Thomas Paine And Common Sense
Thomas Paine and Common Sense In colonial America, Britain s colonies were subjected to many
Parliamentary acts that were considered to be, by many of the colonists, oppressive. The Declaratory
Act, the Coercive Acts, and numerous other tax based acts were just a few of the many examples of
the controlling behavior displayed by the British Parliament toward their North American colonies.
This seemingly oppressive behavior by the British Parliament had not gone unnoticed by those outside
of the Colonies, as British citizens had even begun to sympathize for the colonists (Johnson). In all
this time, the colonists still viewed themselves as British citizens. Eventually, however, Parliament s
presence and actions in the Colonies had become so great, that the thought of independence began to
form in the minds of many colonists. For quite some time, the Colonies were unable to make a
decision on whether or not to secede from Great Britain. It took the words from a man named Thomas
Paine, through his writing of Common Sense, to finally urge the Colonies onwards to unify and fight
for independence. Initially, the Colonies were fighting simply to have their rights as British citizens
recognized. This line of thinking changed over time, which was influenced by Thomas Paine s
Common Sense. Through this pamphlet, Paine was one of the first to put forth the notion of American
Independence, putting into written word what others had only thought of. However, when Common

My Personal Statement Of Ecology
For me to fall in love with science, and ecology in particular, has been a lifelong process. I was lucky
to have experienced an early discovery of the joys and nuances of nature and this was supported
throughout my youth and adulthood by teachers, peers, and most importantly, my family. My first
memory, of seeing light filtering through swaying trees above me, is indicative of the beauty and
tranquility that nature has provided me throughout my life. Although I have always had an innate
respect and enjoyment of the environment, this feeling was amplified every time i would visit my
family in Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico. These frequent trips to a pristine environment were what
ultimately changed my perspective on the world, my personal values, and led me to pursue an
education in ecology.

Although they had never studied it in universities, they knew more about their land and its
conservation than I ever could. They were aware of the common names of every species, of how to
grow what they needed, how to pollinate and take care of the soil, and how to raise and maintain
animals. My family knew how to live off of the land while tending to it for future generations. My
mom and her siblings were able to turn the soil to maintain maximum growth and could grow
livestock to use the resources provided by them. They know which plants are medicinal and
beneficial, as well as which ones can be deadly. These concepts, of being able to conserve the
environment, are what I focus on learning now. When I apply the concepts I learn in my biology
classes, such as on a recent restoration project in Baja California, I am reminded of what my family
taught me to do from a young age. Due to my experience of the beauty and grandeur of Valparaiso,
Mexico, it feels only natural for me to keep pushing towards the conservation and restoration of places

Everything Bad Is Good For You Analysis
Steven Johnson s book, Everything Bad Is Good For You, paints a modern picture of the way in which
technology has affected us in a mostly positive way. Johnson has also written about neuroscience,
computer technology, and media studies in his previous books. In his book Everything Bad Is Good
For You, Johnson uses comparisons between two different eras of television to point out the varying
complexities between the simple plotlines of older TV, and the highly complex plotlines of modern
TV. For example, people can watch television dramas such as 24, which in comparison to older shows
are many times more complicated and more difficult to understand. If the much less complicated show
Hill Street Blues confused the developing TV audiences of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Modern Television has become much more complicated according to Johnson. For example, Johnson
writes, Draw an 5 outline of the narrative threads in almost every Dragnet episode and it will be a
single line (66). However A Hill Street Blues episode complicates the picture in a number of profound
ways. The narrative weaves together a collection of distinct strands sometimes as many as ten (67).
Johnson uses these examples of older and newer television shows to support his claim of the increased
complexity of modern TV as opposed to the old simplistic formula used for shows prior to the
groundbreaking show Hill Street Blues. Johnson s argument is that if our brains have become
accustomed to following increasingly complex plotlines as TV has matured, then television has
actually had a positive impact on our brains. Walter Kirn writes in regards to Johnsons persuasiveness
Johnson s argument isn t strictly scientific, relying on hypothesis and tests, but more observational and
impressionistic. Its persuasive anyhow. When he compares contemporary hit crime dramas like The
Sopranos and 24 , with their elaborate, multilevel plotlines teeming casts of characters and open ended
narrative structures with popular numbskull clunkers of yore like Starsky and Hutch. The point is, this,
Johnson s approach to his argument may not be strictly scientific, however, it sure as hell is

A Plan-Based Theory Of Strategic Communication Analysis
As a building principal, I am in a perpetual state of building relationships. Each day I cope with the
uncertain outcome of daily conversations with a variety of stakeholders. Reading the chapter on
uncertainty reduction theory (URT), I recognized many approaches I use when meeting a new person.
Charles Berger s URT addresses cognitive rather than behavioral uncertainty reduction. Behavioral
reduction regards questions related to how to act when first meeting someone. Cognitive reduction has
to do with ways to gather information when you first meet someone. Berger developed 8 axioms, key
variables to grow relationships. Additionally, he generated twenty eight theorems based on the
outcomes of combined axioms. Both the axioms and the 28 extensions provide the background for
Berger s work A Plan Based Theory of Strategic Communication . This plan seeks to help guide one
through the process of using communication to reduce uncertainty. ... Show more content on

They are goal driven. Because of this, Berger suggests strategies, message plans, that can be used to
help us deal with the uncertainty. Plan complexity, seeking information (passive, active, or through
interactions), and hedging are all strategies. These are all strategies I have used, most often, due to the
spontaneity of many of my conversations, I use the interactive strategy. Often, I will use humor in an
attempt to hedge. I have found a smile to be extremely helpful in reducing uncertainty when engaging
in that first conversation. None of Berger s theory surprised me. Reading the Afifi s critique of Berger,
the idea that we are more motivated reduce anxiety rather than uncertainty during first time
encounters. I may be missing something, but I think anxiety and uncertain y go hand in

