3. Memorization M emorizing multiplication facts can be a tricky feat. There are so many facts to memorize, many students see it as something they cannot accomplish 1 . Memorizing math facts can be fun and easy as long as you have the right tools to use! M emorizing math facts requires time and patience. 4. Memorization (cont’d) T he first thing you need to learn, to make it easier on yourself, is that there are many different tools to help you learn to memorize your multiplication facts. Not one tool is right for everyone, so find the one that works best for you. Some of these tools include using manipulatives and the multiplication table, which will be shown later in this presentation. The more tools you use to help you with memorizing your multiplication, the faster you will learn your facts.

Manipulatives Manipulatives are simply “various objects designed to be moved or arranged by hand as a means of developing motor skills or understanding abstractions, especially in mathematics” 1 This means that they are things that you can use to see and feel to help you learn in math. There are many websites offered that will allow you to manipulate objects with the click of your mouse to learn your multiplication facts . Another type of manipulative that may be used in your classroom everyday is a calculator. Always do the problem first and use the calculator to check your answer .

8. Things to think about What are manipulatives? Are there many different types of manipulatives that you can use to help you? Does your teacher have access to some of these that you might use to help you?

9. Multiplication Tables Multiplication tables are probably one of the easiest things to use and your teacher will give you a copy to help you learn your facts.

10. Multiplication Tables (cont’d) Down the left side of the chart and across the top are the “factors”. Factors are the numbers you multiply together. For example, if you need to know what 7x9 is, you go across the top to seven and down to nine. Where they meet together is where your answer, or product, is. The product is what you get when you multiply two or more factors.

11. Things to think about What is 8x9? Is there a pattern to any of the factors and their answers? What is a factor and a product?

12. Conclusion I had many “aha” moments during this exercise. The first was when I learned how hyperlinks work. The second was learning what action buttons were and how to place them. The third was when I figured out this assignment was not really as hard as I thought it was. Overall this was a fun learning experience. It taught me that I can do something even if I think I cannot get it done. I pushed myself to learn something new and useful for my future as a teacher.
