The Influence Of Tax Credits
The Influence of Tax Credits The impetus behind the tax credits appears to be two fold. As taxpayers
work to improve energy efficiency, decreasing usage, and lessening the environmental impact of their
daily activities, they may receive financial rewards based on their actions. The offer of tax credits is an
attempt to achieve a certain behavior from the consumer. However, two important things must take
place before the consumer takes action. First, the consumer must be aware that a tax credit is
available. Sales are highly publicized, but publicity relating to tax credits is limited. Once the
consumer is made aware of a tax credit, they must view the tax credit as a reduction in price, but a tax
credit is much more complicated with several caveats. Environmental tax credits offered by various
levels of government are extremely popular with both the governing bodies and those who benefit
from the credits. Government is seen as taking a positive step not only towards improving the
environment, but reducing the United States dependency on fuel from other countries which in turn
allows for greater security. Tax credits allow the individual or business to decide how to spend their
money and the financial benefit of a particular behavior. The financial benefit may be in the form of
reduced operating costs or taxes. However a closer look at eco friendly tax credits for the individual
consumer points to a class discrepancy. These tax credits require an initial and

A Brief Note On Tobacco Control Measures Were Challenged...
II. Tobacco control measures were challenged in the WTO 1. Measures relating to provisions of the
GATT 1994
WTO members might impose tariff and non tariff measures on tobacco products when these products
are imported to their territories. However, by the three critical principles, which are mentioned in the
previous part, the GATT 1994 prevents WTO members from measures establishing discrimination and
trade restriction. Therefore, in boundary measures imposed on tobacco products might be challenged
under these principles.
In Dominican Republic Measures Affecting the Importation and Internal Seal of Cigarettes in 2004,
Honduras submitted its request to establish proceedings in the framework of the WTO to claim that
measures, which the Dominican Republic imposed on imported cigarettes, did not comply with some
provisions of the GATT 1994.
1.1. Transition surcharge and foreign exchange fee
The Dominican Republic imposed a transition surcharge on all imported products, including
cigarettes. The amount of the surcharge is 2 percent of the cost, insurance and freight value of the
imported good . Importers had to pay extra 10 percent of value of the products imported to the
Dominican Republic at the selling rate for foreign exchange in the this country. Honduras claimed that
these surcharge and fee did not comply with Article II:1(b) of the GATT 1994.
The Panel noted that the surcharge and fee:
(i) were additional charges of imported taxes. Thus, they were in boundary

Argument Wellness
According to Maritain, the individual is a complex entity that holds the desires and wants of the
human being, and is willed to the universe for its own sake and stability. The person requires
community to manifest dignity, and seeks acknowledgement for who we are, and what we are, as
humans, and it allows for preferences of each being as it evolves. Because people have inherent good
in their essence, and, according to the encyclicals, are created in God s image, the good is capable of
transcending anything a political system has created. The good of the human being is above the
combined good of the physical universe because God became us, and so our goodness is above
anything and everything else. This inherent goodness that is within the being

1999, and their manufacture were the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. The length was 107 5 and the
length of the nose probe was 4 11 . The SR 71 had a wing span of 55 7 and also, a wing area of 1,795

inboard elevon area of 39.00 ft. sq. The height of the SR 71 is 18 6 and has a maximum weight of
170,000 lbs. The SR 71 at high speeds and altitudes causes friction to heat up the metal skin to 400
degrees Fahrenheit. The pressure suits that the crew wears are suits that are the same as astronauts or
suits worn to space shuttle missions. The only aircraft that can catch up close to the SR 71 is the MiG
25 Foxbat and it can only be on Mach 3 up to a few seconds. To withstand the friction heat at Mach 3,
they built the SR 71 s airframe. It is covered in 90 percent of titanium alloy. The Blackbird always
runs on JP7 fuel, which is full of low volatility. They gave the SR 71 many nicknames such as: Habu ,

Similar Ideas Presented in Blade Runner by Ridley Scott...
Bound by different contexts, authors often use a popular medium in order to depict the discontent of
the ideas of society. This is evident in the module Texts in Time; as Blade Runner, having been written
more than one hundred years after Frankenstein is still able to reflect the ideas proposed in the latter.
Blade Runner by Ridley Scott deals with the effects of globalisation and consumerism during 1980 s.
Alternatively, the epistolary novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley deals with the kinship to the natural
world set in the Romantic Era and enlightenment period. However Blade Runner, although subjected
by a different context, also portrays a similar idea to Frankenstein; the fear of science and technology
coupled with the value of the definition of a human. Through this commonality, we are able to utilise
the values of Blade Runner in order to truly understand Shelley s purpose.
During the 1980 s, the increasing amount of industrialisation brought about a new period in time, the
Industrial Revolution. Literally revolutionising the world, the Industrial Revolution changed the way
the world was perceived, no longer an agricultural based society but instead one overrun with
globalisation and consumerism. Scott portrays this in an overindulged manner, looking at the extreme
effects to long time globalisation and consumerism. As depicted in the film, the city is subject to a
constant downpour of rain surrounded by numerous skyscrapers that effectively block out the view of

Analysis Of Angels Displaying The Crown Of Thorns
There are several miniatures in particular that are meant to evoke piety, for Anne, as well as that which
she hoped her son would display, in time. Angels Displaying the Crown of Thorns (Fol. 30r) depicts
two angels reverently holding a golden crown of thorns, referencing that worn by Christ. In Angels
Displaying the Eucharist in a Monstrance (Fol. 11v), four angels carefully hold a monstrance, a device
by which the Host of communion could be displayed for worship and respectful contemplation. These
angels are in a similar setting and arrangement to those holding the crown of thorns, and both images
share the same main purpose, as well: to have two extra sections of this prayer book inadvertently
dedicated towards recalling the Passion of Christ. There are also some other possible implied
purposes, though. The inclusion of the crown of thorns in one folio serves as a reminder of the fact
that Anne had privileged access to Sainte Chapelle, which she undoubtedly took advantage of, built by
Louis IX following his obtainment of the Crown of Thorns, as a place in which to house it, along with
other such articles. Her piety is thus re emphasised through yet another display of devotion for her son
to follow. In a similar manner, the monstrance, an object of great importance to the devout, would
serve the same purpose. Yet, there is also the sense that Anne is showcasing the opulent objects at her
disposal, for the crown of thorns was certainly not a replaceable, nor common,

family member asked if he really did it. When he finally told her he did not do it, it was only then that
things turned around for them. It s sad that justice was not served for these 2 men. The police saw an
opportunity to deceive 2 young black males and they felt compelled or even tricked to confess to a
crime they did not commit. You will see in the case files below on how the bodies were discovered.

On June 18, 1992, after a night out in the West Village, Wilson and Yarbough returned home to Coney
Island. Wilson went to sleep at a friend s while Yarbough went home to find the bodies of his mother,
Annie Yarbough, his 12 year old sister, Chavonn Barnes, and a friend, 12 year old Latasha Knox. As

had been choked to death with electrical cords and stabbed multiple times. The two girls had been
partially undressed. Annie was a heroin addict and witnesses told police about a parade of drug users
who came in and out of the apartment that night. One of them, the witnesses told police, threatened

History of the West Nile Virus Essay
History of the West Nile Virus
Abstract
West Nile virus (WNV) is a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. It has been found in humans,
birds, and other animals, typically in Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. In 1999, WNV was
detected in the United States for the first time, and since then it has spread across the U.S. According
to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 15,000 people in the U.S. have
tested positive for the WNV infection since 1999, including over 500 deaths. Many more people have
likely been infected with WNV, but have experienced mild or no symptoms.
What is the history of the West Nile virus? West Nile virus is an emerging infectious disease that can
cause encephalitis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because New York City is such a huge port of entry into this country, it was suggested that WNV
came from a bird smuggled into the US from Africa or Asia. Since then, WNV has spread to 48 states,
and to Canada and Mexico. Ever since the outbreak in New York till now there where 15,000 people
in the U.S. that tested positive for WNV infection. The virus has probably spread to the east through
the west by migrating birds that have the virus.
West Nile virus exists in nature through a transmission cycle involving mosquitoes and birds.
Mosquitoes become infected with West Nile virus when they feed on infected birds, which may carry
the virus in their blood for a few days. Infected mosquitoes can then transmit West Nile virus to
humans and animals when biting to take a blood meal. In rare instances, West Nile virus may be
transmitted from human to human through organ donation or blood transfusion or from pregnant
mother to fetus. These new modes or transmission are still under investigation.
People typically develop symptoms 3 to 15 days after they are bitten by an infected mosquito. WNV
affects the central nervous system in the body, however, symptoms vary. Less than one percent (about
one in 150 people) of individuals infected with WNV will develop severe illness. The severe
symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors,
convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness

