John Broadus Watson (1878-1958) was an American psychologist who founded the behavioral psychology of behaviorism. Despite poor academic performance in high school, Watson was able to attend Furman University where he struggled socially but graduated with a master's degree at age 21. Watson went on to reject theories involving subjective elements and consciousness, believing psychology should focus only on observable behaviors. He is known for establishing behaviorism and conducting experiments on emotional conditioning in infants.
