This document discusses three leadership theories: contingency theory, transactional theory, and transformational theory. Contingency theory states that leadership effectiveness depends on situational factors. Transactional theory focuses on supervision and uses rewards/punishments to achieve compliance. Transformational theory involves inspiring and motivating followers through idealized influence, inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation to perform to higher standards.

Leadership and Leadership Styles
Defining a Leader…Think of a leader that you worked for or observed…
What does this person do and what qualities does this person have that make you admire him or her as a leader?
*
This is basically a brainstorming question to allow the group to think about what makes good leaders. This allows the group to start thinking about leadership styles.
Leadership - what is it?
“influencing people so that they will strive willingly towards the achievement of group goals” 1

TransactionalMotivate followers by appealing to their own self-interest
Motivate by the exchange process. EX: business owners exchange status and wages for the work effort of the employee.
Focuses on the accomplishment of tasks & good worker relationships in exchange for desirable rewards.
Encourage leader to adapt their style and behavior to meet expectations of followers
*
Some researchers added to Burns original theory and it is thought by many today that transactional leadership can encompass four types of behavior.
1. Contingent Reward – To influence behavior, the leader clarifies the work needed to be accomplished. The leader uses rewards or incentives to achieve results when expectations are met.
2. Passive Management by Exception - To influence behavior, the leader uses correction or punishment as a response to unacceptable performance or deviation from the accepted standards.
3. Active Management by Exception - To influence behavior, the leader actively monitors the work performed and uses corrective methods to ensure the work is completed to meet accepted standards.
4. Laissez-Faire Leadership – The leader is indifferent and has a “hands-off” approach toward the workers and their performance. This leader ignores the needs of others, does not respond to problems or does not monitor performance.
Transactional leadership behavior is used to one degree or another by most leaders. However, as the old saying goes, “if the only tool in your workbox is a hammer…you will perceive every problem as a nail”. A leader should not exclusively or primarily practice transactional leadership behavior to influence others! Here are a few common problems of those who do so. Some use transactional leadership behavior as a tool to manipulate others for selfish personal gain. It can place too much emphasis on the “bottom line” and by its very nature is short-term oriented with the goal of simply maximizing efficiency and profits. The leader can pressure others to engage in unethical or amoral practices by offering strong rewards or punishments. Transactional leadership seeks to influence others by exchanging work for wages, but it does not build on the worker’s need for meaningful work or tap into their creativity. If utilized as the primary behavior by a leader it can lead to an environment perm ...
This is a document that will give you in depth knowledge about the leadership theories. It explains transformational and transactional leadership theories in detail and even shows the relationship between them.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
3. Contingency Theory
- Are a class of behavioural theory that
contend that there is no one best way of
leading and that a leadership style that is
effective in some situations may not be
successful in others.
- An effect of this is that leaders who are
very effective at one place and time may
become unsuccessful either when
transplanted in another situation or
when the factors around them change.
4. • Contingency theories in general
state that the effectiveness of
leadership depends upon the
situation, and there are
numerous factors, such as the
nature of the task, leader's
personality, and make-up of the
group being led.
5. Transactional Leadership Theory
• also known as managerial
leadership, focuses on the role of
supervision, organization, and group
performance; transactional
leadership is a style of leadership in
which the leader promotes
compliance of his/her followers
through both rewards and
punishments
6. • . Unlike Transformational leadership,
leaders using the transactional approach
are not looking to change the future,
they are looking to merely keep things
the same. Leaders using transactional
leadership as a model pay attention to
followers' work in order to find faults and
deviations. This type of leadership is
effective in crisis and emergency
situations, as well as for projects that
need to be carried out in a specific way.
7. Leaders are:
• Leadership is responsive.
• Works within the organizational culture.
• Employees achieve objectives through rewards
and punishments set by leader.
• Motivates followers by appealing to their own
self-interest.
• Management-by-exception: maintain the status
quo; stress correct actions to improve
performance..
8. • is a style of leadership where the leader is charged with
identifying the needed change, creating a vision to guide
the change through inspiration, and executing the change
in tandem with committed members of the group. It also
serves to enhance the motivation, morale, and job
performance of followers through a variety of mechanisms;
these include connecting the follower's sense of identity
and self to the project and the collective identity of the
organization; being a role model for followers in order to
inspire them and raise their interest in the project;
challenging followers to take greater ownership for their
work, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of
followers, allowing the leader to align followers with tasks
that enhance their performance.
Transformational leadership
9. • The concept of transformational leadership was
initially introduced by leadership expert and
presidential biographer James MacGregor Burns.
According to Burns, transformational leadership
can be seen when "leaders and followers make
each other advance to a higher level of morality
and motivation." Through the strength of their
vision and personality, transformational leaders
are able to inspire followers to change
expectations, perceptions, and motivations to
work towards common goals.
10. • There are 4 components to
transformational leadership,
sometimes referred to as the 4 I's:
1. Idealized Influence (II) - the leader
serves as an ideal role model for
followers; the leader "walks the talk,"
and is admired for this.
11. 2. Inspirational Motivation (IM) - Transformational
leaders have the ability to inspire and motivate
followers. Combined these first two I's are what
constitute the transformational leader's charisma.
3. Individualized Consideration (IC) -
Transformational leaders demonstrate genuine
concern for the needs and feelings of followers. This
personal attention to each follower is a key element
in bringing out their very best efforts.
4. Intellectual Stimulation (IS) - the leader
challenges followers to be innovative and creative.
A common misunderstanding is that
transformational leaders are "soft," but the truth is
that they constantly challenge followers to higher
levels of performance
