2. Analysis Of 1493 By Charles C Mann
Charles C Mann, the author of 1493 provides an extensive analysis of the age of
exploration through a series of best selling books. He illustrated both pre columbian
and post Columbian era and established the significance of globalization across the
world through the books 1491 and 1493.The book was first published on 2011 as a
continuation of 1491 that recorded America before the arrival of Columbus.Charles C
Mann provided an astonishing interpretation of columbian exchange through
examining several aspects of global trade. He integrated social economical and
cultural components of globalization to inform readers on how it shaped the modern
world. The author s main purpose was to engage readers in critical thinking and
evaluate both advantages and disadvantages of globalization that united the
world.Globalization blended many cultures and tradition and increased the survival
of humankind. Moreover, the Columbian exchange ranked Europeamong the greatest
powers of the world; thus, Charles C Mann also discussed significant European
pressures that lead to the everlasting transformation of the world.
The book was written from the author s ceaseless desire for knowledge and
irresistible curiosity; he was astonished at the sight of tomatoes displayed in a garden
organized by college students. The variety of tomatoes encouraged the author to
explore its origin; most of the tomatoes were cultivated in America and transported to
Asian countries. As the author researched the original
3. Religion and Women Essay
Religion and Women
Religion can be seen to act as a social control over women to a large extent. The
feminist perspective argues religion serves the interests of men and cements
patriarchal power. Karen Armstrong points out the ways in which God has been
redefined by each era, by men to continually meet their needs. We can see this in
relation to two main ideas, the nature of religious imagery. In most religions, women
tend to be portrayed in terms of their traditional social characteristics. The Virgin
Mary in Christian religion for example. Although a powerful figure her power, is
ideological rather than political the virtues of purity, chastity, motherhood and so
forth are personified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are told they are close to God as they produce a soul of god when they are
mothers but this is used to control them and they in turn socialize the children into
the religion and the ideology, ultimately not recognising their inequality and it all
benefits men. The nature of religious organisation is another issue when stating the
extent to which religion is used as a social control over women. While women,
feature strongly in both religious participation and to a certain extent, imagery, it is
evident that there has been a very noticeable inequality between males and females in
terms of positions of power and authority within religious organisations. Although
some sects have allowed women to preach and spread the word, the majority of the
world s major religions have tended to relegate women to relatively subordinate roles,
in terms of their power, authority and influence in their organisation (which further
reflects women s experience in the social world).
However the extent to which religion has been used vas a social control over women
can be questioned as in relation to Christianity, the decision in 1994 by the Church
of England to ordain women as priests and to allow them to take charge of Church
services is a significant development to note. Also some religions do not convey the
same ideology as others and are more egalitarian such

Asking the Right Questions: Chapters 6 8 1. Assumptions are statements that are
unstated most of the time; they are statements that are potentially deceptive.
Assumptions are necessary in that they provide support for the conclusion in an
argument. One can identify assumptions in arguments by locating significant
ambiguity, particularly in the conclusion of an argument. One may additionally
locate assumptions by engaging in role reversal, or in layman s terms, playing devil
s advocate for an argument. 2. A value assumption is an implicit preference for a
particular value over another particular value within a specific context. One of
Leopold s value assumptions from his writing is that protecting wolves is ethical. He
values the environment a great deal; his value assumption connects the strength of
preference for his value to his fundamental argument for environmental ethics, as well
as redeems him for his past behavior of hunting wolves. 3. Value conflicts exist as the
differing values that stem from different frames of reference, implying that values are
relative. A value conflict of modern society comes from the drive to continue the
process of becoming modern, which typically includes the sacrifice of nature, while
maintaining respect and admiration for nature. 4. Descriptive assumptions are beliefs
regarding how the world operates. One may identify assumptions in arguments by
5. Hydrogen And Hydrogen As A Fuel
Introduction
Hydrogen is proven to be the most efficient furl because of its abundance and the
production of harmless bi products as compared fossil fuel. Despite the abundance
in its natural existence, Hydrogen can also be obtained through processes such as
the electrolysis of water and methanol steam conversion. Hydrogen as a fuel is
capable of the replacement of most of the other sources of energy. However,
Hydrogen faces numerous obstacles to its entry into the economy and the utilization
by human beings. The technology to contain and manage hydrogen as a fuel is
already present. However, the hindrances bar the launch of hydrogen as a basic fuel.
The essay discusses the various obstacles to the hydrogen economy such as the
market entry issues and issues related to policies.
Thesis statement: The government ownership of fossil fuel reservoirs and gas outlet
companies is the main obstacle to the launch and adoption of the hydrogen economy.
Background and history The use of hydrogen as a fuel requires the adoption of the
fuel cells technology for their role in the reaction activity between hydrogen and
hydrogen for the production of energy. The fuel cells convert more of their energy
potential from the fuel source as compared to the regular gasoline fuels. The
insignificance of the impact caused by the bi products of such reactions makes it the
much better option than the fossil fuels that face the threat of exhaustion. However,
the adoption of hydrogen as the primary
6. My Critique Of A Concert Experience
As you have most likely already read on my data sheet, I listened to Dr. Joe and
Friend play at Ayuthai Restaurant on November 12th. The venue features jazz
ensembles pretty often, although I am not sure why... Are the Thais even bigger
fans of jazz than the French, or is it a personal preference of the venue owner? My
first concert experience was overall pretty good. I had a difficult time recognizing
selections so I had to stay for the full two hours. I ate a lot of Thai food. Appetizer,
entree, and dessert... I would have felt like a pig if the couple seated next to be hadn
t order over double the amount of food I did. Point being, I highly recommend
Ayuthai Restaurant, and now onto my critique.
The vocalist was no Billy Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald, but she was not half bad
either! I was overjoyed whenever she joined the group. She sang two songs at the
end of the first hour and then another two at the end of the second. I was finally
able to recognize and write down some selections! I had not been able to recognize a
simple musical piece played without her accompaniment. They were not playing any
of the jazz standards that I knew. No Ain t Misbehavin , My Favorite Things, or
Body and Soul... The first song she sang was one whose instrumentation I would
have recognized, though. Orange Colored Skies is one of my favorites. I know the
words by heart, so I immediately noticed something different.
The lyrics had been trimmed a great deal, with more favor being shown to the

