2. POP QUIZ TIME
• What does the symbol for a resistor look
like? You can say it in words.
• What is thermodynamics?
• What is electricity?
3. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (REVIEW)
• What is environmental
sciences?
Well, we will talk about how
hoomans (cat spelling) have
impacted the world.
• An easy example is
buildings.
1. When dug up the
materials needed
2. Cleared a place to build
3. Built a building
4. WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY BAD?
GREEN HOUSE GASES
• Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere
are greenhouse gases.
They let sunlight pass through the
atmosphere, but they prevent the heat
that the sunlight brings from leaving the
atmosphere.
• They get their name from greenhouses.
A greenhouse is full of windows that let
in sunlight. That sunlight creates
warmth. The big trick of a greenhouse is
that it doesn’t let that warmth escape.
5. GREENHOUSE GASES
• Overall, greenhouse gases are a
good thing.
• Without them, our planet would
be too cold, and life as we know
it would not exist.
• But there can be too much of a
good thing.
• Scientists are worried that human
activities are adding too much of
these gases to the atmosphere.
6. THE HEATING OF THE EARTH IMPACTS MANY
DIFFERENT THINGS!!!
8. HOT HOT SUMMERS
• Last year’s summer was so warm
• 600 billion tons of ice melted from Greenland – enough to raise
global sea levels by 2.2 mm in just two months, new research has
found.
9. BLUE WHALE SCIENCE
Just so you can picture this:
A blue whale weighs 115 tons.
The amount out melted ice put into the ocean by rising sea levels
is equal to the weight of 5,217,391,304 blue whales (over 5 billion
blue whales)
10. WOW. JUST WOW
• The ice that melted into the ocean is the weight of 300 billion
Ferrari’s
11. GREENLAND’S ICE
• Because the ice is melting into the
Ocean, it raises the Earth’s sea levels.
• This can cause all those fun beaches to
flood!
• Now, this will take time to flood the
beaches like the pictures, but it will
happen
12. NO SALT WATER TAFFY…..NOOOO!
• Then, all those stores won’t be able
to sell the most delicious yummy
amazing incredible spectacular
fantastic amazing…said that already
CANDY.
• Many stores near the shore could
close down.
• So there is a domino effect
Who knows what a domino effect
is?
14. GREENHOUSE GASES AND GREENLAND
• The Earth can heat up because of __________
• Because the earth is heating up it can _________ from Greenland.
• Because the _________ melts from Greenland,
the beaches will __________.
• If the beaches ________, then, there will be no more _______ made:(
15. REMEMBER, THE BEACHES FLOODING WILL
TAKE YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS AND
YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS
AND YEARS….YOU GET THE POINT
16. ANOTHER EFFECT OF SEA LEVEL RISE
• The sea water has salt
• Hoomans cannot drink salt water
• But if the oceans rise the salt water gets into our drinking water!
18. BUT PHYSICS CAN HELP!
• Remember that I said salt water is
conductive!!!!
• So, we if we create a strong current
in the water, then we can see how
much salt is in the water.
• High conductivity means a lot of
salt!
• Or, over time we can measure how
much salt water is mixing with our
fresh water!!!
This was my face when I learned this!
19. HOW DO MAGNETS MAKE AN ELECTRICAL CURRENT
• Magnets are used to make electricity.
• Moving magnetic fields pull and push electrons.
• Metals such as copper and aluminum have electrons that are
loosely held.
• Moving a magnet around a coil of wire, or moving a coil of wire
around a magnet, pushes the electrons in the wire and creates an
electrical current.
• Induced Current
20. REVIEW
• Green house gases can heat up the earth
• Heating of the earth will melt ice
• Melting ice can lead to sea level rise
• Sea level rise cause beaches flooding and salt water in our
drinking water
• Physics can help by inducing currents in the water/beaches to see
how much salt is invading the fresh drinking water
