Thorndike developed the theory of learning by trial and error based on experiments with animals. He found that animals learn through repeated attempts to solve problems, rejecting unsuccessful responses and retaining those that are rewarded. For example, in one experiment a cat was placed in a box and had to press a lever to escape and access food outside. Through many attempts, the cat learned that pressing the lever opened the door and it could eat. Thorndike concluded that learning occurs through forming associations between stimuli and responses, and identified laws of learning including the law of effect, law of readiness, and law of exercise.
