Examine different types of social media and their uses

Look at social media from the perspective of a curator or
Librarian

Explore some benefits and draw backs of social media

First response to ban it , the tolerate it and finally make it
compulsory!

A few facts about our activities



            Started blogging
5 years ago currently has 17 active blogs

        Facebook fan page for
    3 ½ years now With 32,641 likes.
   The BL has an “official” Twitter feed from
2 ½ years & number and individual feeds related
             to the BLs activities
An online gallery containing 30,000 items which allows
         tagging as Sound archival recordings

      Around 100 podcasts
        on the You Tube

     Primo Beta Catalogue
           which also
        allows tagging.                                  5

Introductory remarks… This presentation will not be about why people form communities Rather it will… Examine different types of social media and their uses Look at social media from the perspective of a curator or Librarian Explore some benefits and draw backs of social media First response to ban it , the tolerate it and finally make it compulsory! 2
  • 3. Why? Web-based and mobile technologies to communicate or converse with other individuals or organisations: Social Network Service shares interests and activities In the UK there are: 42 million Smart phones 31 million Internet Connections 3

  • 5. A few facts about our activities Started blogging 5 years ago currently has 17 active blogs Facebook fan page for 3 ½ years now With 32,641 likes. The BL has an “official” Twitter feed from 2 ½ years & number and individual feeds related to the BLs activities An online gallery containing 30,000 items which allows tagging as Sound archival recordings Around 100 podcasts on the You Tube Primo Beta Catalogue which also allows tagging. 5
