With the growing popularity of X-Reality (VR/AR/MR) generation of global media-data is expected to accelerate at much higher rate. Most of these data need real-time processing such as real-time facial features/emotion recognition to environmental context recognition/mapping beyond the capabilities of an MR glass. The demand for high communication bandwidth and ultra-low latency (<15ms motion to photon latency) will drive the community to exploit the capabilities of the telco edge nodes and push telcos to build more powerful edge nodes. The real-time analytics of media data with strict real-time constraints will be the ‘killer application’ of 5G networks and edge computing. In addition, we believe, multimedia analytics and 5G/edge computing will be the key to push for mass adoption of XR devices. In this talk, we will explore some suitable media analytics methods and architecture to run media analytics with the 5G edge nodes.

Worldwide 5G deployment has begun and promises ultra-high data rates with ultra-low latency, enabling real-time and interactive applications unlike anything previously supported by a cellular network. However, the 5G air-interface is itself only a small piece of the picture. Every device within the network, from a user device to a cloud application server, must play its own role in contributing to the overall performance of any 5G-based solution.
This presentation explores how 5G is accelerating the push for edge-based processing and how placing the right computing resources at the right points in the network can dramatically improve the performance of a solution, while realizing new revenue opportunities for equipment and service providers throughout the ecosystem.
Cellular networks have facilitated positioning in addition to voice or data communications from the beginning, since 2G, and we’ve since grown to rely on positioning technology to make our lives safer, simpler, more productive, and even fun. Cellular positioning complements other technologies to operate indoors and outdoors, including dense urban environments where tall buildings interfere with satellite positioning. It works whether we’re standing still, walking, or in a moving vehicle. With 5G, cellular positioning breaks new ground to bring robust precise positioning indoors and outdoors, to meet even the most demanding Industry 4.0 needs.
As we look to the future, the Connected Intelligent Edge will bring a new dimension of positional insight to a broad range of devices, improving wireless use cases still under development. We’re already charting the course to 5G Advanced and beyond by working on the evolution of cellular positioning technology to include RF sensing for situational awareness.

The telecoms industry loves to claim that 5G will disrupt and transform industries. What it hasn’t realised is that the first industry that will get disrupted is telecom itself. New local or shared spectrum bands (such as CBRS in the US), programmable cloud-based cores, eSIM and various other enablers are making it much easier for enterprises, IT companies, cities and Internet/cloud players to build their own private 4G – and soon 5G – networks.
That’s not to say it’s as simple as installing Wi-Fi, but for various organisations from airports to oil companies to hospitals, it’s becoming a more realistic proposition. There are also various hybrids, where telcos can sell “slices” or local/enterprise MVNO deals, or allow companies to just run a separate private core network. Add in a new set of wholesale models (called Neutral Host), and the future wireless operator landscape looks very different from today.

These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
