This document summarizes a presentation about putting key literacy ideas to work in primary classrooms. It outlines 6 elements of instruction that should be provided to all students daily: 1) choosing what to read, 2) reading accurately, 3) reading for understanding, 4) writing about personally meaningful topics, 5) discussing reading and writing with peers, and 6) listening to fluent adult read alouds. Examples of student writing are also presented. The presentation emphasizes building a learning community through causal language, eye contact, focused feedback, and a view of learning as a dynamic process rather than fixed abilities.
