The digestive system breaks down food and absorbs nutrients. It begins with the mouth, where saliva starts breaking down food. Food then moves to the stomach through the esophagus, where it is further broken down into a liquid substance. It then passes into the small intestine, where nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. Remaining waste moves to the large intestine, where water is absorbed before waste is expelled from the body. The liver, pancreas, and other organs produce juices that aid in digestion.