Billy Sunday Essay
Billy Sunday
For almost a quarter century Billy Sunday was a household name in the United States. Between 1902
when he first made the pages of the New York Times and 1935 when the paper covered his death and
memorial service in detail, people who knew anything about current events had heard of the former
major league baseball player who was preaching sin and salvation to large crowds all over America.
Not everyone who knew of the famous evangelist liked him. Plenty of outspoken critics spoke of his
flashy style and criticized his conservative doctrines. But he had hundreds of thousands, perhaps
millions, of loyal defenders, and they were just as loud in their praise as the critics were in their
criticism. Whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also studied Scripture and became unusually generous toward the needy.
Furthermore, Sunday was constrained by an obsession to tell others how he had finally found inner
peace and a more purposeful life. At first through lectures and then in sermons, he related how Jesus
Christ gave him a new life of meaning, peace, and hope. This same gospel, he said, would similarly
transform others. The evidence is overwhelmingly that it did.
If Billy Sunday was sincere devoted, and motivated, he was also a product of his times and an
example of the culture and morals of middle America. On the other hand, Sunday took many stands
against popular beliefs, and he persuaded multitudes to join him in a war against many of the
modernistic ideas of the time that he saw as evil. As he once summarized his opinion so well, What
this world needs is a tidal wave of reform (Sunday Satan 24).
It is true that Sunday was a showman who craved an audience and loved applause. But he also touched
the lives of countless men and women of all social classes, helping them escape various forms of
personal bondage and find freedom in the gospel. And if he did not convert all of urban America to his
brand of Christianity, he at least played a major role in helping to keep conservative biblical
Christianity alive in this century (Dorsett 3). To understand fully why he thought, lived, preached, and
teached the way he did, we should look at his

Personal Narrative Writing
Narrative writing retells an experience that has been life changing in some way. That means that the
subject can be a moment in which you learned something about yourself, about life, or had something
frightening happen to you that has changed your point of view. In the sample essays provided, I read
about experiences with racism, police brutality, and domestic violence.
In Rebecca Goldsmith s essay, Where Does It End? she describes a personal experience in which she
notices her grandmother s racial bias. I related to her writing because I have noticed members of my
family making racist remarks. When I visit my grandfather for holidays, he will ask me about how I
am doing and if I am in a relationship. When I reply, Yes, Grandpa. I have

Marketing Healthcare Services
Marketing is concept that helps determine the success of an organizational mission. Essentials of
Health Care Marketing (2006) define marketing as, the execution of the conception, pricing,
promotion, and distribution of the goods, ideas and services. The author, Berkowitz (2006) goes on to
say, in order to respond to customers, an organization must develop a product, determine the price
customers are willing to pay, identify what place is most convenient for the customers to purchase the
product or access the service, and finally, promote the product to customers to let them know it is
available. Often referred to as the four Ps of marketing strategy; the four main principles of marketing

commercial may be in order. Promoting a new facility, perhaps public relations, open houses and sales
calls to referral agents make sense. If an event is being promoted, we should focus on carefully placed
print ads, public service announcements, flyers and newsletter articles. Different products lend
themselves to different promotional approaches, and some approaches are incompatible with certain

Berkowitz (2006) explains, Promotion represents any way if informing the marketplace that the
organization has developed a response to meet its needs. Promotion itself involves a range of tactics
involving publicity, advertising and personal selling. When, where, and how healthcare products and

principles: product, price, place and promotion of marketing strategy can be affected by various social

vital in determining the success of a marketing initiative. Social factors include: education level,

Water as a Source of Future Conflict in Sa
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Fierce competition for fresh water may well become a source of
conflict and wars in the future. Kofi Annan, former U.N. Secretary General in 2001 Background of the
Study 1. Water is directly related with the survival of human kind and it is crucial unlike other
resources, because it does not have choices and alternatives. As a consequence of global warming and
pollution, importance of water has increased much. Some 2 billion people already lack water supplies.
Water use has risen six fold over the past 70 years. By 2050, it is estimated that 4.2 billion people live
in countries that cannot meet people s daily basis needs. South Asia is a region of water abundance
and scarcity. Issues concerning water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As global claim for water swell up but utilizable freshwater resources reduce, several research have
been carried out to imply that water shortage is and will be a chief basis of armed conflict; but little
methodical research has examined this theme from a national security perspective i.e. the
militarization of the river claim. 7. While taking SA into consideration, the most important and
abundant factor for the development is water. This factor is thus regarded as a very crucial in keeping
the relation between the countries. However understanding and peaceful the countries may seem, the
water factor has been affecting the inter state relationships now and will be doing the same in the
future in an ever increasing fashion. The ups and downs in the relationship are sure to result in the
armed conflict as the water resources being the only cause. Accounting to the issues of water; this

the improvement of bilateral and multilateral regional relations, the consistent politics of water
resources and security issues have historically inclined regional politics and ensuing armed conflicts,

Hitler s Role Of The Nazi Youth
Many wonder how Hitler came to be, but he was a great leader, for the most part. He took the youth,
and gave them power. The role of the Nazi Youth was very specific. Hitler wanted everyone to think
of him as the one and only. Hitler s plan of the Hitler Youth was very efficient in a way and got
everyone to hate the Jews. Hitler wanted them to be the early Aryan race as they were the future.
Hitler wanted the Nazi Regime to be the best, by a lot. If somebody tried stopping Hitler, he would
have them removed and dealt with. Hitler had all power in one man, being able to do anything and
have anything as he pleased. Hitler was very smart in his decisions but he wasn t a good guy. Hitler
and his men killed over 4+ million Jews in the Holocaust. What is meant in that statement is, Hitler
gave orders to exterminate the Jews for ruining the war for Germany and are to be blamed . A womens
role in Germany was very specific, all it was, was, cooking, cleaning, children, church, and kitchen.
What is meant is a womens role in Nazi Germany was very simple in Hitler s mind, only being able to
do those things and nothing else. Hitler also wanted to remove the weakest and only keep the strongest
. Hitler didn t want youth kids who were considered weak so he had them removed, entirely. Many
children had to meet certain requirements in order to be in the Hitler Youth.
Hitler had also ordered to double gym classes. Hitler wanted every kid to be athletic and strong so he
had gym classes doubled so no Nazi Youth would be overweight or weak. With the rise of Hitler, he
had all school books re written to praise him and Germany and the military and name the Jews as the
enemy. Which means Hitler had all school books re written to feature propaganda and brainwash the
youth into hating the Jews for their crimes and should be willing to die for Hitler. Many groups were
formed that opposed Hitler, some were peaceful and some were violent, either way Hitler hated them
and tried to abolish them.
Groups like Swing Kids, White Rose, and Edelweiss Pirates were formed that opposed Hitler. The
Hitler youth trained the youth for future skill sets. The Youth were treated with great honor and respect

social networking sites help people find others with similar interests; it helps sustain and uphold their