7. Relationship Between Perfectionism And Perfectionism
Relationships between Perfectionism and Eating Disorders Perfectionism plays an
important role in several psychological disorders including eating disorders. There are
lots of studies about perfectionism with Anorexia nervosa. Many authors suggest to
study perfectionism from a multidimensional perspective. Perfectionism is defined as
the tendency to set and pursue unrealistically high standards despite the occurrence of
adverse consequences (as cited in Cassin and von Ranson, 2005). Several authors
have identified different components of perfectionism such as Self oriented
Perfectionism and it is termed by Flett and Hewitt, Other oriented perfectionism, and
socially prescribed perfectionism. Anorexia nervosa(AN) has a particular relationship
to perfectionism. AN is an eating disorder which people starve themselves even they
may die. AN primarily occurs in women and they are afraid becoming fat.
Perfectionism
According to Pacht (1984) Perfectionism as the setting of excessively high
standards for performance accompanied by overly critical self evaluations.
Perfectionism can precede, maintain or be an effect of AN and sometimes persist
after recovery (as cited in Cassin and von Ranson, 2005; Lilienfeld, Wonderlich,

having tooth decay. By having fluoride in water, you can help prevent yourself from
having tooth decay, the most common childhood disease, in the most efficient way.
Apparently water fluoridation is very effective that the Centre for Disease Control

Earthquake An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. We know that
tectonic plates move slowly towards, away from or past each other. Continents are

Earthquakes are the most deadly of all natural disasters. When an earthquake
strikes, it can make a difference between life and death. If you survive an
earthquake it s something you ll never forget. Most of the time it s not the quake
that kills people but the building and the things inside it that fall down. It can
destroy pipelines, gas lines that can cause fire and zero electricity. Usually there are
aftershocks for weeks or months. For example, the earthquake that happened in San
Francisco, California on October 17,1989. It was a really destructive earthquake that
killed people and billions of dollars in damages.
Description of The Event The earthquake that happened in San Francisco, California

11. Introducing Active Learning in the Classroom
More teachers should introduce active learning into their classrooms in order to
reduce their rate of job burn out and better connect with students. Burn out is physical
and emotional fatigue resulting from persistent frustration. It can cause a lack of
motivation and eventually forces people to leave their current jobs. In the case of
teachers, it is especially important to recognize this burn out because it not only
affects instructors but also their students. Studies show that burned out people
experience emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal
accomplishment (Evers, W. G., Tomic, W., 2003). These studies bring up the point
that burn out is both physical and mental describing emotional fatigue,
depersonalization, and limited personal achievement. These effects do not mesh well
with the traditional characteristics expected in a teacher. In fact, burn out contributes
to student apathy in many cases. The problem becomes that most burn out studies
lack actual proof of the relationship between the stressors and health concerns. The
studies I looked at attempted to solve this problem and establish these connections in
order to find a workable solution. Main Issues The process of keeping formerly
qualified teachers instructing is stated to as retention. The loss of these teachers is
called attrition (Dolan, A., 2008). Policies instituted by the administration at many
schools influence attrition in different ways (Smith, M., 2012). Teachers
12. Role Of Social Class In The Great Gatsby
Following the industrial revolution of the late 19th century, the United States of
America was thrown into a tumultuous journey; a journey of wealth, power, and
greed. As opportunities for success and power arose, America evolved into a nation
known for its ingenuity and freedom. However, as investment and entrepreneurship
opened streams of currency across the country, the newfound recipients of self made
wealth found themselves outcasts among the rich, exiled for their lack of history.
Furthermore, the divide between the upper class and lower class grew exponentially,
eradicating much of the middle class and leaving the impoverished forgotten and
overlooked. Throughout his life, F. Scott Fitzgeraldpresented himself as something he

In this description, the use of the color white invokes a sense of purity and
refinement, symbolizing the gracefulness of the old money class. However, the
white symbol of purity is contrasted by the color red, which represents violence and
anger. For example, Fitzgerald writes: Inside, the crimson room bloomed with
light (Fitzgerald 17). In this citation, the use of the color red, on the inside of the
home, illustrates that internally, Tom and Daisy are plagued by anger and
insensitivity. Fitzgerald s use of color symbolism, specifically white to represent
the appearance of purity and red to represent the violence of reality. Further. the
notion that the old money class values and traditions are a facade and in reality
they are selfish conveys a lack of social mobility, as those with old money solely
care for themselves and their power. Within the novel, the residents of West Egg,
specifically Gatsby himself, represent a unique location on the pyramid of wealth.
They are those who began somewhere near the middle and are attempting to reside
among those at the peak. At first, those of the new money class have hope that they
can succeed, yet as they realize that they lack the social connections of the old money
class they fall into melancholy and attempt to cover their insecurity with lavish
displays of wealth. When describing Gatsby, Fitzgerald often uses green to

solution. What is the Blockchain? The Blockchain is said to be a product of the new
digital currency movement however others will argue that cryptocurrencies are a
direct result from the blockchain design. Let s explore further and then you can