Review Of Margaret Atwood s Bluebeard s Egg
Revision of Bluebeard : An analysis of Margaret Atwood s Bluebeard s Egg
Margaret Atwood s short story, Bluebeard s Egg is a contemporary retelling of the original story
Bluebeard that is written by Charles Perrault. Atwood s revision differs from the traditional tale of
Bluebeard in that it takes place in a modern day setting instead of a fantastical environment, it lacks
magical elements and it is a narrative that is told through the third person point of view instead of
omniscient. Bluebeard s Egg explores the themes of, infidelity, ingenuity, concealment, and curiosity
by shifting the fairy tale into a modern, middle classed environment so her readers can find it more
relatable.
Bluebeard s Egg is told in a third person point of view in order to expose Sally s mental movements
which she has concealed through images of fairy tales and happily ever afters. She wants to replace
her normal, non romantic life with her husband Ed to a fantastical one where she is the princess
(Atwood 772). Shuli Barzilai notes the difference in the narrative perspectives between the two
literary texts: Instead of the omniscience of most fairy tale narrators, Atwood uses restricted internal
focalization (192). The comment about internal focalization indicates that Sally is the main focus of
the story. Since Ed never articulates his point of view Sally s statement of Ed being stupid is biased.
On the other hand, in Bluebeard the story is told through an omniscient point of

Characteristics Of The Biochar Derived From Pine Fruit...
Characteristics of the biochar
The characteristics of the biochar derived from pine fruit residue are shown in Table 1. The adsorptive
properties of sorbent are greatly dependent on their particle size and distribution throughout the mass.
Effective size and uniformity coefficient are the two important parameters for treatment of
contaminated water using adsorbent as filtering media in column operation where control of particle
size is critical. The effective size corresponds to the sieve size through which 10% of the material will
pass, and the uniformity coefficient is the ratio of the sieve size that will just pass 60% of the material
to the effective size. Generally, the rate of adsorption get enhanced as the particle size decreases due
availability of increased surface area. Therefore, the adsorbent with smaller effective sizes provide
better adsorption capacity due to better the access to the surface area and faster the rate of adsorption.
The typical range of effective size and uniformity coefficient for activated carbon as adsorbent media
practiced satisfactory is D10 = 0.15 0.35 mm and Cu = 2 3 respectively. In our case, Table 1 shows
that the biochar prepared have an effective size of 0.055 mm and uniformity coefficient 2.87. The
more uniform adsorbent media is expected to provide the slower head loss buildup and therefore,
careful consideration of particle sized distribution is must for dynamic column design.
The Cd(II) adsorption capacity of biochar depends upon

Mad Max Road Warrior And Warrior Road Analysis
Mad Max; Road Warrior and Fury Road are Australian dystopian films directed by George Miller. The
two films were released, with 34 years between them, allowing the audience to explore the different
representations of stereotypes and ideologies in each time period. To a certain extent, the characters in
each film contrast with one another, displaying a change in social and political context, specifically
with the concept of feminism. This is due to the changes of media content as society has progressed.
The 1980 s was a time for womens liberation, to a large extent there was a change in the areas of,
health, work, law, education and welfare, redressing the issues of equality in Australia. Planned

Big Rebecca does not reinforce the stereotype, she is an elderly women yet seen as a figure of
importance. Her ideas and blessings are considered by the tribe as she is the voice of reason and
promotes to save her tribe from Lord Humungus . The Women Warrior challenges and reinforces the
representation of a female in a action film. A attractive, fierce, well equipped young woman who stays
moral to her tribe. In the first scene in which features the Women Warrior, it is evident she is
disappointed in the actions of Max when he demands for oil, she tells the leader give him nothing
turning to Max and says trading human flesh, you must be trash . The woman warrior is seen as
vigorous yet this differs when she is murdered by an arrow in the chest, slumping over maxes car in
the battle against the enemy. The Women s liberation did contribute to the content of media in the
1980 s, although the ideology of men being superior and more dominant were still there, evident
through the character of Max.
In todays society, the second wave of feminism develops and the way in which society perceives and
understand it has shifted to becoming a trend . Yet, today we see the most amount of change in history.

Surface Segregation And Formation Of Silver Nanoparticles...
Surface Segregation and Formation of Silver Nanoparticles Created
In situ in Polyvinyl alcohol Films.
1 Introduction.
Preparation, characterization, and physical properties of a nanostructured materials of silver
(nanoparticles and nanocomposites) have been the subject of various researcher in many scientific
laboratories during the past years for many studies and it has been also established that size, stability,
color, shape, and properties depend on the method of preparation (radiation, photochemical,
electrochemical, and chemical) as well as experimental factors such as [reactants], [stabilizer and/or
capping agents], temperature, order of mixing of reactants, presence of stabilizers and capping agents
and even on the addition rate of reducing agents [1 12].
The properties of such nanocomposites can further be improved through various treatments like,
annealing, UV irradiation and Gamma irradiation is one of the extensively used tools to alter the
structural, optical properties [13, 14], Many of reports were used gamma irradiation to synthesis the
Ag nanoparticles in PVA [15,16], and the other literature were prepared Ag PVA nanocomposite films
and then irradiated with gamma at doses (25, 50, 75, 100 KGy) [17]. According to this literature the
absorption peak intensity at 427 nm for silver nanoparticles is increased with increasing the gamma
doses, until the higher doses 100 KGy, its decrease and the reason for this behaviour at higher doses

The Repercussions Of Ignorance In The Chrysalids By John...
The Repercussions of Ignorance Martin Luther King said, Nothing in all the world is more dangerous
than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity (Bell). The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is set in
the future after an apocalyptic event known as Tribulation, causing a lack of knowledge of the past.
The main community, Waknuk, is prejudiced and ignorant. The narrator, David, recalls the unfolding
of the dangerous predicament caused by his society s ignorance. In this novel, the author presents that
ignorance results in adversity and ultimately, a society s downfall. The Waknukians ignorance creates
a hostile environment, causes disagreement, and is the agent of their own defeat.
The Waknukians ignorance leads to their abomination of Mutants, creating a very hostile environment.
Their ignorance and lack of knowledge cause them to rely on the only remains of the Old People and
are used for direction in their lives. When speaking of Nicholson s Repentances David says, Frequent
references to these texts had made me familiar with the words long before I was able to read, in fact I
am not sure that they did not give me my first reading lessons. I knew them by heart, just as I knew
others elsewhere in the house, which said things like: THE NORM IS THE WILL OF GOD (18). This
represents the environment that the Waknukians are exposed to early in life, and this is evident when
David says that he was familiar with the words long before [he] was able to read. It shows how
significant these morals are to the Waknukians, and how in the absence of knowledge, they preach the
only things that they know. This creates an image from a young age of what Mutants are like and
creates a hostile and antagonistic society. The people of Waknuk are very vigilant because of their
upbringing, and what they have been taught is right. David says, People in our district had a very
sharp eye for the odd, or the unusual, so that even my left handedness caused slight disapproval (5).
This is important because it gives insight into the Waknukians views and opinions, and the mentality
of Waknuk becomes clear. It ties into the communities ignorance because they act this way out of
scarcity of any other options. They are taught that

Pros And Cons Of Health Care Reform
Introduction: The topic of discussion is the fairness of an individual mandated to purchase health
insurance. It was one of the most argumentative subjects in U.S. politics: the federal health care law s
requirement that everybody has health insurance or pays a fine. Supporters of this debate, argue that it
s fundamental to make health care more affordable and available to everyone.
Those against the mandate say a law that forces people to purchase anything, as well as health
insurance, disturbs promises of personal freedom protected by the Constitution. Opponents say, it also
makes health care more expensive and ineffective.