The Effects of Heroin Addiction
Heroin is illegal and highly addictive. (Dupont, 1997). It remains as the most common drug among
drug, among all the opiates (Lalander, 2003). The opiate is made from morphine. Morphine occurs
naturally in seed pops of various poppy plants. In most cases, it is sold as a brown or black sticky
powder. Currently, purer forms of heroin are becoming more common in the streets today (Research
Council of Norway, 2013).
Many heroin addicts usually inject or smoke it. On average, a heroin addict may inject three or four
times in a day. The intravenous injection has been associated with the greatest intensity by heroin
users. It is associated with an immense rapid onset of euphoria. When smoked or even puffed, peak
effects are experienced after ten to fifteen minutes. Smoking or even puffing, does not produce a rush
effect (Research Council of Norway, 2013)
The United States survey on drug abuse has identified that, 2.4 million People in the country, had used
heroin at a point in their lives (Research Council of Norway, 2013). 130, 000 of them, reported that
they had used the substance a month before the survey. The report estimates that, in the year 2012,
there were around eighty one new users of heroin in the United States. A large proportion of the users,

users are under the age of twenty one years. The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) collects

Leslie Marmon Silko s Literary Analysis
Leslie Marmon Silko has an enormous garden. It was started at her home in the Laguna Pueblo
reservation, and took root in the desert there. While, like all the other Laguna families there, her home
did have a vegetable garden and some flowers to add splashes of lively color, when Silko would come
to grow her own garden, it would be planted with words instead of seeds. Nourished by sun warmed
sand and supported by the spirits of her ancestors, Silko s words would grow, never to be cropped
short or ripped out, and live on to become a flourishing garden, her legacy, as one of the first widely
successful Native American women to become a novelist. Silko s novel, Garden in the Dunes, is
something like a physical representation of the culmination of all her works and the journey she took
through each book to get there (Kuefner). Essentially, Gardens in the Dunes is a unifying story of a
young Native American girl from an almost extinct tribe and her adventure to reconcile her culture
with the impinging white culture. Said Native American girl is named Indigo, and her story begins
when she and her sister, the last few people remaining of the Sand Lizard tribe, are ripped from their

My First 12 Step Meeting
For posterity s sake, I tried to recall my first 12 step meeting and have concluded that it was most
likely the year 1996, it was cold in the little town of Altoona. The clubhouse was strange, dark,
smelled of coffee, and full of smoke there, the people were all so different, but all of them seemed to
know some secret code, plus they seemed to talk as if reading bumper stickers. As I kept coming back,
I began to feel more comfortable, understand what was going on, and want what these people had.
People at these meetings were open, appeared comfortable in their own skins, and had such, dramatic,
fascinating stories that were dark, yet somehow uplifting. Since that time, I have been to a plethora of
various types of meetings at various locations, but there is a theme throughout of trust, and a bond of
acceptance that makes one feel welcome wherever one goes to a meeting. Therefore, I had a plan to go
to Allentown with my fiancée to an NA meeting he used to go to on Saturday night, however, as things
sometimes happens, this did not go as planned. Not to worry, I have learned long ago that alternative
meetings can work just as well, or better. In fact, for all the meetings I have attended, I have never
regretted going, or not gotten something out of it. Ending up going to one of my favorite meeting
places, all worked out for the best, as I felt it would. The Sunday Morning Speakers Group D 33 at the

Being The Embodiment Of The Average Introvert
Being the embodiment of the average introvert hardly lessened the pressure of becoming successful.
Growing up in a household, where I would be the first generation in my family to attend college
brought challenges of their own. It was not until freshman year of college that I realized how
problematic my shyness and introversion would be. At Monmouth University, I was fortunate enough
to be accepted in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program along with 39 other students.
After the program had ended, I realized my reclusive personality came with a high price. During the
concluding ceremony, the student participants were recognized for their hard work and
accomplishments. When my name was called, I heard someone whisper, Who? I don t know, another
student murmured back. It did not occur to me that these students whom I shared the summer with had
no idea who I was. That night, I kept reliving what those students said in my head. My refusal to
publicly participate had limited my visibility to peers, and had exposed my restricted social abilities.
Since English is my second language, I have always felt inferior to those who speak English as their
primary language. The constant battle of not being good enough nearly extinguished any hope I had of
bettering myself. My parents migrated to the United States in 1995, from their home country of
Ecuador, and being born the child of unilingual parents interfered with my academics and self
confidence at a young age. Therefore,

Comparing Democracy In Norway And The United States
Of that less than 5% remaining full democracies, Norway has been ranked the best democracy in the
world. On the other hand, the relegation of the United States from a full democracy to a flawed
democracy can be traced back to American voters losing trust in political institutions and the
increasing role of lobbying. With their automatic voter registration, collaborating political parties, and
healthy relationship between lawmakers and citizens, Norway s democratic success is no surprise in
comparison to the United States of America.
The political structure of both nations also contributes to their major differences. Norway is a
constitutional monarchy with the king as the head of state and a parliamentary democracy system
composed of three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial. The constitution grants executive
powers to the king, but the cabinet, appointed by the prime minister, exercises these rights. The
monarch appoints a prime minister to acts as the political leader and head of government. The prime
minister is given limited legislative powers but controls the party of parliament as well as the
legislative and executive branch. The judicial branch, the highest court in Norway, is led by judges
appointed by the monarch. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

