Modern pedagogies typically advocate the transition of teacher-centred educational practices to student-centred approaches that pass ownership of learning to the students. Implicit in this call for student ownership of learning is the assumption that students want to, can, and will take on that ownership. However, this may not be the case—taking on ownership of one’s own learning requires hard work, metacognitive and executive skills, knowledge management, and intrinsic motivation, whereas the path of least resistance may seem more desirable: sit passively in class, complete the given learning tasks, and submit the required assignments. The problem may not be how to get instructors to pass ownership of learning to students, but rather how do we get students to take ownership of their own learning. This problem is exacerbated by many LMS’s: many of these systems are implicitly teacher-centred (i.e., tools for instructors to manage courses)) and provide few tools for students to manage their own learning (e.g., tools for managing knowledge or for setting, working on, and monitoring progress on learning goals). In this Thinking Session, I invite participants to discuss innovative solutions to the problems: 1. How do we get students to take ownership of their own learning? 2. How do subvert LMS technologies to promote and support student ownership of learning?

- 6. A new addition to the site is the ‘Mastery Challenge’ which lets you practice what you have learned and helps you go up a level. The activities set by your teacher are here. The activities which the site thinks you should complete are here.

- 9. The more points you get, the quicker you go up a level. The harder the activity, the more points you get. The ‘Math Pretest’ is something you do to test what level of maths you are at.
- 10. These are the levels on the chart, they get darker the better you get. This is your mission progress chart. It shows all the topics and what level you are on.
- 11. If you get more You can also get hints which show than 5 you how to work out the question. questions right in a row, you get extra points.
- 12. This shows how you did when you answered questions.
- 13. This is one class list with pupils on. A teacher can see students’ progress and set them work.
- 16. This is what level the student is on (see before).
- 18. This is a student’s progress, a teacher can set them extra work if they need more help.
- 20. This is the activity of one pupil (in a class of two.) You can see that Pupil 1 (turquoise) has earned many energy points and is doing many extra activities. Then look at Pupil 2 (dark blue.) Pupil 2 is struggling, however the red line on the graph shows their progress during their time on Khan Academy. You can easily see where the pupil begins to understand and earns their first badge and energy points. Khan Academy can easily show a teacher the progress of their students; which exercises they found easiest and what they are struggling with.
- 27. Good Bad There are no complications after signing up. You need a Gmail or Facebook account to sign up. Your teacher can set you homework and lessons you should learn, and also set a due date. There is no ‘notepad’ on the screen when doing activities, so you might need a separate piece of pen and paper. A teacher can see a chart on their students progress. It is mainly focused on maths. There are many levels and lessons. It is easy to add a teacher or pupil to a class. A teacher can control many classes at once. Pupils will have the chance to fully understand a concept before the teacher moves on in class.
