Introduction to Electronics Unit One: DC Circuits Section One Basic Components of a Circuit
Basic Components of a Circuit Students will be able to: State the directional flow of electricity. Differentiate between a complete and an incomplete circuit. State the four component categories of electric circuits. Explain the general purpose of each of the four component categories. Describe the terms schematic symbols and schematic diagrams. Draw the following schematic symbols: - Battery - LED - Switch - Cell - Load - Wire
Complete and Incomplete Circuits A complete circuit is one in which the electron flow can travel from the negative terminal to the positive terminal, allowing the circuit to function as intended. An incomplete circuit is when the electron flow is disrupted at some point along the circuit. The circuit is therefore broken and will not function.
Categories of Components All complete circuits must have the following components: Conductors Load Power Supply Circuits can also have controllers.
Schematic Symbols and Schematic Diagrams Schematic symbols are images that represent electronic components. Schematic symbols can be arranged to from schematic diagrams. Schematic diagrams are blueprints showing the construction of a circuit.
Conductors Conductors are components that carry the electron flow and voltage to and from the other components. Wire is a conductor. The schematic symbol for a wire is: _________
Loads Loads are the components in a circuit that use the supplied power to give an output. Examples of loads that we will be using are: LED, buzzers, speakers. If the type of load is not specified then the general schematic symbol is used. The schematic symbol for a load is: The schematic symbol for an LED is:
Power Supply The power supply is the component in the circuit that provides the energy to push the electrons through the circuit. The voltage is the ingredient that allows the circuit and loads to function. Examples of power supplies are: a cell and a battery. A battery is when more then one cell are combined together. The schematic symbol for a cell is: The schematic symbol for a battery is:
Controllers Controllers are components that provide management inside the circuit at specific times or sequences. Examples of controllers are: resistors, switches, and diodes. The schematic diagram for a switch is: this is a single pole single throw switch. Controllers will be covered more during later parts of this course.