It is one that everyone is familiar with due to its high profile coverage. Although this incident occurred
in St. Louis, Missouri, it is very relevant to police shootings all over the country. As a short recap,
police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed unarmed teen Michael Brown. Ultimately, Darren Wilson
was not charged with any crime. Wilson, like many officers before him, argued that he was afraid for
his life and therefore used his weapon in self defense. Unfortunately, this argument has been heard
many times after Michael Brown s death as well. When Laquan McDonald was shot and killed in
Chicago in 2014, Jason Van Dyke feared for his life ; dash camera footage, though, showed otherwise.
Police personnel and city officials even went so far in this cover up as to pay Laquan s mother
millions of dollars not to speak to the media about what happened. Although video of the shooting was
available in 2014, the video itself was not released to the public until late 2015, after Rahm was re
elected to mayoral office. As more details surfaced, it then became clear to the public that not only did
the officers and top law enforcement attempt to hide this incident, but the Cook County State s

sensitivity training, maybe these officers would have seen a person and been more compassionate,

droves looking for work. This was followed by reduced housing prices in Chamblee that attracted
mostly Hispanic and immigrant workers who worked in the Atlanta metro area. As this population
continued to increase, different, predominantly White communities, pressured county and state

1). Growing up, I perceived myself as a minority in a predominantly Hispanic and to a lesser extent
Asian area based solely on the restaurants in the area and how often I would see Spanish and an East
or Southeast Asian script on the sign for a store. The latter is seen in the fact 55.9% of the population
spoke Spanish or Spanish Creole and 87% of this group spoke English less than well, indicating it
may be at least a second language for them. Asian and Pacific Island language speakers makeup 5.2%
of the population, however, a greater degree of assimilation was seen in this group with only 64.4% of
this group indicating they spoke English less than well. Another factor in this is that over 60 percent of
the population (61.3%) is foreign born with the vast majority (90.8%) speaking Spanish or Spanish
Creole at home. A quarter mile from my house there was an entire plaza of Southeast Asian stores and
restaurants and a half mile away was another, larger plaza with mostly Mexican and other Central
American businesses and spaces. In spite of this economic activity, the two thirds of residents rented
rather than owned their homes and nearly 80% of the total population lived in these units.
Additionally, 82.1% of the Spanish speaking population over the age of 25 have earned less than a
highschool diploma. Such data are emblematic of the relationship between being a person of color in
this country and the barriers to

Examples Of Determinism In Arrival
Determinism and Free Will in Arrival
If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things? This is one of the
heaviest hitting questions in the movie Arrival and it serves as the philosophical launching point for
my discussion here. This question comes from the main character Louise directed at her future
husband. As the movie progresses, we as viewers learn that the main character Louise has been given
the ability to see into the future. Part of these visions include the death of her future daughter to a rare
disease at a young age. Yet, even though she can see these events of the future and even though she
knows of the pain and suffering they will bring, she still chooses to follow the same course of her life
because she recognizes some type of greater purpose. It is through the actions and decisions of Louise
that this movie explicitly explores the notion of whether knowledge of future events would affect or
negate our concept of free will as human beings. Like Ted Chiang s short story entitled The Story of
You Life that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rowlands discusses this in Chapter 9 of his book and he argues that this concept allows us to
understand what it means to be a human being and how we are to achieve authenticity in our lives.
Namely, this type of thinking causes us to live in the light of our death. To do so, we require a
different understanding of time, one that transcends our standard linear notions of a past, present, and
future. By having a being towards death understanding, we begin to see everything in relation to the
now. This understanding applies directly to our understanding of our mortality. As finite beings, this
mindset makes us confront our finite nature and creates a sense of meaning through the reality of
death. It is through this realization that we find our meaning and true

Essay on Buddhist view on Abortion
It is quite clear from a variety of sources that abortion has been severely disapproved of in the
Buddhist tradition. It is also equally clear that abortion has been tolerated in Buddhist Japan and
accommodated under exceptional circumstances by some modern Buddhists in the U.S. The situation
is similar to that of Roman Catholicism, where abortion, though disapproved of in the strongest terms
by Church authorities, is still practiced by a large number of devoted Catholics and defended by at
least a few.
As a Buddhist, I would most likely still be for abortion. Buddhism itself speaks with more than one
moral voice on this issue against abortion. The core belief in Buddhism is against abortion, but there
are commonly people of this religion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If genes were entirely what made up a person, than abortion would not be acceptable, but that is not
the case. In very early stages of a pregnancy, Buddhists don t think of the fetus as a person yet.
I am a Japanese Buddhist. Where I m from, Buddhism is a little bit different. A lot of Buddhists
consider abortion a moral crime, but in Buddhist metaphysics, the life force comes from an existence
which is fluid like water and returns to that existence. The fetus is understood to be in a stage of
becoming a discrete thing passing out of the ancient waters. Life that appears in our world or in a
woman s uterus is the formation of a being that was before in the liquid like state of another reality.
Children are liquid and only gradually solidify into humans, this process not being realized until after
birth. Accordingly, the newborn gradually make the transition from the world of the gods and Buddhas
into that of human beings. Most Japanese Buddhists (like myself) believe that you can be cursed by
your baby after the abortion procedure. Because of this, they perform a Mizuko Kuyo after an
abortion. Mizuko means water child, kuyo means memorial service conducted in most cases by
Buddhist priests.Mizuko Kuyos are ritual ceremonies of apology and remembrance for aborted
fetuses, or the stillborn and miscarried.
Buddhists are strong believers in Karma, the law of cause and effect. They are often morally

Grendel And Saddam Hussein
At the end of Saddam Hussein rein over Iraq he had killed thousands of innocent civilians of his own
country. Hussein was the leader of Iraq for 24 years he had killed over 5,000 innocent people. Hussein
believed that God put him on this earth to become the president of Iraq and to help educate the
children of his country. Saddam Hussein and Grendel from the book of Beowulf are similar because
they both had the ability to kill a large number of people at one time, they also believed that their
killings were for a good reason, and after their killings they would go to a hideout or their homes, and
both of the monsters were very quick with their thoughts of killing. Grendel and Saddam Hussein are

