Ensuring Cloud Native Success: Organization TransformationChloe Jackson
Are you being asked to put more cloud in your strategy? If you’re like most people, the answer is a definite yes. The word “cloud” can mean so many things, however, that making an actionable strategy is impossible. At Pivotal, we divide cloud into two distinct parts: migrating as many legacy applications into SaaS as possible and focusing on perfecting the software you build in-house that runs your business. Gartner is predicting that by 2020, 75% of applications used to support digital businesses will be built in-house. If you’re one of these companies, you’ll need to quickly evaluate how you develop and run your custom written software.
We believe that soon, every company will either be a software company or losing to a competitor who is. It’s time to focus on the craft of managing the software development life-cycle, and this brief, but dense webinar will help launch your efforts to become a software defined business.
Join us in the last installment in our series: Organization Transformation - to get the full benefit of a cloud native approach, you'll likely need to change how your organization functions and behaves: you'll have to change its culture. When software is thought of more as ongoing products instead of discrete projects, the way the IT department is managed and run changes accordingly. This last part covers the motivations for those changes and outlines how to start transforming everyday management, strategy, staffing, and operations to become a cloud native enterprise.

Event Bus as Backbone for Decoupled Microservice Choreography (JFall 2017)Lucas Jellema
Microservices are independent, encapsulated entities that produce meaningful results and business functionality in tentative collaboration. Events and pub/sub are great for allowing such decoupled interaction. Using Apache Kafka as robust, distributed, real-time, high volume event bus, this session demonstrates how microservices packaged with Docker and implemented in Java, Node, Python and SQL collaborate unknowingly. The microservices respond to social (media) events - courtesy of IFTTT - and publish results to multiple channels. The event bus operates across cloud services and on premises platforms such as Kubernetes: both the bus and the microservices can run anywhere. A microservices platform is discussed with generic capabilities.
Outline: presentation summary
- intro microservices objectives, focus on decoupled collaboration
- demo four mservices in different technologies (Node, Java, ...) ; no direct dependencies; show the code (running on its own), show the packing into a container and the step of running the containers on a container management platform, using both Kubernetes and a Container Cloud Service (later on this will further the point of collaborating between microservices that are widely separated)
- discuss generic capabilities of a microservices platform (facilities required in many microservices that should be available as microservice - such as cache, log, authenticate (and compare with Java EE application server)
- demo a microservice providing a generic cache functionality (based on MongoDB)
- outline the desired choreography (a four step workflow that requires participation from various microservices); briefly discuss routing slips and the Saga pattern
- discuss use of events and need of event bus
- intro Kafka
- demo pub and sub from each mservice to Kafka
- link IFTTT to Kafka (for demo: use ngrok to expose local Kafka to IFTTT cloud)
- demo end-to-end Social event=>IFTTT=>Kafka=>choreographed mservices=> final result
- demo: extend one of the microservices: change the code, package a new container image version and update the running version in the container platform; demonstrate that new workflows leverage the new version
- demo: move a microservice from on premises to cloud - showing that the decoupled nature of the mservices mean that this move does not have any impact
- demo: show a change in the logic of the routing slip; none of the mservices require any change for a changed workflow choreography to be executed
- discuss cloud deployment of event bus + mservices

How Cloud PaaS Improves Performance while Reducing CostsAcquia
As IT organizations increasingly face the challenges of managing the complexity of delivering superior application performance and reliability across a disparate range of technology and deployment environments, the Cloud has emerged as a cost-effective means to build virtual data centers. But Infrastructure platforms like Amazon Web Services don't preclude companies from needing experienced systems administrators to build and manage their applications.
In order to address this gap, companies such as Acquia, have begun providing PaaS, Platform as a Service offerings, which includes not only the physical hardware, but also provides an expertly managed, application appropriate stack. Which means organizations can focus more singularly on their applications.
Jeff Kaplan, who has been at the forefront of exploring the business implications of “on-demand” services, will lead a discussion with Bryan House, the VP Product Marketing at Acquia, around how Acquia's offering of a Drupal Platform as a Service is helping IT organizations meet this challenge.
Using the open-source WCMS, Drupal, Acquia's Cloud platform and specific customer case studies, participants will learn what PaaS really means to an organization in terms of both delivering improved performance while reducing costs.

PaaS Anywhere - Deploying an OpenShift PaaS into your Cloud Provider of ChoiceIsaac Christoffersen
Choice matters. And OpenShift Enterprise by Red Hat is the only Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) product that runs in the hosting environment of your choice.
While true PaaS products provide a level of infrastructure abstraction so developers can be more productive, choosing the right environment to host your PaaS product is critical. You must take many factors into consideration, like cost, availability, scalability, and manageability. Having a PaaS product that’s truly environment-agnostic can maximize your options and help you make the choice that best fits your needs.
This talk has a demo of deploying OpenShift Enterprise to multiple public cloud providers and within local virtual machines. By using common provisioning tools and the various cloud vendor APIs, you’ll see the realization of open, hybrid PaaS. You’ll also learn about considerations when running OpenShift Enterprise in these different environments, and monitoring strategies for proactively maintaining the health of an OpenShift Enterprise environment.

Jelastic can be installed on top of Google Cloud Compute Engine as Virtual Private Cluster. At the same time enterprises can use same version of Jelastic Private Cloud on-premise. It provides 100% compatibility between private and public clouds, and full automation for easy migration between the clouds.
100% compatibility between Public and Private Clouds is the key requirement for fast adoption by enterprises.
Currently, most businesses are already using or plan to use different forms of cloud services. This creates a demand in ability to move complex workloads between the clouds with high uptime and zero data loss. One of the ways to gain this and keep the applications running is to use containers live migration between different physical servers or even data centers. Usually you have to repack and rebuild containers with your workloads every time you are moving an application from one cloud or data center to another. The challenge, that needs overcoming here, is to make this migration maximally smooth and highly automated. Find out how some of the main DevOps issues can be solved leveraging the live migration option and what bottlenecks can be faced.
With the Jelastic intuitive UI, you can easily deploy and manage your applications in a fast and trouble free way without ever having to perform any complex configurations. This guide will provide you with the basic information on Jelastic dashboard functionality and help you get acquainted with the possibilities it provides.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
