PETER HALL
Head of Learning and Development –
Australia and Asia Pacific at QBE

2016 Observations
• The challenge to do more with less becomes
even more ‘the new normal’
• If we thought technology might go away – it’s
impacting learning even more
• I don’t think we still have the right skills
• What’s happened to pure design roles
• We need to be all-rounders
Predictions for 2017
• Be ready to challenge your
long established paradigms –
be a heretic
• L&D people need to be
pragmatists
• Get serious about broad L&D
capability development
• F2F will continue to reduce
• More (and more) video
Reflections on what I’ve learned in 2016
• Stakeholder engagement is the key
• Don’t be limited by your
uncomfortableness
• Continue to educate the business using
their language but also push it
• Share your knowledge with others

Leader – Information
Management at NSW Department of
Education

L&D Skills are quickly becoming specialised …… and
irrelevant at times
• Due to shift in economic models and
employment growth and technology impacts on
industries
• Disruption will continue which will force new
curriculum
• We need skills to deal with the requirements
organisations need and especially to deal with
disruption
• They will need them at twice the speed
• Need agile models of delivery and refocussed
effort on how we support learning transfer
• We should not have L&D where it is not
required
• Focus should be on the 70 of the 70:20:10
• Leadership is the final bastion of L&D that will
resist change.

Projected employment growth –
five years to November 2020
Source: Australian Government Industry Employment Projections; 2016 Report’ Release date: March 2016
The commentary on the numbers
• The Department of Employment projects
employment to increase by 989,700 (or 8.3
per cent) by November 2020.
• Employment is projected to increase in 16 of
the 19 broad industries over the five years to
November 2020,
• The long term structural shift in employment
towards services industries is projected to
continue over the coming five years.
• Largest contribution to employment growth
• Health Care and Social Assistance
(+250,200), followed by
• Professional, Scientific and Technical
Services (151,200),
• Education and Training (121,700) and
Retail Trade (106,000).
• Declines in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing,
Mining and Manufacturing
So what?
15 years ago eLearning was just beginning and now the future will be “learning
experiences” driven by the employee choice. L&D functions don’t have the capability
and could be left behind. Outsourced models of expertise can replace L&D now.

We Need New Skills
Organisations need new Curricula
• Search and 'find' skills for finding the right
information and “trusted” information when
it's needed
• Critical thinking skills to extract meaning and
significance
• Creative & design thinking skills to generate
new ideas
• Analytical skills for solving problems and
making decisions
• Networking skills to identify and build
relationships with others who are potential
sources of knowledge and expertise, within
and outside the organisation
• People skills to build trust and productive
relationships that are mutually beneficial for
information sharing
• Reason and argument using data to extract
meaning and significance
• The ability to validate data and the underlying
assumptions on which information and
knowledge is based.