In the second article, Michael F. Cannon argues no: premiums will rise according to his article asking
should everyone be required to have health insurance. He even tells us if the mandate were
constitutional; it would still be a bad idea. Some of his reasoning s for this is not a good plan is that
the mandate will increase premiums. The mandate s greatest fabrication is the idea that it promotes
personal responsibility. He explains that supporters want a mandate so it can keep them from being
responsible. Here s how this will happen, by the federal law promotion of irresponsibility by allowing
healthy people to wait until they get sick to buy coverage. He argues this is selfishness forcing others
to bear the cost of ones decision.
I believe in the importance for each American to have the option for health insurance. As a nurse, I
have seen many cases of people that did not seek medical attention due to they could not afford health
care. I believe that I should support article #1 in regards to health care and it should be available and
affordable to all citizens. The Affordable Care Act is meant to address a lack of access and high costs.
The requirement of health insurance is not only fair, but it is desperately

Their father, Eduardo, gave us the rhythm with the frame drum. Corina doubled n the piccolo. The
music I was exposed to doing the performance was Debussy called Fascia lee played by the piano. I

The thoughts, images and feelings that came to me as I listened were salsa and being in the desert. It

The Current Systems And Policies
In contemporary Scotland, there are a large variety of needs that people require to live comfortable
and fulfilling lives. These needs arise in lots of different areas such as healthcare, education and
housing. The concept of need is a fundamentally important aspect of social policy because most social
policies are primarily implemented with the goal of helping and supporting people whose needs are
not currently being met by society. This essay will solely focus on the needs that come up regarding
healthcare, and will look to evaluate the current systems and policies in place that are tasked with
meeting these needs. Nearly every member of Scottish society will, at some point whether it be at
birth or in old age, require some type of health service to support them and meet their needs so it is
vitally important that these services are readily accessible and are of a satisfactory standard. Some of
the specific healthcare issues explored will include; the access to prescription medicine, the impacts of
free childhood immunisation programs, the dangers of smoking and the negative effect of alcohol
abuse on the National Health Service. This essay will also look to come to a general conclusion about
whether enough is being done to maintain the universal health and well being of the people of
Scotland.
The concept of need can often be difficult to define because it can mean different things to different
people and people s needs naturally differ from one another. Needs can differ

Ernest Hemingway Heroes
Heroes are a necessity for every story, whether it is a strong man, women or even a small child.
Heroes allow readers to further connect to a story while giving them a role model to look up to.
Hemingway was known for having men as his CODE HERO he first created this strategy in the 1920
s by making characters that readers could relate to. In A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway depicts
his main character Lieutenant Frederic Henry as this story s hero or manly man, a man of action rather
than philosophical while also being an individualist who falls madly in love with a young, American
nurse, Catherine Barkley. Us reader first embark on Henry s journey when we learn he is an

example of men being superior to women. When the baby arrives readers soon find that it was

finding out Catherine has hemorrhaged, he is forced to face the reality that his weakness and love of
his life is gone meaning he must go back to his mundane life before her. Death is the ultimate end in
the journey of a Code hero but in Henry s case he faced death almost unaffected, facing death bravely

The Religion Of Buddhism And Buddhism
In the world today, there are dozens of religions that have spread all over to many parts of the world to
promote their idea of spiritual enlightenment and peace. One of the interesting things that occurs with
some of these religions is after it spreads to a new area, how it becomes popular with the people and
becomes a part of everyday life. The religion of Buddhism is one of these that had this effect when it
began to spread from India where it originated, to many Asian countries especially China where it
would have the biggest impact. In China, Buddhism would take root and would grow to become a
popular religion in the country much like the other major religions of China, Confucianism and
Taoism, which together with Buddhism would later be known as the Three Teachings . Additionally, at
some point Buddhism would began to lose its popularity in India due to Hinduism, which had
absorbed some of the features of Buddhism and another famous religion from India Jainism, in order
to re emergence as the major religion of India. In China, this would not be the case, as it would
continue to grow and remain strong long after it fell out of popularity in India. This study will explore
some of the ways of how Buddhism was able to prosper and survive longer in China where in India it
was only able to last until Hinduism re remerged as the major religion for India. When Buddhism was
first arrived in China during the Han Dynasty (221 207 BC), it did not become popular right away, as

The Fall Of The Roman Republic
Tiberius and his brother Gaius were regarded in Roman tradition as the initiators of the revolution
which led to the breakdown of the Republic. (Roebuck, 1966:506) The fall of the Roman Republic
occurred during the late second century BC and resulted in various leading figures emerging such as
Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. Tiberius Gracchus was largely responsible for creating and initiating a
long term political crisis in Rome in the early first century through his land reformations and desire to
aid the poor. However, his intentions led not only to political arguments but violence within Roman
society. This will be demonstrated through the analysis of ancient sources, discussion of the historical
context, Tiberius Gracchus motives, actions and contribution to the fall of the Roman Republic. Much
has been written about Tiberius in both modern and ancient sources, although some are divided on his
motives while others strive for his selflessness. Orosius, an ancient source concerning the Roman
Republic stated that Tiberius was angry with the nobility because of the Numantine Treaty, decided
that the land possessed hither to by private individuals, should be divided amongst the people, and this
caused him to reform against the Senate (Bishop, 1988). There are a trio of vital ancient sources
reliable on the breakdown of the Republic. Cicero, Appian and Plutarch. Cicero is one of the few that

Analysis of the Triumph of Divine Love
The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul
Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by
Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven
art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic Protestant strife.
Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the
Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)

There are also several doves at the bottom of the painting, presumably indicating purity and perhaps
symbols of love as well. (Wall Text 2012) The focal point of the painting is the woman with infant.
This is shown by the lighting in the painting being directly on her, the bright red that she is wearing,
and the circling of the putti around her figure along with the majority of their gazes being directed at
her. The bright light directly behind her and the infant could possibly be coming from the sun behind
the clouds in the sky, the putti to her upper right holding the torch, or it could be symbolic in that it is
the infant s halo and representative of his divine nature. The overall piece is not overly dark but the
lighting seems to be most focused on the woman, infant, her other children, and the flying putti. This
is an example of tenebrism. The flying putti are shown in a ring around the woman, some holding
hands. Some have feathered wings; others have either insect or fairy like wings. They all seem to have
individual faces and expressions and all express happiness. The putti are contorted in different
positions as they fly in the air, and Rubens uses foreshortening with the limbs to achieve this and show
movement and action in the piece, especially with the two putti directly above the woman s head and
the back of their feet showing to the viewer. He also uses chiaroscuro to give the putti volume shown
by the lighting

Mill And Morality
J.S. Mill s and Morality According to John Stuart Mill, utilitarianism is the concept in which actions
are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness. He argues that happiness should be
distinguished between high and low pleasures. Hence, pleasures that engage the higher faculties of the
human body are seen as more satisfying than the baser pleasures in life, such as watching movies with
friends. Mill follows by arguing that utilitarianism, in the end, can be seen as morally binding. This is
true because if utilitarianism were to be adopted as an ethical stance, people would naturally embody
the standards of utility and happiness as if they were second nature or law. Thus, Mill s links
happiness, which he describes as intended

Sports Values In Society
I don t believe sports have value in American society, but then again, I tremendously do, sports is like
a gateway drug to most Americans. The reason I said that is because I watched a documentary on how
Africans from small villages would not have access to a TV so they could watch and the only thing
that brought them together was racing and the music they listen to that keeps them from everyday
worries in their lives. Sports value Americans in many ways, but It s also inspiring many of those who
now want to be athletics, due to the fact someone else is doing it. For an example, I ve seen a couple
friends of mine who were really good at sports and had good inspiration stories end up in depression.
Many people question, how? but many people don t know that once your mind value that one thing
and it doesn t end up happening, how they have seen it from the start. That sometimes bothers the
person because they told everyone this was your dream, but it didn t occur on time or it wasn t
planned. Substance abuse with athletics such as Alex Rodriguez, Cris Carter, and much more seems to
happen with lower and middle class families, grew over time when coaches were only focused on the
teammate winning but weren t looking into major things such as their health. Many players keep quiet
about their dark sides due to social media and news which messes up the person image. There are two