I will start by explaining the development of the blockchain followed by the purpose
and process in which it operates. Then, I will explain the blockchain in relation to

To this day, no one knows who is the creator of the blockchain or the cryptocurrency

What is the blockchain?
The blockchain is a very complex topic and like the internet you only need to know
the basics of how it works and not what goes behind the scenes, to have it running,
because there would be others with the capacity and knowledge to administer that
part for the rest of us. Accordingly, I will attempt to provide an explanation of what
the blockchain is in the simplest form possible. A blockchain is a type of
distributed ledger, comprised of unchangeable, digitally recorded data in packages
called blocks ( Blockchain Technologies ). As illustrated by Ameer Rosic, the
blockchain is a block of data which is linked to a chain of other data blocks made

Second, offshoring of processing work will reduce the bargaining power of the labor

the high switching cost associated with data migration and training.

As a result a week later they engaged in warfare with them. On May 27, 1607 a
battle broke out between the English and about two hundred natives in which
eleven English men died. This incident unfortunately forecasts the tragic future of
Euro American Native American Relations (Kelso 2006:16). Not only was this a
traumatic time for the English it was also a wake up call to further fortified the

Indians played a role in the location and survival of Jamestown. The English were
in Powhatan s territory, and the island had a natural defense from their enemies
making it the safest place to be, even if it was not a geographically ideal location.
Powhatan was considered one of the most powerful chiefs claiming to have over a
hundred children. Powhatan died in 1618 and his brother, Opechancanough led an

Have you ever wondered how a utopia works or if it is even possible? Well, a
utopia is a place where everything is perfect and everyone is perfect. There is

people think a utopian community is possible. Others think that it is impossible.
Although mankind thinks a flawless civilization is possible, a utopian society is
unachievable because there is not a perfect setting or person in this world. One
reason a community like a Utopian city is not possible is because many Utopian
communities have been tested but have failed. In one article 4 Utopian Communities

20. 70s Energy Crisis Analysis
There is substantial discussion whether the environmental and energy crisis of the
70s or the globalization and terrorism in the early 21st century ushered in a period of
decline in the United States. Despite being nearly three decades apart from one
another and completely dissimilar in nature, there are many correlations that may be
drawn into how these two matters frolicked into the deterioration of the United States.
Based on my understanding and opinion, I would state that the environmental and
energy crisis of the 1970s was the principle declining factor, which subsequently led
to the globalization and terrorism experienced in the 21st century that only added to
the decline of America.

In fact, Jimmy Carter stated, [America] is the most wasteful nation ... use twice as

to many Americans since the environmental crisis was occurring at the same time
were focused on conservations and cleanup efforts and to reduce oil drilling,
meanwhile oil supply was almost nonexistent and being used so carelessly that it
became an inevitable to drill for more oil. The dependence on oil is evident in a

quadrillion Btu, and natural gas was at 20 quadrillion Btu (07 Environment Oil

21. Laura Ingalls Wilder Research Paper
Have you ever wondered about how people lived in the late 1800s in America?
Historians aren t the only ones who can teach you about those times. Laura Ingalls
Wilder lived in those days and experienced all of the joys, pain and hardship of living
the pioneer life. She decided to write about her experiences later in life, and those
writings became famous for providing a window into what life was like then. This
paper will detail the life of Laura Ingalls Wilderand her contributions to literature and
recording american history as the writer of the Little House book series.
Laura Ingalls Wilder had a very colorful childhood on the edge of civilization in the

22. Tom Regan The Case For Animal Rights Summary
In The Case for Animal Rights written by Tom Regan, the author analyzes reasons
for why all beings should have rights, but argues in particular why animals should
have basic rights, like humans. I regard myself as an advocate of animal rights as a
part of the animal rights movement (Regan 337). The goals of the movement
include the following: not allowing the use of animals in science, commercial
agriculture, and the eradication of commercial and sport hunting or trapping. Regan
blantly dismisses people who claim to believe in the rights of animals, but do not
put forth these goals. He rejects the thought that using animals for cosmetic research
is a violation of their rights and is unacceptable, but if it is cancer research then it is
permissible. You don t change unjust institutions by tidying them up (Regan 337)
Regan goes on to break down his paper into views which he believes that people
hold in regard to animal rights, he then counters these views with thought
experiments that explain why suffering and pain are only feelings that add to the
fundamentally wrong system that allows animals to be seen as resources. In this
paper, I will discuss Regan s arguments, possible objections to his arguments, and
provide answers to those objections using the author s point of view. First, Regan
breaks his arguments into main views, which include the indirect duty theory, the
cruelty kindness theory, the utilitarian approach to animal rights, and the rights view.

