LAN(Local Area Network)
Confined to small area only.
Limited to lab, school or buildings.
Generally of only one organization.
Does not range more than 3 km(Approx).
TYPES OF TOPOLOGY
2. RING TOPOLOGY
1.BUSTOPOLOGY:
 Each computer or nodes are
connected to a main communication
lines.
 Uses short length cable that reduces
the installation cable.
 Low traffic cost
 Limitation to addition of new
computers in future.
 One computer gets problem then
whole system will get a problem.
Support optical fiber
cable that gives high
speed.
Connected in a
closed loop.
Short Cable
connection which
make reliable.
Adding new nodes
become difficult.
Any node failure
causes network
failure.
3. STAR TOPOLOGY
Connected to a
central
computer.
Need only one
port.
Easy to
troubleshoot.
Long cable
length.
Depends on central
hub.
COMPONENTS OF LAN
A hub, also called a network hub, is a
common connection point
for devices in a network. Hubs are
devices commonly used to
connect segments of a LAN.
NIC is a circuit board installed in a
computer that provides a
dedicated network connection to the
computer.
A network bridge is a computer
networking device that creates a single
aggregate network from multiple
communication networks or network
segments
A gateway is a piece of networking
hardware used in
telecommunications for
telecommunications networks that
allows data to flow from one
discrete network to another.
A repeater is
an electronic
device that
receives a
signal and
retransmits it.
Repeaters are
used to
extend the
network.
A router is a
device that
forwards data
packets
along computer
networks.
A network switch is
networking hardware that
connects devices on a
computer network by using
packet switching to receive
and forward data to the
destination device
Network media refers to the
communication channels
used to interconnect nodes
on a computer network.