Land Reform In The 1940 s And 1950s

Land reforms are the changing of laws and regulations that make it possible for lands to be
redistributed. This usually results in the transfer of land from a person or corporation that holds a lot
of it into the hands of a person who has no land. This is mostly done to agricultural land as a part of a

Bp ( British Petroleum )
BP (British Petroleum) was founded well over a century ago by William D Arcy who invested his
savings in the hunt for oil in the Middle East. After several years of drilling, D Arcy s money and
patience were about to run out, when oil was found about 1,200 feet down. This changed the outlook
for the company and D Arcy became a rich man (Thorne, p. 587 2014). Because of the difficulty in
trying to drill for oil in this undeveloped land, by 1914 BP was almost bankrupt again. The company
had oil, but no one to sell to. Because of the insistence of Winston Churchill, the oil would be used by
the British Navy, which stared the debate over the repercussions of involving politics in the oil
industry. This debate has continued through present day wars (Thorne, p. 587 2014). The twenty first
century saw a tremendous growth in the oil industry, as well as a power shift in the Middle East. This
directly affected BP because the import taxes of oil were raised by Libyan leader Miammar al Gaddafi
and spread to oil rich Middle East countries. Because of this, BP s survival was contingent on finding
other places to dig for oil. The Forties Field off the coast of Scotland and Prudhoe Bay Alaska were
tapped, and became BP s best sites. It was a challenge for their engineers because transportation of the
oil became a problem. Because of this we saw the development of the largest deepwater pipeline ever
constructed. BP did extensive test to assure the public that this new pipeline

The Absolute Ego
During this paper I will discuss Fichte s ideas on the absolute ego and how it pertains to the idea of
God. I will also discus the similarities and also the differences between Fichte and Smakra as outlined
by Lewis. I will then conclude with my remarks and thoughts upon the subject matter.
Fichte was an idealist. This is the belief that nothing is known to us except ideas. Since this was the
belief of Fichte he avoided dualism and instead believed that only that which is in and for
consciousness can be assumed to exist. Fichte thus proceeded to explain experience as the product of
intelligence in itself. This idea of intelligence in itself is the ego. To understand this further we must
think the wall , once you think the wall then think of the person who thought the wall, and thus you
could go on indefinitely. This shows that no matter how we try to objectify the self there always
remains the pure ego. Furthermore, all can intellectually intuit the pure ego. This is further explained
that anyone who is conscious of an action as his own is aware of himself acting. Once someone
recognizes that an action is their own, the person is able to reflect on their self consciousness and will
realize that they can intuit the pure ego as an infinite activity. The pure ego itself is not conscious; the
pure ego becomes conscious through the philosophers activity directed towards the pure ego as an
activity. Once this occurs the pure ego posits itself. This pure ego is

The Compilers Of The Yellow Emperor s Inner Canon
The highest wisdom, as far as I can see, is when you have no ability to affirm one thing and deny the

not think this way but fortunately, they did this way. Therefore, a variety of heterogeneous ideas,
theories and concepts have been transmitted for a long time down to our hands (Unschuld, p. 76). In
the history of TCM, every time when the country went from unification to division, new medical
knowledge was infused with the older and every time when it returned from division to unification,
they were integrated together. The political/ideological pluralism is seemingly unsuitable for a

Even the illness etiology (e.g. evil wind) and the formulas of prescriptions (monarchs, ministers,

they are the products of intuitive thinking and analogical reasoning by the ancient Chinese people,
considerably different from the logical thinking and deductive/inductive reasoning in western culture.
However, this is exactly the reason why the theoretical paradigm of TCM is so inclusive: the
accumulation of medical knowledge is not based on logical experiments, but on intuitive experiences
without standards or unity, hence it is multi directional; the relationship between two things is not
elicited from deductions or inductions which require clear preconditions, but from analogical similes,
hence it is multi faceted (Chang Zhang, p. 12; Leung, p. 121). For instance, the concept pair Yang and
Yin can be seen as a symbol of any two opposite yet complementary objects existing everywhere and
perceived by everyone, such as day and night, hot and cold, man and woman (Unschuld, p. 55). The
dynamic changing between Yang qi and Yin qi represents the mutual transformation from one natural
force to another corresponding one (Leung, p. 20). This paradigm is like an infinite web into which
anything can be included but not fixed.

Analysis Of The Film The Flies By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Artistically speaking, this film is beautiful. There was a lot of thought put into every detail from the
actors to the camera shots. The film seems to flow in beautiful manner from one scene to the next.
One piece of art in the film is the use of symbols. Each symbol is delicately placed in order to make
sense to any viewers that can pick up on them. One symbol is Nick s obsession with his Peace Lily. It
represents his obsession with the job. It is the only other thing he cares for because its needs are
simple and by the books. When he breaks it, it is supposed to symbolize his change of heart; that
somebody has taken the place of the lily. Another symbol in the film is the number 3. There are 3
murders that take place before people believe Nicholas. There are 3 people Nick tries to talk to in
order to get out of being sent to Sanford. Many lines are repeated 3 times over. This could be in
reference to fairytales always using the number 3, since this plot seems far fetched like a fairytale.
However, it could also be in reference to the trilogy of films that Wright and Pegg made together.
Then, there is the swan symbol. Swans typically symbolize grace, beauty, and peace. In the film,
though, the swans symbolize an overbearing distraction. Nicholas is constantly surrounded by them in
the hotel he stays at, which is rightly called The Swan Hotel . He is also charged with the task of
catching an escaped swan. This causes him to miss many chances to catch the perpetrators of

Sociological Stress
Everyday Living can take a toll on the mind of any individual. Constant interaction with society can
bring the mind to a state of panic when over loaded. A primary concern is the consequences of these
sociological stressors. Sociological stressors can involve inadequate relationship, school stress,
unhappy living situation and unhealthy work habits. All of these inevitably correlate with the mental
health of individuals who may not be able to cope comfortably, causing mental illness symptoms to
worsen. Being able to cope effectively with stressful situations can minimize the effects of stress on
individuals. Life events that interrupt an individual s usual activities and require some adjusting can be
considered a beginning stage of a mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
College students are showing greater levels of stress, anxiety and depression, and signs show the trend
will become worse. The bottom line is that college students are already facing a mental health crisis.
To quote one source Statistical trends related to depression are hard to come by, but most experts agree
that depression rates in the United States and worldwide are increasing. (citation). Much of today s
research shows that college students today have greater levels of stress than any time in history. Stress
can be good if it motivates, but it s bad if it wears an individual down. Many factors can contribute to
the stress that one experiences, and this stress can cause changes in the body that affect an individual s
overall physical, mental, and emotional health. The ramifications of this kind of stress are affecting the
mental health of college students everywhere. Another social stress that can cause pressure on an
individual and cause mental health issues is an unhappy living situation. Families living in poverty can
suffer severe mental issues. This social issue is a common one that many people in today s society
face. The World Health Organization has described poverty as the greatest cause of

Veterans From The First Gulf War
Being a part of the armed forces is one of the most courageous, respectful deeds one could do for their
beloved country. Through immense sacrifice, individuals basically sell their souls away to the military.
They are subject to countless hours of brutal training and exposed to living conditions many people
could not compare too. Members of the armed forces are often seen as discipline, respectful, and
hardworking people, especially when they are retuning back to U.S soil from whatever tour they
served. In recent years, right after the end of Gulf War 2, veterans coming back from the Middle East
have experienced great difficulty entering the job market. Compared to veterans from the first Gulf
War, there is a significant difference in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ordered by President George H.W Bush, relentless allied attacks were made on the Iraqi forces which
led to their surrender. Though this win was a giant success for the allied forces, tension only rose
nearly a decade later with the second Gulf War starting in 2003. The Iraq War, also known as the
Second Persian Gulf War or Gulf War 2, started in March 2003 with the combined invasion of Iraq by
the United States and Great Britain. President George Bush urged the invasion of Iraq for two reasons.
First, the vulnerability of the United States following the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.
Secondly, the belief in Iraq producing weapons of mass destruction and their support for terrorist
groups in the region. In the early stages of the invasion, Iraqi troops did not stand a chance against the
invading countries. Iraqi military forces were forced to flee or surrender which allowed for a relatively
easy takeover of the country. With his county being completely dominated by allied forces, Iraqi
leader Saddam Hussein went into hiding. He was later found in December 2003, and was turned over
to country officials. After being convicted of crimes against humanity, he was executed in 2006. With
over 39,000 soldiers remaining in Iraq by the start of Barack Obama s presidency, the new commander
of chief of the United States announced they would be leaving the country upon by the end of 2011
(Encyclopedia Britannica, 2015).