Landscape Painting as Per Carus s Nine Letters
Carus Nine Letters on Landscape Painting largely expounds upon man s relationship
with nature, and therefore the effects of landscape painting on the human state. Letter
III is essential in gaining a conception of Carus definition of truth and whether he
himself believes this truth is sufficient in landscape painting. In his thesis on
landscape painting, Carus claims that mere truth is not in itself the noblest feature or
sole attraction of the painting stating that a painting must be able to exude the sense
that its existence is a result of the creativity that stems from the human mind. It seems
apparent by way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without the element of sublimity, what would be the need for landscape art?
Landscape art would simply be a duplication of what can be seen directly in nature.
This is precisely Carus point when he asserts that in terms of truth...the painting
[itself] is infinitely inferior (Carus p. 91).
In applying this idea to specific landscape paintings, Carus s thesis becomes more
easily understandable. Friedrich s Two Men Looking at the Moon depicts a
foreground scene in which two men are observing the moon from a nondescript
mountain path. It s monochromatic hues in shades of brown and grey suggest
nightfall. Due to the lack of middle ground in this painting, the foreground contrasts
directly with the on setting night sky, which is depicted in lighter hues of brown.
This contrast not only illuminates the figures in the foreground allowing the viewer
to project oneself into the figures experience with nature but also suggests the
converse relationship of the rational mind with the natural realm. As a result, this
painting essentially embodies Carus s theory. Not only does Friedrich truthfully
capture the essence of nature, but he also allows the spectator to join in on the
moment of contemplation depicted, inducing the critical sense of unity that Carus
discusses in Letter III.
Another integral component Carus discusses in his thesis is the ability of a genuine
work of art to contain a coherent whole, or otherwise serve as a world in

26. Beyond The Myth By Joan Of Arc Summary
Sophia Beverly The book I have read is Beyond the Myth: The Story of Joan of Arc
by Polly Schoyer Brooks. The book follows Joan on her mission to crown Charles the
Dauphin, king and save France. Joan is considered one of FranceВґs most popular
heroine and even a saint. She was from a village called Domremy that was attacked
frequently by violence and raids from England. She was very focused on her
religion, some may say too religious, and prayed frequently to saint statues. Joan
lived on a farm and worked like all the others in her village. The book pointed out
that Joan was what many would consider special because she believed that she had
seen and heard saints. She believed that St. Michael was her first spiritual
experience, but her revelations continued to become more vivid and frequent, as
her life continued. She was convinced they came from God. People either thought
she was special because she heard voices from god or because they thought she
was mentally ill. Joan had realized that her voices were telling her that she was
chosen by God to rescue Dauphin Charles and the country of France. Joan was
directed to a town called Vaucouleurs to get help from the governor and prepare to
rescue Orleans and the Dauphin. As the book describes, Joan ran away to
Vaucouleurs. Somehow, she had talked relatives into taking her to the governor who
wasn t thrilled to speak to Joan. When she told the governor of her mission and about
her God, he laughed in her face. After a while,

29. Essay about Recycling Wealth in the Inner City
Recycling Wealth in the Inner City
INTRODUCTION
The modern story of developed areas is a move from the inner city to the suburbs.
This decentralization of metropolitan areas has left urban areas neglected. Such a
transformation has had negative consequences, because it has inherently meant the
abandonment of those left behind in urban centers. Furthermore, the issue is
complicated by the fact that the distinction between those moving to the suburbs and
those left behind has been defined largely by race. As Kain notes,
the means by which racial segregation in housing has been maintained are amply
documented. They are both legal and extra legal; for example: racial covenants;
racial zoning; violence or threats of violence; ... Show more content on

There must be efforts to counteract the movement towards the suburbs, and programs
aimed at rebuilding the inner city. Ideally, the end result might be transforming the
inner city black ghettos into thriving black business districts through investing and
directing resources back towards urban centers.
HISTORY
In terms of considering the potential for rebuilding the inner city and creating a
thriving district of concentrated black Americans, it is important to note that such an
ideal is not as unprecedented as one might be led to believe. .
A history of concentrations of Black economic activity would be incomplete without
mention of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the once thriving African Americanbusiness district
that existed there. In the early part of the 20th century, northern Tulsa was home to
a 36 block district dubbed Black Wall Street and while it was not actually a center
for financial trading it was a prospering business center. Tulsa was home to Black
physicians, attorneys, and scholars. One doctor, for example, Dr. Berry, owned the
bus system and was known to make incomes of $500 a day. Unfortunately, the
success of Tulsa came to a dramatic halt when the aftermath of a race riot concluded
with the area even being bombed from the air by the National Guard
(www.blackwallstreet.org).
A second Black Wall Street district arose in Durham, North Carolina by the

Varied Selection Tools By: BAP Fashions PSYCH/705 September 15, 2014
University of Phoenix The Employee Selection Process Many of organizations today
use a variety of techniques for collecting evidence and data about applicants. Methods
such as, interviews, personality tests, ability tests, assessment centers, physical tests
can be used to classify if applicants are suitable or unsuitable for the job and the
company s culture. According to Schultz and Schultz (2010), hiring decisions usually
are not based on one method, but on a combination of methods. Organizations are
using varied selection tools to guarantee that they collect all of the relevant