So, whenever Grendel would kill people he would be able to just say that it was his job to commit that
crime and nothing is wrong with that but people didn t care because he was given this job by the devil.
In an interview with Saddam Hussein he states that The chemical attacks on the kurdish town was not
worth any serious criminal charges (Military). The reason he said this was because the town was
suspected of slandering his presidency and not following his laws. Unlike Grendel people actually
believed the attack was actually justified since in the country of Iraq slandering your president is
against the law and is punishable by death. Later on it was found out that there was no evidence of any
crime being committed and Hussein was later charged for the attack. A difference between the two
monsters would be that Saddam Hussein was able to make other people believe that the attack was
justified until no evidence was found. And when Grendel would try to make an excuse for his attacks
nobody would really care and would see right through the excuse and say that it was just cold blooded
murder. Another way that Grendel and Hussein are similar is that after all their attacks they would go
back to their homes or hideouts and wait till their next attack. In Beowulf it states The blood dripping
behind him, back to his lair (Beowulf 139 140). This

The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, otherwise known as the EEOC, is
responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or
employee because of the person s race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, gender identity, sexual
orientation, national origin, age if 40 or older, disability or genetic information. This also protects
individuals who have previously filed a complaint or charge related to discrimination or because of
personal involvement in an investigation or lawsuit concerning employment discrimination. This
coverage includes employers with 15 employees, but that number changes to 20 employees in age
discrimination cases as well as labor unions and employment agencies. The laws concerning EEOC
apply to all types of situations; hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages and benefits.
As EEOC as an organization, has the authority to investigate charges of discrimination against the
previously described employers who are covered by the law. The role the EEOC plays is to fairly and
accurately evaluate the accusations made by the employee and come to a conclusion. If it is confirmed
that discrimination has occurred, their job is to settle the charge in the appropriate manner. If there is
not sufficient evidence then it is their responsibility to file a lawsuit to protect the rights of the
employee filing the complaint and protect the interests of the public. Lawsuits are not always

A Tribute To The Mayan Culture
Being one of the first art shows, that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing, I am pleased to write,
that the works displayed, at the Beyond Art Gallery on the evening of September 30th the finest, and
certainly most impressive I have ever seen. It was made so by the awe inspiring works of one Andy A.
Villarreal, a San Antonio native, whose excellent artwork is heavily influenced by
Mesoamerican/Yucatan culture. On this particular night his work was showcased as the main
attraction of the exhibit A Tribute to the Mayan Culture . The centerpiece of this exhibit was an oil
paint on canvas work, which is clearly religious. Yet it is coupled with elements of culture in such a
way that each man or woman who views the work shall interpret both the blatant and the seemingly
insignificant details differently. This work has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cross rises higher than any of the other Mayan temples. A great white bird appears to have just
landed upon the cross. With such a great emphasis upon the cross I would be hard pressed to find
anyone who did not focus on it immediately. However I myself was startled by appearance of the great
white bird landing upon the cross. A metaphor, which I did not believe I would ever see used. I
immediately recalled a portion of Mayan oral history, which was along the lines of this. The Katun is
established at Chichen Itza. The settlement of the Itza shall take place there. The quetzal shall come,
the great bird shall come. Al Kantanel shall come. It is the word of god. The Itza shall come. It was
clear to me that this painting depicts a coming of the Mayan people to Christianity. The bird is also in
general symbolic of freedom. I believe that this work makes reference to when Jesus, speaking in
regard to those who were willing to come to Him declared It is then, that you shall know the truth, and
the truth shall set you

The United States Political System
Mankind has always undergone trends in a cyclical manor. However, as society presses forward, the
relative minima and maxima tend to break the threshold at an increasing rate meaning that what would
be considered normal is shortly lived. Today we live in a society where factions divide the nation in
their plight to achieve an organized force of ideas. The Political parties of the modern era have
become far more organized and are no longer looking to support ideas but are ever hungry to maintain
and gain political power rather than represent a people s voice. Our democratic republic relies on the
organized and informed voter to maintain a balance of control between the people and the
government. This is argued in Thomas Edison s 10th federalist paper in which he states, If a faction
consists of less than a majority, relief is supplied by the republican principle, which enables the
majority to defeat its sinister views by regular vote... it will be unable to execute and mask its violence
under the forms of the Constitution. When a majority is included in a faction, the form of popular
government, on the other hand, enables it to sacrifice to its ruling passion or interest both the public
good and the rights of other citizens. To secure the public good and private rights against the danger of
such a faction, and at the same time to preserve the spirit and the form of popular government, is then
the great object to which our inquiries are directed... Here we see the need for

Elements Of Violence In Gothic Literature
Rough Draft. In the gothic literature, some stories have similar gothic elements in them that can be
used in different ways depending on the author. The elements that are of concern today are the
elements of curses and violence. The works of Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, and Richard
Matheson will provide some examples of similar elements in their stories, The Devil and Tom Walker
by Irving, The Black Cat by Poe, and Prey by Matheson. The first element that will be discussed is the
element of violence. Now for those who have not read the stories that are being used, here are some
brief summaries with quotes and show the element of violence. In The Devil and Tom Walker by
Washington Irving, the main character Tom walker makes a deal ... Show more content on

one day, many months after Tom had made the deal, Tom started to regret the deal and tries to find a
way out of it by being extremely religious. After this development the devil appears and said Tom you
re come for .....the black man whisked him like a child into the saddle (Irving 332). Then in The Black
Cat, the narrator had found a new cat to replace Pluto. However this new cat looked almost exactly
like Pluto except for a white patch of hair on its chest. Later the narrator wife had started to grow fond
of the cat, eventually the narrator s wife had called my attention, more than once, to the character of
the mark of white hair, .... which constituted the sole visible difference between the strange beat and
the one I had destroyed...... It was now the representation of an object that I shudder to name....... of
the GALLOWS (Poe 3). Once more, in Prey, AFter a long battle with the doll, Amelia believes she has
killed the doll by throwing it in her oven. Once she opened the oven door her lunges are filled with the
smoke of the doll, she gets up goes over t to the phone and called her mother and asks her to come

A family law attorney basically deals with all the familial legal matters. Within a family and between
family members there might arise a thousand types of situations that require the intermediation of an