A Farewell Of Arms, By Ernest Hemingway
Major events throughout history have resulted from human desire for fulfillment by instituting war,
preaching religion, and glorifying love. In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway introduces Frederic
Henry, an American in the Italian Army during World War I. Frederic Henry s attempts to find his
meaning in life, are represented by his attempts to discover the possibilities in war, religion, and love.
He does this through his friendship with a Catholic priest, his intense love affair with nurse Catherine
Barkley, who ends up pregnant with his child and eventually dies during labor, along with their child,
and finally with his position as Lieutenant during the war. Throughout A Farewell to Arms, Ernest
Hemingway repeatedly mentions games in war, love, and religion, to illustrate his belief that humans
use these as a way to play with and hopefully reach fulfillment but also use them as a distraction from
the inevitable ending: death.
Hemingway s repeated allusions to games in war, and his portrayal of Henry s attitude about war from
beginning to end of the novel shift dramatically; illustrating that war is used as a tool or a game by
humans to enrich their lives and avoid death, while systematically stealing the lives of others. From
disinterest, to realization, and finally reflection, Henry experiences diverse changes in his ideals
concerning war. At first Henry decides that I would not be killed... It did not have anything to do with
me stating his detachment from the

The War Of A National Highway System
The term New Frontier was used by liberal, Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy in his
acceptance speech. Kennedy entered office with the goal to get rid of Americas poverty, and to raise
America s eyes to the stars through the space program. During the New Frontier, unemployment
benefits were expanded, aid was provided to cities to improve housing and transportation, funds were
allocated to continue the construction of a national highway system started under Eisenhower, a water
pollution control act was passed to protect the country s rivers and streams, and an agricultural act to
raise farmers incomes was made law. The bay of pigs invasion was a failed military invasion of Cuba.
Brigade 2506, the group that attempted to invade cuba, was made up of Cubans who fled the country
after Castro s takeover, was trained and funded by the CIA. The CIA Castro gone because he was a
communist, and at the time everyone was afraid of communists. This attack lasted three days before
Brigade 2506 was defeated. The Cuban missile crisis, also known as the October crisis, was a
confrontation between the U.S and Soviet Union and was the closest the Cold War came to being an
actual war. In response to the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, Castro reached out to the Soviet Union and
asked for nuclear missiles to scare away any more countries thinking about attacking Cuba. After a
long period of tense negotiations, an agreement was reached between President John F.

Dissolve Disappearing Oxygen
Around 70% of the world is covered in water, and over time water tends to change. Oxygen levels can
rise, temperatures may decrease, and different environmental changes may be introduced. Naturally,
water stands to be at a pH level of 7, that being neutral in acidity. However, due to the changes in
water over time it seems, that too is changing over time. Even more so changes come from multiple
sources outside of the environment, this includes cities and agricultural lands. In fact, a small
percentage of water bodies are near agricultural areas, which also may influence a change in the water,
with the introduction of nitrates and phosphates, from agricultural runoffs. Nitrates and phosphates are
known to have high oxygen levels, which will affect bodies of water further. On an ecological scale,
such changes put the aquatic inhabitants in danger. With this being known groups of scientist went to
investigate the changes in water bodies by measuring the nitrate and phosphate levels in comparison to
the dissolved oxygen levels, as well as the pH, temperature, and turbidity to see if any real significant
changes have occurred. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With water bodies that are near agricultural areas, with fluctuations of the levels of nitrates and
phosphates that are introduced to the water bodies, the dissolved oxygen levels are affected. Turbidity
is also another important measurement of water quality as it affects not only the pH levels of the water
but also the temperature of the water. Turbidity itself measures the light refractiveness found in water
used to quantify the quality of water (Mann et al.,

Gonzalez v. Reno, 212 F.3d 1338 (11th Cir. 2000)
Procedural History:
Plaintiff, Elian Gonzalez, a six year old minor, through his next of friend , Lazaro Gonzalez, filed an
asylum application with the INS (Immigration amp; Naturalization Service), which was denied. The
plaintiff s then filed a claim in the federal district court which stated the Plaintiff s due process rights
were violated and the INS had overstepped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Issue:
Whether a minor child can file for asylum without the consent of a parent or legal guardian?
Rule:
8 U.S.C.A. § 1158 (West 2012) states any alien who is physically present in the United States or who
arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who
is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters),
irrespective of such alien s status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where
applicable, section 1225(b) of this title.
Analysis:
The main issues before the Court were two fold. First, could a six year old child apply for asylum
without a parent or legal guardian and secondly, did the INS overstep their authority in denying the
application for asylum. Statute 8 USC § 1158 states that any alien could apply for asylum, however,
the INS rejected that a six year old child had the mental capacity to make that decision for himself.
The INS interviewed both the Uncle Lazaro Gonzalez and the father Juan Gonzalez and determined
that the father was the legal guardian, therefore had the right to speak for Elian Gonzalez. Elian s
reasons for seeking asylum were fear of persecution . According to the uncle, if Elian, were returned
to Cuba,