This method can tell job analysts about the nature and traits of a person. Research
showed that a person who has an introvert behavior will perform low in customer
services position, and a person who is an extrovert will perform better in a
customer services position (Barrick Mount, 1991). It is fair to say that Gilland
Moore Winery must look for extrovert individuals to fill for the sales positions. An
individual who possesses a higher degree of extroversion may then be more
energetic in a social situation than an individual with a low degree of extraversion.
The meta analysis conducted by Barrick and Mount (1991), indicates that the valid
predictor of work related performance is conscientiousness. They also viewed that in
some individuals; the emotional stability and extraversion appeared to be valid
predictors of work related performance. Therefore, suggesting Gilliand Moore
Winery to conduct personality testing in employee selection can be quite valuable,
for this can guide in organizational decision making. Validity and Reliability of
Selection Tools In the selection process, job analyst must ensure that certain
information gathered were reliable and valid. The most obvious standard for
evaluating hiring tools is accuracy, or how well the procedure actually measures the
job related attributes the job analysts are looking for in applicants. In the context

Not many people can say they were up and about the same day after treatment of
a brain tumor. This is now possible with the Gamma Knife, a technology utilizing
gamma rays to treat brain disorders successfully and with no incision. These
requirements are essential when trying to treat the disorders in a sensitive organ as

These procedures also require months of rehabilitation after the operation. With the
Gamma Knife, all of these problems are greatly reduced. Tumors or blood vessel
abnormalities are destroyed with 0.1 mm accuracy. Multiple tumors can be
destroyed easily because the entire procedure is only about half an hour long. A
person treated in this way can also return to daily activities in just a day or two. The
success rate for controlling the tumor growth is 85 to 90 percent.
The Gamma Knife technology does not involve a knife at all. It is a 20 ton
machine with the active parts being 201 sources of radioactive cobalt 60. These
gamma rays from the cobalt 60 sources converge on the targeted tissue and destroy it.
The surrounding part of the brain is left unaffected because the individual beams are
not strong enough to destroy tissue that is passed through on the way to the target.
The combined effect of the 201 beams is strong enough to destroy the abnormality in
about 30 minutes though. The gamma rays are directed by sophisticated computer
technology, thereby eliminating the sources of error that are encountered during
invasive procedure by surgeons operating manually.
The Gamma Knife was developed as a tool to improve cranial operations. Private
entrepreneurs are already known to have bought some up as forms of income. Mild

Throughout history, people have consistently tried to prove that groups with inborn
qualities can either vastly improve or degenerate different races over time. This
rhetoric has been proven multiple times throughout the course of the last century in
the United States and Nazi reigned Germany. Supposedly, this rhetoric has been
disproven throughout the United States; however, there are proven accounts that the
United States government has recently supported this theory of sterilization of
minorities by supporting the eugenicsmovement, which was not only in Nazi
Germany, but also on United States soil. The topic of improving the genetic makeup
of different races has not only just become a common theme for many modern day
countries to use to make their societies more genetically fit. However, it has adopted
the basis for current racismthat is clearly apparent in today s society. If improving
genetic fitness was not a concern to past societies, then people in general would be a
lot more open to interracial and cross cultural relationships rather than completely
disregarding the idea of dating someone that is visibly genetically different.
Historically speaking, Americans and the United States government have consistently
had many issues of not recognizing their faults towards current situations that could
potentially be avoided. From the War on Terror and the Black Lives Matter
movement, the United States does not like to look back upon past events that have

36. The Theory Of Self Defense
Self defense is described in the dictionary as; the act of defending one s person
when physically attacked, as by countering blows or overcoming an assailant ( self
defense, n.d.). The concept of self defense appears well defined; however, the
tactics allowed to protect oneself have evolved just as America has. As technology
and weaponry advance, the need for clearer laws pertaining to the actions allowed by
an individualneed to be reevaluated and clearly communicated. Starting in early
colonial times and moving through history, there is a great deal of differences
between the self defense that was once permitted and what is acceptable and tolerated
today.
In early colonial times, Europeans began settling in America. During this time,
there was a need for self defense from both the Native Americans who were already
settled on the new land and from the European invaders who wanted to take it over.
Self defense was originally termed the first law of nature, and citizens were
allowed to use deadly force whenever they judged it necessary. This practice of self
defense existed during a time where the individual was considered the ... judge, jury,
and executioner (Cornell, 2013). While being attacked, an individual was allowed to
determine the course of action he or she could take to protect himself or herself
whether it be retreating or killing the perpetrator. During this time, items such as one
s own hands, bow and arrows, knives, and weapons of that sort were used

nations are required to help those in need and attempt to find solutions. From what

refugees to seek asylum in their countries. It is the duty of first world countries to

A country that accepts refugees can create good foreign relations and alliances with
nations that could benefit it in the future. If to say the war in these countries were to
end, that country would be indebted to the European or North American nation that
took in their people. In the future, if that prosperous country were to require aid or
wanted to gain more goods, the previous country would help them out of gratitude
and alliances. In addition, refugees can help create cultural diversity in a country and
increase population, which could lead to economic prosperity. For example, as
Madame Louise Arbour argued in the Munk Debate on the global refugee crisis,
Canada prides itself on being a culture mosaic. The Canadian culture is one where
everyone comes from different walks of life but can still unite as one. Also,
Canada has a low population, which it tries to increase with immigration. If
refugees were to come to a country like Canada, they could add to the work force

cultures that seem foreign. How could one stereotype a certain culture based on what