  • 2. Thomas Paine And Common Sense Thomas Paine and Common Sense In colonial America, Britain s colonies were subjected to many Parliamentary acts that were considered to be, by many of the colonists, oppressive. The Declaratory Act, the Coercive Acts, and numerous other tax based acts were just a few of the many examples of the controlling behavior displayed by the British Parliament toward their North American colonies. This seemingly oppressive behavior by the British Parliament had not gone unnoticed by those outside of the Colonies, as British citizens had even begun to sympathize for the colonists (Johnson). In all this time, the colonists still viewed themselves as British citizens. Eventually, however, Parliament s presence and actions in the Colonies had become so great, that the thought of independence began to form in the minds of many colonists. For quite some time, the Colonies were unable to make a decision on whether or not to secede from Great Britain. It took the words from a man named Thomas Paine, through his writing of Common Sense, to finally urge the Colonies onwards to unify and fight for independence. Initially, the Colonies were fighting simply to have their rights as British citizens recognized. This line of thinking changed over time, which was influenced by Thomas Paine s Common Sense. Through this pamphlet, Paine was one of the first to put forth the notion of American Independence, putting into written word what others had only thought of. However, when Common ... • 3. My Personal Statement Of Ecology For me to fall in love with science, and ecology in particular, has been a lifelong process. I was lucky to have experienced an early discovery of the joys and nuances of nature and this was supported throughout my youth and adulthood by teachers, peers, and most importantly, my family. My first memory, of seeing light filtering through swaying trees above me, is indicative of the beauty and tranquility that nature has provided me throughout my life. Although I have always had an innate respect and enjoyment of the environment, this feeling was amplified every time i would visit my family in Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico. These frequent trips to a pristine environment were what ultimately changed my perspective on the world, my personal values, and led me to pursue an education in ecology. As the name of this small town ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although they had never studied it in universities, they knew more about their land and its conservation than I ever could. They were aware of the common names of every species, of how to grow what they needed, how to pollinate and take care of the soil, and how to raise and maintain animals. My family knew how to live off of the land while tending to it for future generations. My mom and her siblings were able to turn the soil to maintain maximum growth and could grow livestock to use the resources provided by them. They know which plants are medicinal and beneficial, as well as which ones can be deadly. These concepts, of being able to conserve the environment, are what I focus on learning now. When I apply the concepts I learn in my biology classes, such as on a recent restoration project in Baja California, I am reminded of what my family taught me to do from a young age. Due to my experience of the beauty and grandeur of Valparaiso, Mexico, it feels only natural for me to keep pushing towards the conservation and restoration of places like ... • 4. Everything Bad Is Good For You Analysis Steven Johnson s book, Everything Bad Is Good For You, paints a modern picture of the way in which technology has affected us in a mostly positive way. Johnson has also written about neuroscience, computer technology, and media studies in his previous books. In his book Everything Bad Is Good For You, Johnson uses comparisons between two different eras of television to point out the varying complexities between the simple plotlines of older TV, and the highly complex plotlines of modern TV. For example, people can watch television dramas such as 24, which in comparison to older shows are many times more complicated and more difficult to understand. If the much less complicated show Hill Street Blues confused the developing TV audiences of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modern Television has become much more complicated according to Johnson. For example, Johnson writes, Draw an 5 outline of the narrative threads in almost every Dragnet episode and it will be a single line (66). However A Hill Street Blues episode complicates the picture in a number of profound ways. The narrative weaves together a collection of distinct strands sometimes as many as ten (67). Johnson uses these examples of older and newer television shows to support his claim of the increased complexity of modern TV as opposed to the old simplistic formula used for shows prior to the groundbreaking show Hill Street Blues. Johnson s argument is that if our brains have become accustomed to following increasingly complex plotlines as TV has matured, then television has actually had a positive impact on our brains. Walter Kirn writes in regards to Johnsons persuasiveness Johnson s argument isn t strictly scientific, relying on hypothesis and tests, but more observational and impressionistic. Its persuasive anyhow. When he compares contemporary hit crime dramas like The Sopranos and 24 , with their elaborate, multilevel plotlines teeming casts of characters and open ended narrative structures with popular numbskull clunkers of yore like Starsky and Hutch. The point is, this, Johnson s approach to his argument may not be strictly scientific, however, it sure as hell is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Plan-Based Theory Of Strategic Communication Analysis As a building principal, I am in a perpetual state of building relationships. Each day I cope with the uncertain outcome of daily conversations with a variety of stakeholders. Reading the chapter on uncertainty reduction theory (URT), I recognized many approaches I use when meeting a new person. Charles Berger s URT addresses cognitive rather than behavioral uncertainty reduction. Behavioral reduction regards questions related to how to act when first meeting someone. Cognitive reduction has to do with ways to gather information when you first meet someone. Berger developed 8 axioms, key variables to grow relationships. Additionally, he generated twenty eight theorems based on the outcomes of combined axioms. Both the axioms and the 28 extensions provide the background for Berger s work A Plan Based Theory of Strategic Communication . This plan seeks to help guide one through the process of using communication to reduce uncertainty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are goal driven. Because of this, Berger suggests strategies, message plans, that can be used to help us deal with the uncertainty. Plan complexity, seeking information (passive, active, or through interactions), and hedging are all strategies. These are all strategies I have used, most often, due to the spontaneity of many of my conversations, I use the interactive strategy. Often, I will use humor in an attempt to hedge. I have found a smile to be extremely helpful in reducing uncertainty when engaging in that first conversation. None of Berger s theory surprised me. Reading the Afifi s critique of Berger, the idea that we are more motivated reduce anxiety rather than uncertainty during first time encounters. I may be missing something, but I think anxiety and uncertain y go hand in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Billy Sunday Essay Billy Sunday For almost a quarter century Billy Sunday was a household name in the United States. Between 1902 when he first made the pages of the New York Times and 1935 when the paper covered his death and memorial service in detail, people who knew anything about current events had heard of the former major league baseball player who was preaching sin and salvation to large crowds all over America. Not everyone who knew of the famous evangelist liked him. Plenty of outspoken critics spoke