  • 2. The Influence Of Tax Credits The Influence of Tax Credits The impetus behind the tax credits appears to be two fold. As taxpayers work to improve energy efficiency, decreasing usage, and lessening the environmental impact of their daily activities, they may receive financial rewards based on their actions. The offer of tax credits is an attempt to achieve a certain behavior from the consumer. However, two important things must take place before the consumer takes action. First, the consumer must be aware that a tax credit is available. Sales are highly publicized, but publicity relating to tax credits is limited. Once the consumer is made aware of a tax credit, they must view the tax credit as a reduction in price, but a tax credit is much more complicated with several caveats. Environmental tax credits offered by various levels of government are extremely popular with both the governing bodies and those who benefit from the credits. Government is seen as taking a positive step not only towards improving the environment, but reducing the United States dependency on fuel from other countries which in turn allows for greater security. Tax credits allow the individual or business to decide how to spend their money and the financial benefit of a particular behavior. The financial benefit may be in the form of reduced operating costs or taxes. However a closer look at eco friendly tax credits for the individual consumer points to a class discrepancy. These tax credits require an initial and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Brief Note On Tobacco Control Measures Were Challenged... II. Tobacco control measures were challenged in the WTO 1. Measures relating to provisions of the GATT 1994 WTO members might impose tariff and non tariff measures on tobacco products when these products are imported to their territories. However, by the three critical principles, which are mentioned in the previous part, the GATT 1994 prevents WTO members from measures establishing discrimination and trade restriction. Therefore, in boundary measures imposed on tobacco products might be challenged under these principles. In Dominican Republic Measures Affecting the Importation and Internal Seal of Cigarettes in 2004, Honduras submitted its request to establish proceedings in the framework of the WTO to claim that measures, which the Dominican Republic imposed on imported cigarettes, did not comply with some provisions of the GATT 1994. 1.1. Transition surcharge and foreign exchange fee The Dominican Republic imposed a transition surcharge on all imported products, including cigarettes. The amount of the surcharge is 2 percent of the cost, insurance and freight value of the imported good . Importers had to pay extra 10 percent of value of the products imported to the Dominican Republic at the selling rate for foreign exchange in the this country. Honduras claimed that these surcharge and fee did not comply with Article II:1(b) of the GATT 1994. The Panel noted that the surcharge and fee: (i) were additional charges of imported taxes. Thus, they were in boundary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Argument Wellness According to Maritain, the individual is a complex entity that holds the desires and wants of the human being, and is willed to the universe for its own sake and stability. The person requires community to manifest dignity, and seeks acknowledgement for who we are, and what we are, as humans, and it allows for preferences of each being as it evolves. Because people have inherent good in their essence, and, according to the encyclicals, are created in God s image, the good is capable of transcending anything a political system has created. The good of the human being is above the combined good of the physical universe because God became us, and so our goodness is above anything and everything else. • 7. Similar Ideas Presented in Blade Runner by Ridley Scott... Bound by different contexts, authors often use a popular medium in order to depict the discontent of the ideas of society. This is evident in the module Texts in Time; as Blade Runner, having been written more than one hundred years after Frankenstein is still able to reflect the ideas proposed in the latter. Blade Runner by Ridley Scott deals with the effects of globalisation and consumerism during 1980 s. Alternatively, the epistolary novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley deals with the kinship to the natural world set in the Romantic Era and enlightenment period. However Blade Runner, although subjected by a different context, also portrays a similar idea to Frankenstein; the fear of science and technology coupled with the value of the definition of a human. Through this commonality, we are able to utilise the values of Blade Runner in order to truly understand Shelley s purpose. During the 1980 s, the increasing amount of industrialisation brought about a new period in time, the Industrial Revolution. Literally revolutionising the world, the Industrial Revolution changed the way the world was perceived, no longer an agricultural based society but instead one overrun with globalisation and consumerism. Scott portrays this in an overindulged manner, looking at the extreme effects to long time globalisation and consumerism. As depicted in the film, the city is subject to a constant downpour of rain surrounded by numerous skyscrapers that effectively block out the view of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis Of Angels Displaying The Crown Of Thorns There are several miniatures in particular that are meant to evoke piety, for Anne, as well as that which she hoped her son would display, in time. Angels Displaying the Crown of Thorns (Fol. 30r) depicts two angels reverently holding a golden crown of thorns, referencing that worn by Christ. In Angels Displaying the Eucharist in a Monstrance (Fol. 11v), four angels carefully hold a monstrance, a device by which the Host of communion could be displayed for worship and respectful contemplation. These angels are in a similar setting and arrangement to those holding the crown of thorns, and both images share the same main purpose, as well: to have two extra sections of this prayer book inadvertently dedicated towards recalling the Passion of Christ. There are also some other possible implied purposes, though. The inclusion of the crown of thorns in one folio serves as a reminder of the fact that Anne had privileged access to Sainte Chapelle, which she undoubtedly took advantage of, built by Louis IX following his obtainment of the Crown of Thorns, as a place in which to house it, along with other such articles. Her piety is thus re emphasised through yet another display of devotion for her son to follow. In a similar manner, the monstrance, an object of great importance to the devout, would serve the same purpose. Yet, there is also the sense that Anne is showcasing the opulent objects at her disposal, for the crown of thorns was certainly not a replaceable, nor common, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. History of the West Nile Virus Essay History of the West Nile Virus Abstract West Nile virus (WNV) is a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. It has been found in humans, birds, and other animals, typically in Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. In 1999, WNV was detected in the United States for the first time, and since then it has spread across the U.S. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 15,000 people in the U.S. have tested positive for the WNV infection since 1999, including over 500 deaths. Many more people have likely been infected with WNV, but have experienced mild or no symptoms. What is the history of the West Nile virus? West Nile virus is an emerging infectious disease that can cause encephalitis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because New York City is such a huge port of entry into this country, it was suggested that WNV came from a bird smuggled into the US from Africa or Asia. Since then, WNV has spread to 48 states, and to Canada and Mexico. Ever since the outbreak in New York till now there where 15,000 people in the U.S. that tested positive for WNV infection. The virus has probably spread to the east through the west by migrating birds that have the virus. West Nile virus exists in nature through a transmission cycle involving mosquitoes and birds. Mosquitoes become infected with West Nile virus when they feed on infected birds, which may carry the virus in their blood for a few days. Infected mosquitoes can then transmit West Nile virus to humans and animals when biting to take a blood meal. In rare instances, West Nile virus may be transmitted from human to human through organ donation or blood transfusion or from pregnant mother to fetus. These new modes or transmission are still under investigation. People typically develop symptoms 3 to 15 days after they are bitten by an infected mosquito. WNV affects the central nervous system in the body, however, symptoms vary. Less than one percent (about one in 150 people) of individuals infected with WNV will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Review Of Margaret Atwood s Bluebeard s Egg Revision of Bluebeard : An analysis of Margaret Atwood s Bluebeard s Egg Margaret Atwood s short story, Bluebeard s Egg is a contemporary retelling of the original story Bluebeard that is written by Charles Perrault. Atwood s revision differs from the traditional tale of Bluebeard in that it takes place in a modern day setting instead of a fantastical environment, it lacks magical elements and it is a narrative that is told through the third person point of view instead of omniscient. Bluebeard s Egg explores the themes of, infidelity, ingenuity, concealment, and curiosity by shifting the fairy tale into a modern, middle classed environment so her readers can find it more relatable. Bluebeard s Egg is told in a third person point of view in order to expose Sally s mental movements which she has concealed through images of fairy tales and happily ever afters. She wants to replace her normal, non romantic life with her husband Ed to a fantastical one where she is the princess (Atwood 772). Shuli Barzilai notes the difference in the narrative perspectives between the two literary texts: Instead of the omniscience of most fairy tale narrators, Atwood uses restricted internal focalization (192). The comment about internal focalization indicates that Sally is the main focus of the story. Since Ed never articulates his point of view Sally s statement of Ed being stupid is biased. On the other hand, in Bluebeard the story is told through an omniscient point of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Characteristics Of The Biochar Derived From Pine Fruit... Characteristics of the biochar The characteristics of the biochar derived from pine fruit residue are shown in Table 1. The adsorptive properties of sorbent are greatly dependent on their particle size and distribution throughout the mass. Effective size and uniformity coefficient are the two important parameters for treatment of contaminated water using adsorbent as filtering media in column operation where control of particle size is critical. The effective size corresponds to the sieve size through which 10% of the material will pass, and the uniformity coefficient is the ratio of the sieve size that will just pass 60% of the material to the effective size. Generally, the rate of adsorption get enhanced as the particle size decreases due availability of increased surface area. Therefore, the adsorbent with smaller effective sizes provide better adsorption capacity due to better the access to the surface area and faster the rate of adsorption. The typical range of effective size and uniformity coefficient for activated carbon as adsorbent media practiced satisfactory is D10 = 0.15 0.35 mm and Cu = 2 3 respectively. In our case, Table 1 shows that the biochar prepared have an effective size of 0.055 mm and uniformity coefficient 2.87. The more uniform