greater woman without being given the agency to move forward. Often, the economy
serves as a systematic force of oppression for women. In this paper I will argue that
the Fearless Girl statue represents the continuation of economic exploitation of
women as a means of publicity. I believe this is the case because throughout history
America has used the economy to oppress women while simultaneously falsely
supporting them as demonstrated through the encouragement of the American Dream
in the 1950s, the lack of opportunity for improvement and conversation in the 1960s
and 1970s, and through the most recent Fearless Girl statue.
To better understand the magnitude of economic oppression, several ideas must be
defined. Agency relates back to the freewill of something, be it an individual,
group, or otherwise. Often debated, agency has been generally agreed upon as an
issue of choice. Aristotle took the view that agency is composed of an agent s
intentions paired with their reason for action in order to achieve a goal (Schlosser).
For the sake of feminism and this paper, an example would be women, the agents,
using their freewill with intentions of
41. Contact Movie Analysis
Contact
Based on the previous Carl Sagan s novel about an adolescent scientist s
determinations to make Contact with life itself beyond just our universe. The most
famous quote that Sagan tells the story of this movie is that there is billions and
billions of stars up there . The fascinating science fiction film/thriller of that century,
Contact, combines many concepts that do not usually go together or are thought
about in relation to each other. That being the concept of faith, politics, and most
importantly science. This movie was released on July 11th, 1997 by producers
Robert Zemeciks and Steve Starkey. Dr.Ellie Arroway played by Jodie Foster rushes
to translate a message that they think could be coming from the Vegastar system.
When contact at first happens, Dr.Ellie Arroway communicates with the
constricting National Security Advisor Kitz who is played by James Woods. After
this unravels, they go in to see the possible problems with occurrence of this event.
An out breaking message is discovered in the signal, but the question is will
Arroway be the only one to be able to solve it or will there be more involved to help
including theory s and arguments? Science versus religion is one of the main topics
and many topics of this movie which I can agree on as I watched this thriller. Ellie
doesn t believe in god and doesn t have a set religion and Palmer does so they clash
personalities a lot throughout Contact. I took interest in one character while watching
Contact.
42. Catch 22 Conflict Analysis
More than 80 million people died during the long lasting conflict of World War II,
including soldiers and civilians. Disease, famine, and combat generated the mortality
of over three percent of the world s population in 1945. These issues are ordinary
struggles that a country participating in war is forced to suffer through. What effects
does international conflict have on its participants? That controversial question is
centered at the heart of Joseph Heller s novel, Catch 22. The results or consequences
of warare focused on through the mind of John Yossarian and other main characters.
John struggles to find the meaning of conflict while attempting to complete his
required amount of combat missions so he can return home. As the novel progresses,

One character in Catch 22 that uses war to make a profit is Milo Minderbinder.
Joseph Heller uses Milo as a satire of the modern businessman and this becomes
evident while he works with Yossarian running the syndicate. The syndicate
involves buying and selling supplies to other countries for Milo s profit (372).
Even though Milo is an American man, he finds ways to perform business with
people internationally. At a certain point, Yossarian and Orr go on rest leave to
Palermo with Milo, in order for Milo to purchase supplies for the syndicate. Upon
their arrival, Orr and Yossarian notice that Milo is the mayor of Palermo, and he
has used the war to benefit himself by creating a business that functions only under
the circumstances of war (234). At certain times, Milo can go too far to make a
profit. This is shown when Milo bombs his own base in Pianosa, and he confesses
to killing his own men for profit from the German Army (257). In a similar way,
when Milo agrees to help Yossarian find someone in Rome, he hears of a large
profit that can be made by smuggling illegal tobacco. And after being made aware
of the profit that can be made, Milo was gone like a shot and Yossarian lost all
hope of finding the girl (411). Milo is a great example of a man who finds the
bright side of even the darkest situations, including world war. Taking all into
consideration, Milo Minderbinder provides evidence that consequences of conflict
are negative for all
43. Essay about Parents Hitting Their Children
Parents Hitting Their Children
For this coursework, I will be looking at whether parents should be allowed to hit
their children or children that are being looked after by them.
Like most questions there are usually two sides to the argument.
The 1st reason why parents should be allowed to hit their kids is to enforce a form of
discipline.
The other reason why hitting children is bad is because by hitting a child, they may
be emotionally scared for life.
Many people have different views on this topic; some are for it, some are against it.
The United Nations (UN) as a violation of basic human rights have condemned the
national U.K. law.
It says that some forms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You have to be cruel to be kind =================================
For example, confiscating their toys wouldn t be as effective because the parents
may eventually give the toys back or may give into the child s request.
Other parents argue that hitting your child is wrong.
This is because hitting the child may upset them even after the discipline has been
enforced.
Hitting your child may physically and emotionally scar them. This could also make
the child form hatred towards the parent.
Some parents hit their child / children even though they may not want to. They can
lose their temper in the heat of the moment and can t physically stop themselves from
doing it.
Many of these parents should find counselling to help them overcome this problem.
When I was a child, my parents used to discipline me by hitting me but only if I
behaved very badly.
Looking back on it now, it wasn t so bad because they only ever hit me when I was
naughty and I was never emotionally or physically hurt from it. I was only
physically hurt for a moment but I guess that s one of the reasons why I behaved.
44. Over time I eventually learnt how to behave the way my parents wanted me to so
the hitting stopped. This made me the person I am today. I consider myself lucky
compared to other children who have been treated badly or hurt from their parents

people of Atlantis. The titans struggled to survive on Earth, the intense gravity
difference between earth and mars is the main reason that titans could not

