . It takes him
to make it to home plate.
How far was third base from the home plate?
7 mph2
10 seconds
EXAMPLE
A baseball player runs from third base to home plate. He starts from
rest at third base. His final velocity is . It takes him
to make it to home plate.
How far was third base from the home plate?
12 mph 10 seconds

Lesson 1 Kinematic Equations

  • 2. GOALSFORTHESEMESTER - The course will be divided into two sections 1. Kinematics (The Physics of Motion) 2. Forces (Uses Newton’s Laws - Algebra and a little Calculus will be used
  • 3. FLOWOFEACHDAY 1. I will test your recall abilities (this means quiz!) 2. We will talk about a famous person in physics - We will also look at the math that the physicist used 3. We will cover the math needed for the physics of the day 4. Cover the physics concepts and apply the math!
  • 4. - What is a function? - This is very important - What is a derivative? - What are two examples of derivative? - What is the relationship between: 1. Position 2. Velocity 3. Acceleration RECALLTIME Input Function Output
  • 5. MAKINGTHECONNECTIONS Acceleration Position Speed Take a derivative Take a derivative Take a anti-derivative Take a anti-derivative
  • 6. x = t3 dx dt = d dt (t3 ) v = 3t2 dv dt = d dt (3t2 ) a = 2 × 3t a = 6t x = t5 dx dt = d dt (t5 ) v = 5t4 dv dt = d dt (5t4 ) a = 4 × 5t3 a = 20t3
  • 7. ∫ 2tdt = t2 REMEMBER, THE DT AT THE END IS JUST SOMETHING WE PUT THERE! IT DOESN’T REALLY DO ANYTHING. ∫ 3t2 dt = t3 ∫ 300t299 dt = t300 ONE RULE - IF THE NUMBER IN FRONT OF THE T IS ONE MORE THAN THE POWER THEN - COPY AND PASTE THE NUMBER IN FRONT OF THE T AND PASTE IT IN THE POWER (UP TOP AND TO THE RIGHT OF THE T)
  • 8. - Coined the term ‘black hole’ - Pioneer of the search for a quantum theory of gravity - Co-author of the standard textbook on Einstein's general theory of relativity - If I can't picture it, I can't understand it - e entered Johns Hopkins University at the age of 16 and emerged with a PhD in physics six years later. JOHNWHEELER AWESOME PHYSICIST TIME IS WHAT PREVENTS EVERYTHING FROM HAPPENING AT ONCE.
  • 9. Gαβ = 8πG c4 Tαβ Tells space how to curve Distribution of mass/ energy C is speed of light G is gravitation constant GENERALRELATIVITY
  • 10. MATHFORPHYSICS - Let’s go back to talking about a function - A function has two parts: 1. A dependent variable - Changes because of other variable! 2. An independent variable - isn’t changed by other variables! f(x) = 2 + x y = 2 + x Dependent variable Independent variable
  • 12. KINEMATICS - The three main variables for kinematics are: 1. Displacement - (This is kinda like distance) 2. Velocity - (When things are moving they have velocity) 3. Acceleration - (When you smell freshly baked muffins and you go from sitting [no velocity] to 90mph [a lot of velocity]) - We will get more physics-e definitions later in this discussion
  • 13. - All of these variables give a lot of information to an object in motion! - For example, - Stewy accelerated from rest to a velocity of 5 mph over a distance of 10 miles. - This example fully describes Stewy in motion - However, most of the time, we are not given all the information. - Most of the time we only have a few pieces of information KINEMATICS
  • 14. LET’SGOTHROUGHOURVARIABLES - Our variables are - - - - - - You might already know most of these! - Displacement might sound a little weird - Let’s look at some examples of displacement d = displacement vi = initial velocity vf = final velocity a = acceleration t = time
  • 15. THEBIGFOUR! d = vit + 1 2 at2 v2 f = v2 i + 2ad vf = vi + at d = vi + vf 2 t
  • 16. - Each of these four equations describes the mathematical relationship between the variables of motion - How do you begin to solve these types of problems? 1. Draw a picture of the problem 2. Make a list of all the variables you do know 3. Choose the equation that has the variables you know 4. Put in the numbers and calculate! - One important thing that many students miss is units. - Let’s take a second to think about units and conversions THEBIGFOUREQUATIONS
  • 17. CANIMULTIPLY: ?3 hrs × 3 seconds YOU CAN NOT DO THIS. WE NEED TO CONVERT TO THE SAME UNITS. 1 hr = 60 min 1 min = 60 sec LET’S LOOK AT HOW TO DO THIS!
  • 18. EXAMPLE Blimpy is driving his car for . He starts driving at . He speeds up with at a rate of . What is Blimpy’s final velocity? 2 hours 11 mph 10 mph2
  • 19. EXAMPLE A baseball player runs from third base to home plate. He starts from rest at third base. He accelerates at a rate of . It takes him to make it to home plate. How far was third base from the home plate? 7 mph2 10 seconds
  • 20. EXAMPLE A baseball player runs from third base to home plate. He starts from rest at third base. His final velocity is . It takes him to make it to home plate. How far was third base from the home plate? 12 mph 10 seconds