adsorbent media is expected to provide the slower head loss buildup and therefore, careful consideration of particle sized distribution is must for dynamic column design. To a certain extent, the characters in each film contrast with one another, displaying a change in social and political context, specifically with the concept of feminism. This is due to the changes of media content as society has progressed. In the first scene in which features the Women Warrior, it is evident she is disappointed in the actions of Max when he demands for oil, she tells the leader give him nothing turning to Max and says trading human flesh, you must be trash . Preparation, characterization, and physical properties of a nanostructured materials of silver (nanoparticles and nanocomposites) have been the subject of various researcher in many scientific laboratories during the past years for many studies and it has been also established that size, stability, color, shape, and properties depend on the method of preparation (radiation, photochemical, electrochemical, and chemical) as well as experimental factors such as [reactants], [stabilizer and/or capping agents], temperature, order of mixing of reactants, presence of stabilizers and capping agents and even on the addition rate of reducing agents [1 12]. The properties of such nanocomposites can further be improved through various treatments like, annealing, UV irradiation and Gamma irradiation is one of the extensively used tools to alter the structural, optical properties [13, 14], Many of reports were used gamma irradiation to synthesis the Ag nanoparticles in PVA [15,16], and the other literature were prepared Ag PVA nanocomposite films and then irradiated with gamma at doses (25, 50, 75, 100 KGy) [17]. • 16. The Repercussions Of Ignorance In The Chrysalids By John... The Repercussions of Ignorance Martin Luther King said, Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity (Bell). The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is set in the future after an apocalyptic event known as Tribulation, causing a lack of knowledge of the past. The main community, Waknuk, is prejudiced and ignorant. The narrator, David, recalls the unfolding of the dangerous predicament caused by his society s ignorance. In this novel, the author presents that ignorance results in adversity and ultimately, a society s downfall. The Waknukians ignorance creates a hostile environment, causes disagreement, and is the agent of their own defeat. The Waknukians ignorance leads to their abomination of Mutants, creating a very hostile environment. Their ignorance and lack of knowledge cause them to rely on the only remains of the Old People and are used for direction in their lives. When speaking of Nicholson s Repentances David says, Frequent references to these texts had made me familiar with the words long before I was able to read, in fact I am not sure that they did not give me my first reading lessons. I knew them by heart, just as I knew others elsewhere in the house, which said things like: THE NORM IS THE WILL OF GOD (18). This represents the environment that the Waknukians are exposed to early in life, and this is evident when David says that he was familiar with the words long before [he] was able to read. It shows how significant these morals are to the Waknukians, and how in the absence of knowledge, they preach the only things that they know. This creates an image from a young age of what Mutants are like and creates a hostile and antagonistic society. The people of Waknuk are very vigilant because of their upbringing, and what they have been taught is right. David says, People in our district had a very sharp eye for the odd, or the unusual, so that even my left handedness caused slight disapproval (5). This is important because it gives insight into the Waknukians views and opinions, and the mentality of Waknuk becomes clear. It ties into the communities ignorance because they act this way out of scarcity of any other options. They are taught that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those against the mandate say a law that forces people to purchase anything, as well as health insurance, disturbs promises of personal freedom protected by the Constitution. The mandate s greatest fabrication is the idea that it promotes personal responsibility. He explains that supporters want a mandate so it can keep them from being responsible. He argues this is selfishness forcing others to bear the cost of ones decision. I believe in the importance for each American to have the option for health insurance. These needs arise in lots of different areas such as healthcare, education and housing. The concept of need is a fundamentally important aspect of social policy because most social policies are primarily implemented with the goal of helping and supporting people whose needs are not currently being met by society. This essay will solely focus on the needs that come up regarding healthcare, and will look to evaluate the current systems and policies in place that are tasked with meeting these needs. Nearly every member of Scottish society will, at some point whether it be at birth or in old age, require some type of health service to support them and meet their needs so it is vitally important that these services are readily accessible and are of a satisfactory standard. Some of the specific healthcare issues explored will include; the access to prescription medicine, the impacts of free childhood immunisation programs, the dangers of smoking and the negative effect of alcohol abuse on the National Health Service. The Religion Of Buddhism And Buddhism In the world today, there are dozens of religions that have spread all over to many parts of the world to promote their idea of spiritual enlightenment and peace. One of the interesting things that occurs with some of these religions is after it spreads to a new area, how it becomes popular with the people and becomes a part of everyday life. The religion of Buddhism is one of these that had this effect when it began to spread from India where it originated, to many Asian countries especially China where it would have the biggest impact. In China, Buddhism would take root and would grow to become a popular religion in the country much like the other major religions of China, Confucianism and Taoism, which together with Buddhism would later be known as the Three Teachings . Additionally, at some point Buddhism would began to lose its popularity in India due to Hinduism, which had absorbed some of the features of Buddhism and another famous religion from India Jainism, in order to re emergence as the major religion of India. In China, this would not be the case, as it would continue to grow and remain strong long after it fell out of popularity in India. (Roebuck, 1966:506) The fall of the Roman Republic occurred during the late second century BC and resulted in various leading figures emerging such as Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. Tiberius Gracchus was largely responsible for creating and initiating a long term political crisis in Rome in the early first century through his land reformations and desire to aid the poor. However, his intentions led not only to political arguments but violence within Roman society. This will be demonstrated through the analysis of ancient sources, discussion of the historical context, Tiberius Gracchus motives, actions and contribution to the fall of the Roman Republic. Much has been written about Tiberius in both modern and ancient sources, although some are divided on his motives while others strive for his selflessness. Orosius, an ancient source concerning the Roman Republic stated that Tiberius was angry with the nobility because of the Numantine Treaty, decided that the land possessed hither to by private individuals, should be divided amongst the people, and this caused him to reform against the Senate (Bishop, 1988). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are also several doves at the bottom of the painting, presumably indicating purity and perhaps symbols of love as well. (Wall Text 2012) The focal point of the painting is the woman with infant. This is shown by the lighting in the painting being directly on her, the bright red that she is wearing, and the circling of the putti around her figure along with the majority of their gazes being directed at her. The bright light directly behind her and the infant could possibly be coming from the sun behind the clouds in the sky, the putti to her upper right holding the torch, or it could be symbolic in that it is the infant s halo and representative of his divine nature. The overall piece is not overly dark but the lighting seems to be most focused on the woman, infant, her other children, and the flying putti. This is an example of tenebrism. The flying putti are shown in a ring around the woman, some holding hands. Some have feathered wings; others have either insect or fairy like wings. They all seem to have individual faces and expressions and all express happiness. The putti are contorted in different positions as they fly in the air, and Rubens uses foreshortening with the limbs to achieve this and show movement and action in the piece, especially with the two putti directly above the woman s head and the back of their feet showing to the viewer. Mill follows by arguing that utilitarianism, in the end, can be seen as morally binding. Finally, it was admitted that faculty and staff made a significant difference in the operation of policy in the schools, that failure to recognize anti LGBTQ language as bullying causes a need for further study, and that the transitory nature of global student accommodation required more in depth linguistic analysis and continued ... • 40. Bp ( British Petroleum ) BP (British Petroleum) was founded well over a century ago by William D Arcy who invested his savings in the hunt for oil in the Middle East. After several years of drilling, D Arcy s money and patience were about to run out, when oil was found about 1,200 feet down. This changed the outlook for the company and D Arcy became a rich man (Thorne, p. 587 2014). Because of the difficulty in trying to drill for oil in this undeveloped land, by 1914 BP was almost bankrupt again. The company had oil, but no one to sell to. Because of the insistence of Winston Churchill, the oil would be used by the British Navy, which stared the debate over the repercussions of involving politics in the oil industry. This debate has continued through present day wars (Thorne, p. 587 2014). The twenty first century saw a tremendous growth in the oil industry, as well as a power shift in the Middle East. This directly affected BP because the import taxes of oil were raised by Libyan leader Miammar al Gaddafi and spread to oil rich Middle East countries. Because of this, BP s survival was contingent on finding other places to dig for oil. The Forties Field off the coast of Scotland and Prudhoe Bay Alaska were tapped, and became BP s best sites. It was a challenge for their engineers because transportation of the oil became a problem. Because of this we saw the development of the largest deepwater pipeline ever constructed. BP did extensive test to assure the public that this new pipeline ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Absolute Ego During this paper I will discuss Fichte s ideas on the absolute ego and how it pertains to the idea of God. I will also discus the similarities and also the differences between Fichte and Smakra as outlined by Lewis. I will then conclude with my remarks and thoughts upon the subject matter. Fichte was an idealist. This is the belief that nothing is known to us except ideas. Since this was the belief of Fichte he avoided dualism and instead believed that only that which is in and for consciousness can be assumed to exist. Fichte thus proceeded to explain experience as the product of intelligence in itself. This idea of intelligence in itself is the ego. To understand this further we must think the wall , once you think the wall then think of the person who thought the wall, and thus you could go on indefinitely. This shows that no matter how we try to objectify the self there always remains the pure ego. Furthermore, all can intellectually intuit the pure ego. This is further explained that anyone who is conscious of an action as his own is aware of himself acting. Once someone recognizes that an action is their own, the person is able to reflect on their self consciousness and will realize that they can intuit the pure ego as an infinite activity. The pure ego itself is not conscious; the pure ego becomes conscious through the philosophers activity directed towards the pure ego as an activity. Once this occurs the pure ego posits itself. This pure ego is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Compilers Of The Yellow Emperor s Inner Canon The highest wisdom, as far as I can see, is when you have no ability to affirm one thing and deny the other, leave them both to your descendants. The compilers of the Yellow Emperor s Inner Canon might not think this way but fortunately, they did this way. Therefore, a variety of heterogeneous ideas, theories and concepts have been transmitted for a long time down to our hands (Unschuld, p. 76). In the history of TCM, every time when the country went from unification to division, new medical knowledge was infused with the older and every time when it returned from division to unification, they were integrated together. The political/ideological pluralism is seemingly unsuitable for a centralized country with such large territory and population, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even the illness etiology (e.g. evil wind) and the formulas of prescriptions (monarchs, ministers, assistants and emissaries) are also confusingly irrelevant to medicine (Lloyd Sivin, p. 233). Indeed, they are the products of intuitive thinking and analogical reasoning by the ancient Chinese people, considerably different from the logical thinking and deductive/inductive reasoning in western culture. However, this is exactly the reason why the theoretical paradigm of TCM is so inclusive: the accumulation of medical knowledge is not based on logical experiments, but on intuitive experiences without standards or unity, hence it is multi directional; the relationship between two things is not elicited from deductions or inductions which require clear preconditions, but from analogical similes, hence it is multi faceted (Chang Zhang, p. 12; Leung, p. 121). For instance, the concept pair Yang and Yin can be seen as a symbol of any two opposite yet complementary objects existing everywhere and perceived by everyone, such as day and night, hot and cold, man and woman (Unschuld, p. 55). The dynamic changing between Yang qi and Yin qi represents the mutual transformation from one natural force to another corresponding one (Leung, p. 20). This paradigm is like an infinite web into which anything can be included but not fixed. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Analysis Of The Film The Flies By F. Scott Fitzgerald Artistically speaking, this film is beautiful. There was a lot of thought put into every detail from the actors to the camera shots. The film seems to flow in beautiful manner from one scene to the next. One piece of art in the film is the use of symbols. Each symbol is delicately placed in order to make sense to any viewers that can pick up on them. One symbol is Nick s obsession with his Peace Lily. It represents his obsession with the job. It is the only other thing he cares for because its needs are simple and by the books. When he breaks it, it is supposed to symbolize his change of heart; that somebody has taken the place of the lily. Another symbol in the film is the number 3. There are 3 murders that take place before people believe Nicholas. There are 3 people Nick tries to talk to in order to get out of being sent to Sanford. Many lines are repeated 3 times over. This could be in reference to fairytales always using the number 3, since this plot seems far fetched like a fairytale. However, it could also be in reference to the trilogy of films that Wright and Pegg made together. Then, there is the swan symbol. Swans typically symbolize grace, beauty, and peace. In the film, though, the swans symbolize an overbearing distraction. Nicholas is constantly surrounded by them in the hotel he stays at, which is rightly called The Swan Hotel . He is also charged with the task of catching an escaped swan. This causes him to miss many chances to catch the perpetrators of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Sociological Stress Everyday Living can take a toll on the mind of any individual. Constant interaction with society can bring the mind to a state of panic when over loaded. A primary concern is the consequences of these sociological stressors. Sociological stressors can involve inadequate relationship, school stress, unhappy living situation and unhealthy work habits. All of these inevitably correlate with the mental health of individuals who may not be able to cope comfortably, causing mental illness symptoms to worsen. Being able to cope effectively with stressful situations can minimize the effects of stress on individuals. College students are showing greater levels of stress, anxiety and depression, and signs show the trend will become worse. The bottom line is that college students are already facing a mental health crisis. To quote one source Statistical trends related to depression are hard to come by, but most experts agree that depression rates in the United States and worldwide are increasing. (citation). Much of today s research shows that college students today have greater levels of stress than any time in history. Stress can be good if it motivates, but it s bad if it wears an individual down. Many factors can contribute to the stress that one experiences, and this stress can cause changes in the body that affect an individual s overall physical, mental, and emotional health. The ramifications of this kind of stress are affecting the mental health of college students everywhere. Another social stress that can cause pressure on an individual and cause mental health issues is an unhappy living situation. Families living in poverty can suffer severe mental issues. Through immense sacrifice, individuals basically sell their souls away to the military. They are subject to countless hours of brutal training and exposed to living conditions many people could not compare too. Members of the armed forces are often seen as discipline, respectful, and hardworking people, especially when they are retuning back to U.S soil from whatever tour they served. Ordered by President George H.W Bush, relentless allied attacks were made on the Iraqi forces which led to their surrender. Though this win was a giant success for the allied forces, tension only rose nearly a decade later with the second Gulf War starting in 2003. The Iraq War, also known as the Second Persian Gulf War or Gulf War 2, started in March 2003 with the combined invasion of Iraq by the United States and Great Britain. President George Bush urged the invasion of Iraq for two reasons. First, the vulnerability of the United States following the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. Secondly, the belief in Iraq producing weapons of mass destruction and their support for terrorist groups in the region. In the early stages of the invasion, Iraqi troops did not stand a chance against the invading countries. Iraqi military forces were forced to flee or surrender which allowed for a relatively easy takeover of the country. With his county being completely dominated by allied forces, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein went into hiding. He was later found in December 2003, and was turned over to country officials. After being convicted of crimes against humanity, he was executed in 2006. • 46. A Farewell Of Arms, By Ernest Hemingway Major events throughout history have resulted from human desire for fulfillment by instituting war, preaching religion, and glorifying love. In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway introduces Frederic Henry, an American in the Italian Army during World War I. Frederic Henry s attempts to find his meaning in life, are represented by his attempts to discover the possibilities in war, religion, and love. He does this through his friendship with a Catholic priest, his intense love affair with nurse Catherine Barkley, who ends up pregnant with his child and eventually dies during labor, along with their child, and finally with his position as Lieutenant during the war. Throughout A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway repeatedly mentions games in war, love, and religion, to illustrate his belief that humans use these as a way to play with and hopefully reach fulfillment but also use them as a distraction from the inevitable ending: death. Hemingway s repeated allusions to games in war, and his portrayal of Henry s attitude about war from beginning to end of the novel shift dramatically; illustrating that war is used as a tool or a game by humans to enrich their lives and avoid death, while systematically stealing the lives of others. From disinterest, to realization, and finally reflection, Henry experiences diverse changes in his ideals concerning war. At first Henry decides that I would not be killed... Kennedy entered office with the goal to get rid of Americas poverty, and to raise America s eyes to the stars through the space program. During the New Frontier, unemployment benefits were expanded, aid was provided to cities to improve housing and transportation, funds were allocated to continue the construction of a national highway system started under Eisenhower, a water pollution control act was passed to protect the country s rivers and streams, and an agricultural act to raise farmers incomes was made law. The Cuban missile crisis, also known as the October crisis, was a confrontation between the U.S and Soviet Union and was the closest the Cold War came to being an actual war. • 48. Dissolve Disappearing Oxygen Around 70% of the world is covered in water, and over time water tends to change. Oxygen levels can rise, temperatures may decrease, and different environmental changes may be introduced. Naturally, water stands to be at a pH level of 7, that being neutral in acidity. However, due to the changes in water over time it seems, that too is changing over time. Even more so changes come from multiple sources outside of the environment, this includes cities and agricultural lands. In fact, a small percentage of water bodies are near agricultural areas, which also may influence a change in the water, with the introduction of nitrates and phosphates, from agricultural runoffs. Nitrates and phosphates are known to have high oxygen levels, which will affect bodies of water further. On an ecological scale, such changes put the aquatic inhabitants in danger. With this being known groups of scientist went to investigate the changes in water bodies by measuring the nitrate and phosphate levels in comparison to the dissolved oxygen levels, as well as the pH, temperature, and turbidity to see if any real significant changes have occurred. ... Rule: 8 U.S.C.A. § 1158 (West 2012) states any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien s status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title. Analysis: The main issues before the Court were two fold. First, could a six year old child apply for asylum without a parent or legal guardian and secondly, did the INS overstep their authority in denying the application for asylum. Statute 8 USC § 1158 states that any alien could apply for asylum, however, the INS rejected that a six year old child had the mental capacity to make that decision for himself. The INS interviewed both the Uncle Lazaro Gonzalez and the father Juan Gonzalez and determined that the father was the legal guardian, therefore had the right to speak for Elian Gonzalez.