47. Conservatism In The 1970s
War what is it good for? Absolutely nothing! This message continually echoed among
the American public during the 1970s, emphasizing its voice of protest against the
Vietnam War. In contrast with the rise of counterculture in the 1960s, the 1970s saw
the rise of conservatism; the desire to revert back to America s traditional social and
religious values. During this time Americans endured a loss of confidence from an
unstable economy, an energy crisis, and ongoing action in Vietnam, and Americans
thought that conservatism would provide stability. In the 1970s, Americans saw the
rise of Motownin the music industry, which fit the mold of conservatism. Protest
music became popular as a response to the Vietnam War, attracting Vietnam veterans
as well as the younger... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1984, the British synth pop act, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, produced an
elongated version of War on their album Welcome to the Pleasuredome .[25]
Frankie Goes to Hollywood contemporized the song by using the background of the
Cold War. Later in 1985 Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band revitalized War for
their world tour. Their version of War condemned American intervention in El
Salvador and Nicaragua during the 1980s.[26] Springsteen transformed the song to
widescreen with his War music video which showed the separation of families and
footage of Vietnam. [27] Over the years, War conveyed the ongoing struggle peace
through the perspectives of various artists. Edwin Starr transformed an obvious point
of protest into a revelation through his enthusiasm and dedication towards the music.
War changed the conservative face of Motown through the power of its lyrics and
widespread support of its anti war message. War generated momentum and motivation
among the public. America became forever united under an anthem of
48. Bornean Orangutan Research Paper
Orangutans are amongst the most iconic species in wildlife conservation (Meijaard,
E., Wich, S., Ancrenaz, M., Marshall, A J., 2012) Their behaviours and facial
expressions give them an uncannily human like personality. Their genetic
comparisons, cognitive and behavioural similarities indicate a close evolutionary
relationship between humans and themselves. [REF] There are two species of the
Orangutan, the Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean Orangautan
(Pongo pygmaeus). The Sumatran orangutan belongs exclusively to the island of
Sumatra, Indonesia. This species is rarer than its Bornean equivalent. The Sumatran
orangutan lives mainly amongst the trees of tropical rainforests, and rely heavily on
these forests for survival.
49. Gender Roles In Spongebob Squarepants
Children s behaviours are actively shaped by social forces and are continuously
evolving. The media in popular culture are powerful tools in moulding and instilling
specific responses in accordance to social scripts. SpongeBob Squarepants is a
popular animated show aimed at children aged 2 13. Through its clever humour and
amiable characters, it is easy to see why it captivates children, and likewise adults,
across the world. SpongeBob Squarepants is not unique in reflecting stereotypical
genderroles and cultural meanings in society. The cartoon, created by Hillenburg,
conveys subliminal messages of binaries, gender roles and hierarchy. Through the
characters, this essay will observe how heteronormative gender roles are reinforced
through socialisation of popular media. However, closer examination also reveals a
refreshingly positive and progressive attitude towards gender roles.
On the one hand, characters are portrayed conforming to gender role expectations of
behaviours and appearances. In Rock a Bye Bivalve , SpongeBob and Patrick
adopt a baby clam. Reflecting social norms that a traditional nuclear family consists
of mother, father and a child, they allocate their respective roles. The dialogue
illustrates their understanding of what each gender role demands. I wanna be the
mom! I don t think you can be the mom, Patrick, because you never wear a shirt!
You re right! If I was a mom, this [hairy chest] would be... shocking. Just call me
daddy!
50. What Are The Three Main Types Of Conflicts
Conflict forms
According to Kurtzberg Mueller (2005), there are three main types of conflicts. The
first type of conflict they describe is process related conflict that is based on the
work procedures, how well work performance is and the obligations, roles, and
responsibilities of teams. The second form of conflict is relationship based conflict in
which relationships and interaction play a major part between team members and
individuals. Finally, the third type of conflict is task related conflict where
differences about the work itself causes a misunderstanding. Kurtzberg Mueller
(2005), states that there is a linear correlation between team performance and task
related conflicts and points out that sometimes task related conflicts ... Show more

Most people don t realize that for every action there is a reaction and there was some
type of trigger that made this person act out in a certain way. Runde and Flanagan
(2007) argues that understanding one s own behavior and trying to reflect on others
are key factors when trying to prevent the outbreak of conflicts . Know how to control
your own behavior and how to respond to others can eliminate escalation between
individuals. A conflict competent leader is aware about his/hers hot buttons and in
which situations they are triggered, therefore they are more prepared for situations
that are emotionally charged (Runde and Flanagan, 2007). Conflict Resolution
Even though conflict is prone to happen is organizations, there are always ways to
solve these problems and come up with some type of resolution. Rahim, Magner,
Shapiro, (2000) argues justice is one of the most important concerns for employee
conflict resolution in an organization . Justice in an organizations brings forth
positive attitudes and lets employees know that management is displaying fairness all
around and have good conflict management skills. If employees feel that they are
being treated fairly and managers stay unbiased, they will be more obligated to
compromise and be more cooperative in situations. Rahim et al. (2000) divides justice
into three
51. Descartes Meditations On First Philosophy
Throughout Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes argues for the
ideas and philosophical beliefs behind skepticism. In his writings, he describes the
fallibility and importance of the body of man and through extension the senses
with which we observe the world. This paper will first show that within Descartes
writings the body is an extension of the mind. Secondly, this paper will prove that
the senses are a false form of understanding which leads to the deception of the
mind. Finally, this paper will address the inconsistency that arises from these
definitions of Descartes, specifically the incompatibility of a completely
independent mind and a body dependent upon that mind. Within the second
meditation, Descartes arrives on the subject of what a body truly is. It is
important to point out that Descartes is not arguing for what we consider our body
to be, that is, our hands, feet, torso, and all other parts of our physical being, but
what a body is in the general sense, or what it means to have a body. For this,
Descartes takes the example of a piece of wax and attempts to determine what the
body of this wax is. He first defines it as the various properties that the piece of wax
seems to hold in its present state. It has particular tastes, smells, textures, a particular
shape, and a specific color. Descartes progresses further in the investigation of the
body of the wax by changing these characteristics. He melts the wax until it is
disfigured and its

