BASICS:
TRAIT THEORY
 The trait theory arose from the the “Great Man”
theory as a way of identifying the key
characteristics of successful leaders .
 It was believed that through this theory critical
leadership traits could be isolated and that people
with such trait could then be recruited ,selected and
installed into leadership positions.
 This theory was common in the military and is still
used as a set of criteria to select candidates for
commissions.
WHAT IS TRAIT ?
 Trait is a particular characteristics through which
we can judge a person (Produce particular type of
behavior)
TRAIT THEORY
 Focuses on individual characteristics of succesful
leaders
 Leaders possess a set of traits which make them
distinct from follows .
(Ralph stogdill)
 Genrally Traits Theories of Leadership (focuses on
leader qualities/traits)
 Leaders are born with certain traits which make
them leaders. Common believes were that “Leaders
are born, not made.” and Leaders possess certain
traits that make them leaders
LIMITATIONS:
….
 • Later studies of leadership characteristics led to
the conclusion that there were a few general traits
that were associated with effective leadership such
as self-confidence, stress tolerance, emotional
maturity, and integrity--but again no trait or set of
traits by itself guaranteed leader effectiveness.
Limitations:
Attempts failed to identify a set of traits that would
always differentiate leaders.
EARLY LEADERSHIP THEORIES
 Trait Theories (1920s–30s)
 Research that focused on identifying personal
characteristics that differentiated leaders from
nonleaders was unsuccessful
 Later research on the leadership process identified
seven traits associated with successful leadership:
 Drive, the desire to lead, honesty and integrity, self-confidence,
intelligence, job-relevant knowledge, and extraversion
