This document describes a problem definition tool to help clarify priorities and focus on critical issues. The tool involves working through a worksheet individually or in a team to examine a problem from multiple angles. It structures the analysis of a problem in a way that efficiently compares issues and looks at deeper underlying problems rather than surface symptoms. Using the tool with stakeholders can provide different perspectives and lead to reframing problems in a manner that offers clues for effective solutions.

Ideas have been the driving force of humanity. From a simple circular wheel carved from rock back in the stone ages to the first airplanes and telephones, innovative ideas have sparked off revolutionary changes in society. Now in this competitive world, ideas have become more important to us than actions. Companies have begun asking designers to generate solutions that meet the needs and desires of the consumer.
As such, there was a need to streamline and increase the efficiency of producing and sharing ideas within teams. This gave birth to several idea generation techniques, which allowed everyone to play a part in the creative process, a role allotted strictly to designers and engineers for the last few years.
Idea generation techniques meant anyone could participate in creating new ideas. It allowed people to share and build up on existing solutions, to foresee future problems, and essentially, to think big in terms of design. It brought different specializations together to create a more diverse think-tank that can tackle problems from several perspectives.
This report is divided into three parts.
First, we shall look into several idea generation techniques, both popular ones and the uncommon ones, question their uses and value by providing examples of products developed using the specific techniques.
Second, we discuss whether idea generation methods and techniques are important in coming up with new ideas? Are they the driving factor in generating ideas?
Lastly, we conclude with our personal view on idea generation techniques, along with stating which methods, if any, would we prefer to use.
Towards the end we aim to achieve a better understand of the creative thinking process as a whole and how to effectively solve all issues, design or otherwise.

Bilbao Innovation Park in collaboration with Oberri and the Global Innovation Academy has organized this training on Innovation and Design Thinking in Health, Healthcare and Wellness. Dates are 1-3 July 2012 and it will take place in Bilbao.
We need to create a shared understanding of what problems we are trying to solve, what strategic choices we are trying to make, and what questions we are trying to answer before we can choose what tools, frameworks, and methods are more practical to facilitate the discussions required to answer these questions.
I hope that you design your own workbook and visual management boards. Making this process your own is how the work is enabled. Most people take a course and download the software or the workbook and try to apply without going through the necessary steps to learn the process. I hope that you have started your experiment, your PDCA cycle in adding these thoughts to your toolbox and the way you do your work. There is a Slideshare presentation on the workbook using this slide deck.

Whether it’s a complex or even a simple project or any piece of work for that matter there will be people who are interested in it to one degree or another. These people are your stakeholders. But what are stakeholders? Stakeholders come in all shapes and sizes and the level of interest they have in your piece of work, or maybe you would like them to have in your piece of work, is one way to categorize them. Their ability to influence your work either positively or adversely is another way of categorizing them.
Who Are Your Stakeholders?
Understanding your stakeholders requires that you know who they are in the first place. Anyone who has an interest in, either directly or indirectly, the successful completion of your piece of work or project is a stakeholder. Those people or groups and companies who are closely involved are obvious but others who maybe don’t have any direct contact with your work in other parts of your organization may well be a stakeholder too.
For ‘people’ you also need to read ‘group’, ‘department’ or ‘company’ as it may not be a particular individual you can identify at this stage. One group of stakeholders that can often be forgotten is customers, the whole reason why your work is being undertaken in the first place.
Where Are Your Stakeholders?
The simple answer to this question is they fall into two groups; those that are internal to your company or organization and those that are external to it. Actually where you draw the boundary is not important in identifying stakeholders, it merely helps in the thought process of ensuring you have identified them to start with. Where it becomes more important is in how you communicate with your stakeholders as there may be organizational requirements overlaid on you for interacting with external stakeholders.
Why Should You Be Interested In Stakeholders?
Put simply, if you aren’t then there is a strong possibility that one of the more influential stakeholders will cause you problems and potentially prevent you from succeeding in your piece of work or project.
So, having identified them you need to determine which ones are likely to be supportive of your work, advocates even, and which ones may block or delay you. One way of bringing this all together is in the form of a Stakeholder Mapping, a simple two-by-two matrix of Power (ability to support or de-rail your work) verses Interest (in your work) each scored Low to High. A project sponsor who controls the budget will naturally have both high power and interest whereas an individual within an unrelated department is likely to have low power and low interest.

Demographic transference within organizations is shifting and there will continue to be an upsurge of more diverse and inclusive organizations as they outperform homogeneous organizations. But this is a slow progression, where can we start making organizational transformation now? We can start from the bottom; employees have more power than they may realize, to affect change. And although this may seem like a daunting call-to-action, employees have the power irrespective of budget or team size, to make an indelible impact on organizational change. Like many effectual grassroots movements, employees have the ability to create a new model that renders the existing model obsolete and lead the evolution of organizational transformation.

Defining a problem is a deceptively simple task - what at first
seems to be the problem is often merely a symptom of a deeper
problem. This tool works to both open a problem up - present-
ing it in a way that can be examined from a number of angles - as
well as helping to define the wider context and associated issues
involved.
This is particularly effective when trying to focus a team of people
on the key problems at hand. This tool has been designed to struc-
ture the analysis of a particular problem in a way that makes good
use of your time. It introduces a small set of key criteria by which
an issue can be articulated and assessed, which makes the activity
highly efficient. It also gives you a standardised way to compare
several different problems which might seem to be very different
on the surface.
What is it &
why should
I do it?
?HOW TO USE IT
Go through the Problem Definition worksheet individually or in
small teams and reflect on a specific issue you have identified,
exchanging thoughts while writing down your notes. The key aim
here is to capture, compare and discuss different viewpoints on
the problem. You can then review the notes and discuss with
your team members whether you are making the same assump-
tions, and whether you are framing things in the same way.
This exercise may lead you to ‘reframe’ the problem you ini-
tially addressed – for example, what happens if you see older
people as having capacities, rather than needs? Reframing
problems in such a way can offer clues to how the solution can
take shape.
Working on a Problem Definition worksheet with not only your
team members, but together with other stakeholders will usually
bring up new contexts. For instance, working with service users,
staff or volunteers may provide a slightly different angle to the
tool than when working with managers or entrepreneurs. Feel
free to experiment and rephrase questions in the worksheet to
keep them relevant in such situations.