53. Treatment Of Animals In Captivity
Have you ever felt the feeling that you are trapped, mistreated, or a slave to society.
In today s world, millions of animals are feeling this way right now, a feeling no
living creature can endure. Animals are living creatures whose sole purpose in life
are to survive and thrive. Whose right is it to stop and change that for them. In
captivity animals are treated badly, they have the potential to hurt humans, and they
weren t originally supposed to be in captivity in the first place. These beautiful
creatures of Mother Earth should be cared for, not used as slaves. In life, people in
the world may treat animals as if they are friends, however, animals in captivity are
treated much worse. In Janet M. Davis s article A Bittersweet Bow
54. Analysis of Third Person Narratives of Two Novels
Ask any author what the most important aspect of their work is (whether that be
fiction or not) and they will all probably say the same four things: plot, setting,
characters, and narration. This is also true for the three novels we have studied thus
far in class: Vathek, The Castle of Otranto, and The Mysteries of Udolpho. The dark
gloomth setting, the larger than life characters, and the supernaturally centered plot
lines all make these books Gothic novels, but how would one characterize the
narrators? If there is anything that these three novels we have studied thus far have in
common, it is that each of them have a third person narrator. Andrew Vachss, an
American crime fiction author, once said that The third person narrator,... Show more

3 ) Although, The Horse and His Boy is far from a Gothic novel, as it is actually a
children s novel, the similar introduction of the main characters strikes me as
something that must be common among authors who use the Arabian setting for their
works. This specific familial introduction of the particular character by the narrator
suggests the nobility of the character and emphasizes that this is a character that we
should know. While the opening descriptions of Vathek can be categorized as
somewhat subjective, especially to the stereotypes of Arabia, The Castle of Otranto
s opening lines are objective. Walpole introduces the characters of the story as
simply as possible. The narrator gives no bias to the characters, he just communicates
facts such as that Matilda was a beautiful virgin and Conrad was sickly:
Manfred, Prince of Otranto, had one son and one daughter; the latter, a most
beautiful virgin, aged eighteen, was called Matilda. Conrad, the son, was three years
younger, a homely youth, sickly, and of no promising disposition; yet he was the
darling of his father, who never showed any symptoms of affection to Matilda
(Walpole, 27).
Unlike Vathek which conveys a message of dangerous magic right from the start, the
narrator of The Castle of Otranto gives the reader a much

The History
In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men s Christian Association
(Y.M.C.A) in Massachusetts, decided to combine the sports of baseball, basketball,
handball, and tennis to make a game now called volleyball (at the time called
mintonette).
He created this game for his classes of businessmen so that they could play a sport
that demanded less physical contact than the sport basketball. He used the net from
tennis and raised it 6 6 high. At that time it was above the average man s head.
When a demonstrative game was being played someone pointed out that it seemed
like the players were volleying the ball back and forth over the net. They said that
volleyball should be the name for the sport because it is more descriptive. So,
Morgan then agreed that Volleyball is a better and more descriptive name for the sport.

The Rules
Morgan came up with about ten rules when he created volleyball. The first rule, the
game needs to consist of nine innings.
The second rule, an inning is when the person serving continues to serve until

On the other hand, the Vietnamese refugees faced different issues during their escape
from their homeland. A staggering statistic states, It is estimated that half of the boat
people were drowned at sea or killed during their journey to find freedom (Cao 6).
Moreover, it states that, while fleeing Vietnamby boat, there were cases of robbery
and of pirate raids.
Based on Uong experience, fleeing into America was not an easy journey. Those
who escaped death by drowning had to endure multiple robberies, rape, or assault at
the hands of the Thai pirates (an estimate two thirds of boats were raided) (Cao 6).
Due to complications, there were individuals who were not able to flee the country
by boat. Those who did not flee the country via the seas escaped Vietnam by
dangerous land routes through Cambodia to Thailand (Cao 7). As for Uong
experience, he escaped Vietnam very easily. It was April 30, 1975, and Saigon, the
capital of South Vietnam, was under siege. I was 10, the youngest of eight children
(Uong 1). Only being 10 years old, he was forced to run away from home in order
to search for a better life. Hoping that he and his siblings would make it to safety,
Uong parents told them to leave. Uong stated, My parents, hoping to get us away
from the chaos, told my brothers and sister to get on our bikes and ride away. When
things calmed down, they said, we should come back (Uong 2). After they had
ridden away, they were able to see a small South Vietnamese navy ship