of his flashy style and criticized his conservative doctrines. But he had hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of loyal defenders, and they were just as loud in their praise as the critics were in their criticism. Whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also studied Scripture and became unusually generous toward the needy. Furthermore, Sunday was constrained by an obsession to tell others how he had finally found inner peace and a more purposeful life. At first through lectures and then in sermons, he related how Jesus Christ gave him a new life of meaning, peace, and hope. This same gospel, he said, would similarly transform others. The evidence is overwhelmingly that it did. If Billy Sunday was sincere devoted, and motivated, he was also a product of his times and an example of the culture and morals of middle America. On the other hand, Sunday took many stands against popular beliefs, and he persuaded multitudes to join him in a war against many of the modernistic ideas of the time that he saw as evil. As he once summarized his opinion so well, What this world needs is a tidal wave of reform (Sunday Satan 24). It is true that Sunday was a showman who craved an audience and loved applause. But he also touched the lives of countless men and women of all social classes, helping them escape various forms of personal bondage and find freedom in the gospel. And if he did not convert all of urban America to his brand of Christianity, he at least played a major role in helping to keep conservative biblical Christianity alive in this century (Dorsett 3). To understand fully why he thought, lived, preached, and teached the way he did, we should look at his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That means that the subject can be a moment in which you learned something about yourself, about life, or had something frightening happen to you that has changed your point of view. In the sample essays provided, I read about experiences with racism, police brutality, and domestic violence. In Rebecca Goldsmith s essay, Where Does It End? she describes a personal experience in which she notices her grandmother s racial bias. Secretary General in 2001 Background of the Study 1. Water is directly related with the survival of human kind and it is crucial unlike other resources, because it does not have choices and alternatives. As a consequence of global warming and pollution, importance of water has increased much. Some 2 billion people already lack water supplies. Water use has risen six fold over the past 70 years. By 2050, it is estimated that 4.2 billion people live in countries that cannot meet people s daily basis needs. South Asia is a region of water abundance and scarcity. Issues concerning water ... As global claim for water swell up but utilizable freshwater resources reduce, several research have been carried out to imply that water shortage is and will be a chief basis of armed conflict; but little methodical research has examined this theme from a national security perspective i.e. the militarization of the river claim. 7. While taking SA into consideration, the most important and abundant factor for the development is water. This factor is thus regarded as a very crucial in keeping the relation between the countries. However understanding and peaceful the countries may seem, the water factor has been affecting the inter state relationships now and will be doing the same in the future in an ever increasing fashion. • 11. Hitler s Role Of The Nazi Youth Many wonder how Hitler came to be, but he was a great leader, for the most part. He took the youth, and gave them power. The role of the Nazi Youth was very specific. Hitler wanted everyone to think of him as the one and only. Hitler s plan of the Hitler Youth was very efficient in a way and got everyone to hate the Jews. Hitler wanted them to be the early Aryan race as they were the future. Hitler wanted the Nazi Regime to be the best, by a lot. If somebody tried stopping Hitler, he would have them removed and dealt with. Hitler had all power in one man, being able to do anything and have anything as he pleased. Hitler was very smart in his decisions but he wasn t a good guy. Hitler and his men killed over 4+ million Jews in the Holocaust. What is meant in that statement is, Hitler gave orders to exterminate the Jews for ruining the war for Germany and are to be blamed . A womens role in Germany was very specific, all it was, was, cooking, cleaning, children, church, and kitchen. What is meant is a womens role in Nazi Germany was very simple in Hitler s mind, only being able to do those things and nothing else. Hitler also wanted to remove the weakest and only keep the strongest . Hitler didn t want youth kids who were considered weak so he had them removed, entirely. The use of social media depicts the relationships between people and how the communication progresses. As stated by Heidemann, Klier and Probst (2012) social media cites are online communities that help individuals to bond and create relationships with each other. Therefore, social networking sites help people find others with similar interests; it helps sustain and uphold their relationships and helps people to find resources and knowledge. The most effective page on social media has been proven to be Facebook because it allows one account to share images, videos, and posts etc. to all of the friends on the page (Chen, 2010). • 13. The Effects of Heroin Addiction Heroin is illegal and highly addictive. (Dupont, 1997). It remains as the most common drug among drug, among all the opiates (Lalander, 2003). The opiate is made from morphine. Morphine occurs naturally in seed pops of various poppy plants. In most cases, it is sold as a brown or black sticky powder. Currently, purer forms of heroin are becoming more common in the streets today (Research Council of Norway, 2013). Many heroin addicts usually inject or smoke it. On average, a heroin addict may inject three or four times in a day. The intravenous injection has been associated with the greatest intensity by heroin users. It is associated with an immense rapid onset of euphoria. When smoked or even puffed, peak effects are experienced after ten to fifteen minutes. Smoking or even puffing, does not produce a rush effect (Research Council of Norway, 2013) The United States survey on drug abuse has identified that, 2.4 million People in the country, had used heroin at a point in their lives (Research Council of Norway, 2013). 130, 000 of them, reported that they had used the substance a month before the survey. • 14. Leslie Marmon Silko s Literary Analysis Leslie Marmon Silko has an enormous garden. It was started at her home in the Laguna Pueblo reservation, and took root in the desert there. While, like all the other Laguna families there, her home did have a vegetable garden and some flowers to add splashes of lively color, when Silko would come to grow her own garden, it would be planted with words instead of seeds. Nourished by sun warmed sand and supported by the spirits of her ancestors, Silko s words would grow, never to be cropped short or ripped out, and live on to become a flourishing garden, her legacy, as one of the first widely successful Native American women to become a novelist. Silko s novel, Garden in the Dunes, is something like a physical representation of the culmination of all her works and the journey she took through each book to get there (Kuefner). Essentially, Gardens in the Dunes is a unifying story of a young Native American girl from an almost extinct tribe and her adventure to reconcile her culture with the impinging white culture. Said Native American girl is named Indigo, and her story begins when she and her sister, the last few people remaining of the Sand Lizard tribe, are ripped from their desert garden home and separated. • 15. My First 12 Step Meeting For posterity s sake, I tried to recall my first 12 step meeting and have concluded that it was most likely the year 1996, it was cold in the little town of Altoona. The clubhouse was strange, dark, smelled of coffee, and full of smoke there, the people were all so different, but all of them seemed to know some secret code, plus they seemed to talk as if reading bumper stickers. As I kept coming back, I began to feel more comfortable, understand what was going on, and want what these people had. People at these meetings were open, appeared comfortable in their own skins, and had such, dramatic, fascinating stories that were dark, yet somehow uplifting. Since that time, I have been to a plethora of various types of meetings at various locations, but there is a theme throughout of trust, and a bond of acceptance that makes one feel welcome wherever one goes to a meeting. Therefore, I had a plan to go to Allentown with my fiancée to an NA meeting he used to go to on Saturday night, however, as things sometimes happens, this did not go as planned. Not to worry, I have learned long ago that alternative meetings can work just as well, or better. In fact, for all the meetings I have attended, I have never regretted going, or not gotten something out of it. Growing up in a household, where I would be the first generation in my family to attend college brought challenges of their own. It was not until freshman year of college that I realized how problematic my shyness and introversion would be. At Monmouth University, I was fortunate enough to be accepted in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program along with 39 other students. After the program had ended, I realized my reclusive personality came with a high price. During the concluding ceremony, the student participants were recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. When my name was called, I heard someone whisper, Who? I don t know, another student murmured back. It did not occur to me that these students whom I shared the summer with had no idea who I was. That night, I kept reliving what those students said in my head. My refusal to publicly participate had limited my visibility to peers, and had exposed my restricted social abilities. Since English is my second language, I have always felt inferior to those who speak English as their primary language. The constant battle of not being good enough nearly extinguished any hope I had of bettering myself. My parents migrated to the United States in 1995, from their home country of Ecuador, and being born the child of unilingual parents interfered with my academics and self confidence at a young age. • 17. Comparing Democracy In Norway And The United States Of that less than 5% remaining full democracies, Norway has been ranked the best democracy in the world. On the other hand, the relegation of the United States from a full democracy to a flawed democracy can be traced back to American voters losing trust in political institutions and the increasing role of lobbying. With their automatic voter registration, collaborating political parties, and healthy relationship between lawmakers and citizens, Norway s democratic success is no surprise in comparison to the United States of America. The political structure of both nations also contributes to their major differences. Norway is a constitutional monarchy with the king as the head of state and a parliamentary democracy system composed of three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial. The constitution grants executive powers to the king, but the cabinet, appointed by the prime minister, exercises these rights. The monarch appoints a prime minister to acts as the political leader and head of government. It is one that everyone is familiar with due to its high profile coverage. Although this incident occurred in St. Louis, Missouri, it is very relevant to police shootings all over the country. As a short recap, police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed unarmed teen Michael Brown. Ultimately, Darren Wilson was not charged with any crime. Wilson, like many officers before him, argued that he was afraid for his life and therefore used his weapon in self defense. Unfortunately, this argument has been heard many times after Michael Brown s death as well. When Laquan McDonald was shot and killed in Chicago in 2014, Jason Van Dyke feared for his life ; dash camera footage, though, showed otherwise. Police personnel and city officials even went so far in this cover up as to pay Laquan s mother millions of dollars not to speak to the media about what happened. Although video of the shooting was available in 2014, the video itself was not released to the public until late 2015, after Rahm was re elected to mayoral office. As more details surfaced, it then became clear to the public that not only did the officers and top law enforcement attempt to hide this incident, but the Cook County State s Attorney was also involved. • 23. Examples Of Determinism In Arrival Determinism and Free Will in Arrival If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things? This is one of the heaviest hitting questions in the movie Arrival and it serves as the philosophical launching point for my discussion here. This question comes from the main character Louise directed at her future husband. As the movie progresses, we as viewers learn that the main character Louise has been given the ability to see into the future. Part of these visions include the death of her future daughter to a rare disease at a young age. Yet, even though she can see these events of the future and even though she knows of the pain and suffering they will bring, she still chooses to follow the same course of her life because she recognizes some type of greater purpose. It is through the actions and decisions of Louise that this movie explicitly explores the notion of whether knowledge of future events would affect or negate our concept of free will as human beings. Rowlands discusses this in Chapter 9 of his book and he argues that this concept allows us to understand what it means to be a human being and how we are to achieve authenticity in our lives. Namely, this type of thinking causes us to live in the light of our death. To do so, we require a different understanding of time, one that transcends our standard linear notions of a past, present, and future. By having a being towards death understanding, we begin to see everything in relation to the now. This understanding applies directly to our understanding of our mortality. As finite beings, this mindset makes us confront our finite nature and creates a sense of meaning through the reality of death. It is through this realization that we find our meaning and true ... It is also equally clear that abortion has been tolerated in Buddhist Japan and accommodated under exceptional circumstances by some modern Buddhists in the U.S. The situation is similar to that of Roman Catholicism, where abortion, though disapproved of in the strongest terms by Church authorities, is still practiced by a large number of devoted Catholics and defended by at least a few. If genes were entirely what made up a person, than abortion would not be acceptable, but that is not the case. In very early stages of a pregnancy, Buddhists don t think of the fetus as a person yet. I am a Japanese Buddhist. Where I m from, Buddhism is a little bit different. A lot of Buddhists consider abortion a moral crime, but in Buddhist metaphysics, the life force comes from an existence which is fluid like water and returns to that existence. The fetus is understood to be in a stage of becoming a discrete thing passing out of the ancient waters. Life that appears in our world or in a woman s uterus is the formation of a being that was before in the liquid like state of another reality. Children are liquid and only gradually solidify into humans, this process not being realized until after birth. Accordingly, the newborn gradually make the transition from the world of the gods and Buddhas into that of human beings. Most Japanese Buddhists (like myself) believe that you can be cursed by your baby after the abortion procedure. Because of this, they perform a Mizuko Kuyo after an abortion. Mizuko means water child, kuyo means memorial service conducted in most cases by Buddhist priests.Mizuko Kuyos are ritual ceremonies of apology and remembrance for aborted fetuses, or the stillborn and miscarried.
